2 up front or not?

Submitted by Red Neck Iron on Sat, 07/01/2017 - 17:55

Look I know think are still raw after that result but I'm hoping, there is enough still in the tank for a well measured debate. Do we play 1 or two upfront? By debate I'm expecting a bit more that just "one upfront" or two upfront. In other words I'm looking for a measured arguement. I think we should play 1 upfront, but to do that we need more urgency, intensity and need better passing of the ball and better movement from all our attacking players. Any one who says we need two, ask yourselves this if we aren't covering the ground with five helping out what makes you think we will with four? Remember it's still in Payet, Lanzini and antonios remit to defend as well! Plus if we play four across midfield Payet will be roaming around leaving us short on the left. Plus who do we have who can or is willing to cover the miles needed to play on that huge pitch? And who is quick enough to do it?

I'm no tactics master, but can't we do a 442 diamond formation with payet behind the front 2,this lone striker nonsense can get so boring, and reduces few chances at goal..

Omg are they saying the width is the same! That makes our performances even more shocking! There is so much room on that pitch when we play there must be some serious shirkers playing

Seriously though red, when you have pep, coming out with that our pitch size suited his players, and one of the factors behind their win, nice and roomy for em,and they could control the game through their passes having more time on the ball, that's a bloody worry,we better hurry up and get used to this pitch and quick,we've got to start getting in their face, the likes of shitty and arsewipes coming and taking the piss like that, can't be used as an excuse because we have a nice playing field,we are at home FFS!

Mooro you hit a nail sweetly on the head there mate. We need to get right in everyone's face. More so the likes of city, but when we get the small fry doing it it's even more critical we establish its our patch and we won't take that sh1t from them. Unfortunately 1 upfront, 2 upfront, 3 at the back, defensive midfielders, the formations won't make any differance till we do! For me all roads league to bilic! I'm sure I'm gona be shouted down and I do respect him but I'd put bilic in the same category as roeder, grant and Zola. I'd rather he succeeded but there are too many baffling decisions and incidents of incompetence.

Red you can't put him,in those category mate surly, what he done last year, was nothing short of a miracle for us as fans, maybe i'm still living on the back of that season, and waiting for him to turn it around.

How much of bilics season was of the tail of payet exceptional season? I'd say most of it. Of course he can make me eat my words (hopefully) if he turns it round and takes us to that level every year, but until he does for me he is a Zola, roeder and grant who got lucky with Payet. If he was the real deal the fact Payet has gone off the boil wouldn't make the differance it has. Look at our midfield, defence and forward they are all playing worse individually and collectively that's the sign of a manager who is making things worse not better. I questioned him last season when he got away we certain things. This season he hasn't, so altho I see him as Zola etc he still has a chance to change my mind. In reality I can't see him lasting the season! Or even the next 2 games and I'd put big money on him not having a new contract offered. I lost respect for him when he didn't walk on Friday. I felt convinced he had the honour to fall on his sword, but apparently not.

you cannot play 442 have you not heard that formation is dead people know how to cope with it the systems easy to defend against plus none of you have never played at that level so what do you know!...that's all you hear from pundits to coaches to managers...what a load of rubbish.....playing one upfront is the fashion.....and like most fashions some can pull it off but most should steer well clear.... we have the players for 442 but it would mean leaving certain players out and I do not think right now Bilic has the guts to do that

I'm sure it sounds a bit pompous, and like I said before I still believe in one upfront, but I believe it should give you more flexibility, fluidity (told you it sounds pompous) but only if it done correctly with players that buy into properly. It being regarded as a fashion sounds a bit to simplistic, although I can agree with eventually playing two upfront is something coaches may lose the ability to know how to deal with it. However I do feel Payet needs to play in a position behind the striker/strikers. If you play him there the second he gets the ball he will be a threat so the striker(s) are playing directly off him further up the field. If we play the diamond we probably have to sacrifice width unless it comes from our full backs which will come from deeper areas making it less of a threat. I'd go 4411 with Payet playing behind a mobile front man

but you do have to have the players to do it and clearly big andy is not mobile enough to keep lugging that big frame around the pitch....he needs help which is not being given..and surely any manager/coach worth there salt can see it and change things around.

I agree about big Andys mobility he's playing a genuine game but surely bilic should make it clear to him that the only time he be seen deeper than on their last man is at a corner! He is trying his best but come on Slav stop allowing him to come deep!

The problem is big Andy went out in the seventys central defenders can read them like a book im afraid it going like the continental s slow methodid build up or a blitzkrieg of a counter ,get men in the box and one or two that can hit those vollys from outside the box i hate to mention them but look at the Goonners going forward ,so many options also the Mancs ,shitty and manua Chelsea ,totalscum
Their light years ahead compaird to us knock it up to Andy and suprise suprise even when he does manage to win the ball theres no sod within a country mile of him
