Will we get a decent striker

So far we have been linked with more strikers than there are in a coal mine, its disappointing. I for one would be happy to see Chicherito come but looking at the reports about the others like Giroud, Iheanacho and the like I can't see them happening. Not to sure about the Burnly bloke so where does that leave us. Now we have been linked with Dembele from Celtic which won't happen as the bigger clubs will fight for him so like has been said on here before I would look at Assobalongo, he is quick and knows where the goal is and we could probably get him for 10 to 12 million as Burnly have had a bid refused. The thing is last season's buys where a fiasco that nearly had us relegated and unless the 2 Davids pull their fingers out we wil be in the same boat this year. I know we still have the sick room twins but we need players that can at least play a few more games than them. Still plenty of time before the owners start to panic buy but we have to start soon.

Define decent striker Alby? One man' Carlton is another man's Mido. I think that is the problem, what we need is what all clubs need, we just have to realise we are way down the pecking order for most of them. Gird would rather sit on the arsenal bench, than play for us. Even if we paid him more. What do we have to offer? A big stadium, mid table, no trophies. that's Troy Deeney country, Yet if the board came out and said that or we signed him there would be mutiny. Said it before but Wilson and King were mentioned last year and everyone poo-pooed the idea. I remember people clambering for Jordan Rhodes, willing to pay £10-15million. The fell from Brentford, we should've paid 312 million for him apparently. Now Assambolonga, all sounds a bit familiar.

top striker is what the board said so why would we expect less? personally I think this argument that we're useless and anyone outside top 4 should forget about signing good players is a bit weak imo. the real question is how do we progress? theres only one answer and that is buy good players. they are out there if you show intent and pay big

Think the word used was marque dicksy. Gold in his talks port interview mentioned 2 to. But don't hold your breath. Enner reported gone, zaza and calleri not replaced feghouli going for peanuts, and running out of time to settle new players in. Carroll and sakho still not ready and rumour saying Antonio won't start the season. Gona have to start spending some money soon. With the players from last seasons window either gone or on the list, say it all about our plans and transfer policy. Why hasn't someone been sacked? Gray is the latest favourite in the papers I doubt that's bilics choice.

We got lucky with Payet for 1 season. That's what a proven Prem looks like, Snodgrass

Yep dicksy I was thinking that the other day we really need 2 strikers and a realistic Payet replacement. As West Ham generally lurch from one crisis to another let's see how the team perform if the board fail to deliver real quality and the fans get right on their back all season. A tricky set of opening games 3 away on the bounce, the ground not ready, the team not ready in time and another set of poor signings? The fans will be right on their backs. The anticipation kinda excites me in a warped way.

So you believe the board? Mate the sooner everyone realises were in West Brom, Stoke territory the easier you'll sleep at night. The way we progress is an oligarch or a beheading Saudi oil magnet buys us. Like all the others that have progressed. Flukes aside it's why all the "big" clubs like Sheffield Wed, Newcastle,
Leeds, Aston Villa and Forest are languishing in shit leagues.

Altho I totally agree with you dicksy, I kinda agree with Betty (shock) for the sake of fans sanity, and that's right across several forums. I've come to the belief I expect Carroll to be relied upon just as usual, so my hope lays on Gary Lewin for our success this season. I expect a fairly non eventful transfer window of little quality, I even expected Valencia to be deployed but even that's been knocked on the head. I wouldnt put it past Sullivan to drop Hernandez at our feet and give him no support and play him as a loan striker. Making him the only bit of decent money we spend but at the same time making him totally useless with no support or creative midfielder. If it wasn't for the fact I can't believe he would come or indeed we would buy him I'd put money on it. Expect nothing. Let's stop believing the board they have proven they can't come up with the goods, for whatever the reason.

yes you're probably right. spin. i still however disagree with you to an extent. surely our 'move' to a 60,000 stadium puts us ahead of stoke and wba in the so called 'size of club'. its a bit like if stoke (geographically impossible of course) moved into the olympic stadium and we stayed at UP. i'd see them now as a club moving forwards and becoming a bigger one than us. there are only so many things that make clubs 'bigger' than others these days, stadium size is one because of the extra money it generates. as the board told us, the move will push the club forwards, we can only expect that to mean bigger and better signings. so with all that said, i believe its perfectly rational for some of us to expect better players than the likes of wilson, evans, fletcher and berahino. its my view that we should be pushing up with everton now. they have buckets of cash yes, but they don't have a 60,000 seater stadium yet. if we were still at UP, i'd say its perfectly acceptable to sign the journeymen, freebies etc as avoiding relegation or lower half is the aim. but the move pushed us beyond that. i don't think you take that into account, its like you still think we are the club of Burnley, Wba standards etc. and to be honest with you, if the board is unable to push us to the upper half now, after the move and extra revenue, then they should sell to someone who can. you can't make hollow promises and follow it up with signing no one good. someone needs to be held accountable. after all whats the point of moving if you don't invest it into the team? so everyone can have a new shiny seat to sit on?

Dicksy I'm just waiting for the fans to be at their throat this season. There is a lot of discontent building towards the board, a lot of people believe they were either lied to or conned. It could turn quite nasty, as people are now saying if this is what we got why move. Apparently they did the same at brum. Some brum fans are on record to have warned us fans at the time.

They did well at Birmingham. When they sold up it's always a gamble what the intentions of the new owners really are, and it's not really the sellers responsibility. Not too many Jack Warners out there I'm afraid.
This is all twatter led anyway. There are lots of bored single young men on there that seek instant gratification of all kinds, transfer news being a class A drug. In case no one noticed, Arsenal are the only club to have made a move yet. Others will follow, but until the dominoes fall we wait in line. Patience is a virtue. Sure they cocked up last year, hence the caution this.
They got lucky with Payet, Cresswell, Byram, Adrian, Obiang, Payet, Antonio, Lanzini.....yawn.

you been asleep mate? everton have bought 3 players already. bournemouth have signed defoe, WBA, Huddersfield, Swansea all off the top of my head have been at it. the mega transfers always take time sure, morata, lacazette etc but as we keep being reminded, we're no where near that level. for example, did we do our homework on giroud and iheanacho? everton did theirs on keane and pickford…done and dusted. yet we move from one striker to the next….did we do some homework on Hernandez? did we sound him out earlier? if so, why does it appears he's the 10th on the list and counting?

Could it be because they have to with Lukaku and Barkley going to gurantee them £100m? I think so. Plus it's far easier to buy keepers and defenders.
The others you mention, Huddersfield, have to buy to show willing. That's all I've noticed so far.
Oh Bournemouth dined Defoe. I'm glad we dodged that one. There's far too many appealing car parks in London for him.
In fairness, I haven't heard the board mention any names? If they have I confess I have been sleeping. Isn't it Twatter and the press suggesting names?

Personally I'd be happy with a striker (or indeed any player) that has been bought to fit bilics preferred plan A. That means if bilic wants to play 1 upfront then our striker should be familiar with playing that roll from day 1.

These are the things that you could separate us from WBA and Stoke etc.. plus London. However in Everton's case history plays a factor. You're also talking about a club with limited funds that laid a foundation and legacy under Moyes, Martinez and now Koeman, over 20 years. Moyes was the heir to Ferguson's throne lest we forget. We've lurched from one average manager to another over that time, and really the last one of any note was Redknapp. The Brown family decided to cash in on our talent rather than push on. So he left. We can look for as many reasons to believe or rationalise why we should be able to attract big players. We can put it down to bad homework but the reality is we're in between a rock and hard place. The players we could get don't excite the fans ambitions. The players the fans want aren't excited by the prospect of playing for West Ham. It's bargain basement, long shots and career revivals, and pinning hopes on those guys to elevate us maybe to Euro League. Then players like Payet might look a us. Also lastly we're at the beck and call of the big clubs when it comes to transfers. ManCity won't sell Ianeacho until they have replacement etc.... we're just not in a position of power. So yes it's the board's fault, particularly Brady and Sullivan. Yes it's our fault for hawking transfer news and expecting too much, and it's the players fault for putting in a crap season.

up
22 users have voted.

Surely the board have made a rod for their own back by raising expectations of the fans with promises they are not keeping. We can say we are mid table and that maybe true but from a personal point of view I expect them be honest with us from day one. Isn't it understandable people are pissed if they feel conned?

There's also the issue that we go from one extreme to the other. A board that never engaged with the fans for 100 years culminating in the bond scheme, building a legacy of distrust between the two factions, allied to a current board that believed any publicity is good publicity, totally misinterpreting modern social media thus backing themselves into an unwanted corner from which there is little wriggle room.
I still (perhaps delusionally) believe we're a bigger attraction for signings than 13 other PL clubs...

I got a feeling that's these guys have had their pants pulled down by the way football is run today. They seem to be stuck in a bygone way of doing things. They probably did honestly believe being in the Olympic stadium and having London on our badge would open lots of doors for better players and investment. They didnt factor in that most top players play at those grounds anyway. There is also far too much negative about us that must put players off. P.r is terrible at the club since tevez. They also haven't factored in that everyone now has the money to compete with us in the prem and if that isn't bad enough, in valuing terms they are stuck in 2012. They buy at low prices and sell at low prices too. They can't get their heads around average players now being 15 - 25million. And that's in ANY position.

not to be picky, but what about southampton? been chopping and changing managers for years, selling their entire top crop of players each season, yet are doing fine. granted they have an academy that is probably the best in the world right now but the point is they moved to a new stadium and the club progressed from the relegation fodder fighters of each season to a side that is always looking above at a europa place or cup win.

up

Think you answered your own question mate. The academy is second to none. The ownnership is long term sustainability. But they're still also fans when it comes to winning anything. A final appearance the first in 35 years?

Shaw, doesnt play for united, Clyne was palace academy, ward prowse doesnt play every game, walcott left them 11 years ago and is poor. Oxlade struggles to get a game in his actual position for arsenal. Best academy in the world is Barca of Ajax
