Tim Sherwood (ex Tottenham): "Without being disrespectful to Obiang, that's one in a career for him. We've already see Son score like this before and we will see him score like this again, but this is not part of Obiang's game and he has chipped in with a wonder strike. If he ever scores one like that ever again then I want to see it."

I've not seen Son make a shot like that before, and I HAVE seen Obiang hit the bar, hard, from 35 yards.

What a strike by Obiang! Shame we couldnt nick it in the end, would of really pissed the Spurs fans off! Defended to a man, Rice was impressive and Masuaku showed some really nice flair but its painfully obvious how weak we are in the centre of midfield... we are desperately in need of a quality holding midfielder. We need a Kante...

Andy like you say it's painfully obvious our centre mid is poor. Unfortunately they are STILL our best combination, and there's the problem. We need 2 not one!

Adrian makes his share of mistakes, but I think what he adds in spirit is almost incalculable. AND he did somehow adjust to the deflected Erikson shot and still tip it over -- Major League save, that one.

Tbf that picture doesn't tell the story of what happened. He had the ball in his hands and kouyate headed it out of his hands. Poor play for Kouyate.

Two times I felt he let us down: first, when he was clearly fouled (badly), but then spent a good 15-20 seconds trying to get Mike Dean to blow his whistle, meantime Spurs almost scored. Second, he was directing traffic when Son was approaching (not expecting a shot), then didn't close down Son, and then turned his back on the shot. But he added so much grit through the midfield for most of the game that Spurs could have had two or three were it not for him. So it evens out for me; I give him a six. Reid and Ogbonna are still suspect for me. Thought Zabs and Arthur had great games.

I think you've seen an overall problem we have, Obiang, Kouyate and Reid are brainless, constantly need to be told to get back in to position.

so noble was not to blame, it was kouyate being told to get into position that caused him to turn his back, stand off and let Son shoot? I see. Ive heard some excuses in my time but...

I'm not necessarily sticking up for noble and on first viewing he did hold off and failed to close him down quicker. But, I do think it could be harsh blaming him for that goal. I think we can all agree mark likes a tackle so why hold off? I think he may have made a judgement based on the odds. Ok it didn't come off, but son was quite a distance away and still had a lot to do to score. I'm thinking noble held off to keep us more compact. If he runs out it could allow gaps for Spurs to play thro the team. We obviously had a plan to stay compact and not to let them go thro or around us. So I think he played the odds and they just didn't come off on that occasion. That's my take on it, so blame on him is harsh IMO.

who said anything about tackle? his job was to block the shot, not turn around and hide from it. sorry, but blame where its due this time. overall he did well, so did the rest of the team but if we're looking to blame kouyate for stuff all the time, then we need to look at others when they fail too.

Firstly I'm not looking at blaming anyone. Net went down last night so only just seen the goals. I stick to what I say about keeping compact. Ok maybe the tackle comment was a bit too literal. My point is he was being disciplined in what he was doing. He goes out to block the ball it creates space behind him. Could expose the centre halves. Which has happened in dozens of games. Just read in another thread that joe Cole said on sky he didn't come out as he also had Ericsson to contend with too. No idea if it's true, like I say only seen it twice. I think noble made the right call, and I suspect Moyes sees it that way too. We as a team need to play more disciplined in general and that's probably what Moyes is trying to do.

hmm, well i saw it all, and thats not my opinion at all. we're talking about a moving ball, contact to boot has been made….at this point who are you 'keeping compact' for? he was in front of the shot, not close enough to Son at the time so the option is to make the block….ball is on its way and you duck out of it….not rocket science imo and the opposite of keeping compact. as i said, he did pretty well most of the game, a few silly tackles perhaps..but overall good so this is just one highlighted error that led to a goal.

Sorry where did anyone say Noble wasn't to blame? just pointing out another general issue within the team.

Dicks is the man's picture

so you saying he was to blame?

up
10 users have voted.

Of course. I don't have an issue with him not closing him though, as you have to remember that Lanzini was on the floor and out of position and Kouyate was also out of position. Turning his back on it was awful though. I don't feel the ned to point out the obvious though. The difference is Noble threw himself in to everything all game including another game saving block in the 91st minute so it evens out. He didn't have a poor game. Kouyate on the other hand once again was terrible. So you may see it as a witch hunt but I call it as I see it and I see Kouyate missing a sitter at 1-0 constantly being out of position, jogging back, losing the ball constantly, slows down our counter attacks, fails to control the ball, has a dreadful first touch, and to be honest doesn't look like he wants to be playing for West Ham. Bilic fell in to the trap of making him the first name on the team sheet, Moyes needs to sell him. The other point being we don't have enough players with footballing brains in our team. Reid has always been massively overrated by our fans, but he's never been this bad, His decision making is terrible, thus also making him brainless.

why do players turn there backs, they need to get in the nets against Anderson, get used to taking it on the body, its not that they do not get paid enough. Great performance, I thought the week link was Kouyate, and Rice was excelent

Unfortunately this reaction is deep rooted in the grey matter defending yourself against danger isn't a conscious one. In times of danger in 99% of situations the body actually takes over and defends itself. Its a natural reaction. Bit like a golfer keeping his head down when you want to see where your ball has gone but in this situation you've got to defy what your brain is commanding you to do. Other wise you'll never be any good. Another example of a natural reaction is when your with your bit on the side and her husband comes home unexpectedly you jump out the window .
