Payet Nailed Down For Two Extra Years

As every West Ham fan knows, unless they have been asleep or on a desert island, Dimitri Payet's deal with the club has been extended by two years and the player will receive a further £20,000 per week in wages. This might seem like a huge pay hike, but it still means that Slaven Billic's 'main man' will be earning less than Andy Carroll, who was signed for £85,000 per week following his £15 Million transfer from Liverpool. There is so much money sloshing around World football at the moment with both the Chinese and Arab Leagues adding their huge resources to the pot, throw in the MLS and then the huge amount of money Barclays Premier League clubs are about to receive when the new TV deal kicks in, and you have all the elements for potentially explosive bidding wars for players. David Gold and David Sullivan, not forgetting the 'Lady', are shrewd operators and have obviously seen the writing on the wall and acted quickly to keep hold of their prime asset, they have also recently signed up other valuable 'assets' on long term contracts to try and head off potentilally damaging departures. West Ham fans of old were used to the club selling their best players, so the new modus operandi is incredibly uplifting and refreshing, long may it continue! One storm on the horizon though, no matter what is written in a contract players and their agents now wield so much power that if either the player or agent really wants a move, they WILL get it! This is the nature of the beast that is modern day football, it won't change, so it is better to accept a long term view, one that hopefully sees West Ham United as one of the clubs players want to go to. - Ed

You'll see all the superstars looking for (and getting) improved deals. What Payet's deal does, though, is make him more expensive for other teams to buy. If he goes to Arsenal or Chelsea, we WILL be compensated in a big way. So I think the Daves made a shrewd deal. Not so sure how I'll feel about that after 3 more years, when he has a couple of seasons left on huge wages. But let's hope by then we are competing for the top six every season. Now we have to tie down Lanzini and keep hold of Oxford and Samuelson.

The Payet deal is a real statement of intent from the board ,and I think the summer signings will be just as exciting judging by Gold and Sullivan's chats to the media. Like you state Ashes,Lanzini is a must to tie down,he is quality, as are Oxford and Samuelsen ,who I think are ready for the first team. You know when the club are moving ahead as a footballing power when you look at the names in the squad and realise that most wouldn't look out of place in the first team.Never in the history of the club have Westham had such luxury of selection choice and I am looking forward to this summer to see who will be signing and strengthening the squad even more.I get the feeling it will be Westham and Spurs who will be the new boys on the block competing for the title soon, and like Gold said last season the likes of Man Cty,Man Utd,Arsenal and Chelsea won't be looking over their shoulder any more ,wondering how long before other teams close the gap,now we will be competing on an even playing field.
