West Ham United are currently looking to recruit not one but two strikers or one of both for next season which raises questions as to whether Andy Carroll will be on his way. Reports suggest that having grown weary of signing injury prone players the Hammers hierarchy are looking to Premier League rivals Arsenal's 28-year-old Spanish forward Lucas Perez, Perez joined the Gunners last summer in a £17million switch from Spanish side Deportivo but is reported to be looking for a way out already, having failed to break into the first team at the Emirates on a regular basis. Slaven Bilic is reported to be an admirer of the Spaniard, who has hit the target eight times in his 22 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions. It was reported during the last transfer window that an unnamed Chinese club were keen to sign Perez, although Arsenal were said to have instantly rejected a £26million offer even though they would have made a £10million profit! West Ham are also reportedly considering a move for Juventus striker Mario Mandzukic, a player well known to Slaven Billic from his time as Croatia's national team manager. Mandzukic is no longer first choice at Juventus given the excellent form and partnership of Gonzalo Higuain and Paulo Dybala this season, leaving the 30 year old on the bench mainly. Besiktas are also interested but it is believed the player would prefer to 'chance his arm' in the Premier League.
There is a certain irony here, in the fact that England manager Gareth Southgate, is considering recalling injury prone Andy Carroll to his squad to face Germany and Lithuania, this drastic course of action being due to the injuries sustained by Harry Kane, Wayne Rooney and Daniel Sturridge that have left him without a recognised striker! Southgate may also include Michail Antonio, but call ups for out of form Aaron Cresswell and under fire Mark Noble seem very unlikely.
Who would have thought that one of the most injury prone strikers of this decade would be leading the line for England? Those who want to move him on in the summer will see his possible appearance wearing the three lions as an ideal marketing opportunity! - Ed
