Hammers Hopes Held By Van Gaal? How Horrible!

It is rather typically West Ham United that the club's European competition qualification rests out of their hands, those who woke up today thinking that Southampton couldn't possibly have pipped Hammers to the final Europa Cup berth yesterday will begin having to accept the fact that Manchester United and Crystal palace will dictate whether European football comes to the inaugural season at the 60,000 seat Olympic Stadium. It beggars belief that after nine months of toil, a season can peter-out at the final hurdle, over 20 attempts on goal was still not enough to earn the necessary victory over Stoke City, who had Shay Given, reminiscent of Ludo against Fergie's United, play out of his skin in goal for them. Palace's woeful performance against Southampton did no favours to Slaven Billic, as ex-hammers manager, Alan Pardew, was clearly keeping his players in reserve for this coming Saturday's Emirates FA Cup final.
Manchester United were clear favourites to win the match, however they now need to play the re-arranged fixture against Bournemouth this tuesday evening, hardly ideal preparation for a Cup final, the result of which has massive implications for Manchester United and equally massive implications for West Ham United.
It is ironic indeed, that those of a claret and blue persuasion will become 'red devils' supporters in a faustian pact for a couple of hours or so! Who would have countenanced cheering on Van Gaal's men? Especially as they shouldn't really have been there in the first place, but that's another story isn't it? - Ed

Definitely been a season of many highs, sad to have petered out at the end. Still been a good season for us and had there not been Leicester we would of definitely been looking a lot more like the miracle team. Happy overall and hope we can go onto better things at the new stadium. We've been better than United and Southampton have pulled the stealthiest of climbs to nick our spot but then, thats football. With the new additions that will inevitably arrive next season hopefully we can add that tenacious edge at the end of the season to finish off the hardwork we put in.

A mini league table made up of all the matches played between the top 8 teams in the Premier League shows just how good our season has been:

Manchester United W6 D4 L4 22pts
Leicester City W5 D6 L3 21pts
Southampton W6 D3 L5 21pts
Tottenham Hotspur W5 D5 L4 20pts
Arsenal W4 D7 L3 19pts
Liverpool W3 D5 L6 14pts
Manchester City W1 D4 L9 7pts

is that you just don't want it to end. I'm MISERABLE that there's no match this weekend. I have never enjoyed a season so much, even with the frustration of refs, those last couple of losses as we petered out at the finish line. But that just leaves us with hunger for more and better. I don't really care too much about the transfer market -- yes we need a top striker, a second playmaker (or Lanzini matures), and always more depth, but who cares, as your mini table shows, we could go head to head with anybody this season, and so we could next season. Can't wait.

That's kinda implies we missed out because of the results against minor teams, I suppose we did! Does that mean we can't get up for games against minnows?

This didn't help us either, dropped 2 points at Villa, dropped 4 points ,home/away to Norwich and 3 points at Newcastle. Also, 2 points at home to WBA. With extra points from these games we would have comfortably qualified for the CL. All if and buts I know, but what if.

You guys are right -- the problem was how we played (or didn't) against the teams below us. Overall, that seems to me a sign that there's still a bit more professionalism needed. Go out and do the business, smart and tidy, keep a clean sheet and pile up the 2-0 victories against the lesser sides, keep a little something in reserve for the big games. Football comes to town next season, folks -- can't wait to see us build on the result of this season.

You know ashes, your probably right we need a bit more professionalism next season. Quite a few games/wins were built on passion which died against the lesser teams.

Of course, looking at the good performances made and the excellent results obtained, there is a bit of regret for not having obtained a place in Europe. We played better than teams that are ahead of us. It is not what we expected to hope that manure win the cup for us to go in Europe. However I am very proud of the whole team and Bilic for this great season was done a great job, which bodes well for the future. COYI

Who'd have thought Clattenburke would help us out. One of the best in Europe? You're having a laugh! Commentator on ESPN even stated he was one of the few refs that doesn't like being centre of attention!
