Bilic Yet To Find The Right Balance

After watching the first 20mins of the game today I knew that Watford could spring a surprise result ,as they looked very lively up front.Going forward Westham always looked impressive,it's a distant memory those dour Allardyce days, when it was often backs to the wall with 11 players defending for long periods of the game, and nothing going forward. But one thing Allardyce was good at,he did know how to set up a team to defend. It seems Westham have gone full circle, great attacking play but can't defend to save their lives.Bilic doesn't seem to have learned that playing all out attacking football will often leave the team exposed at the back,as was quite apparent from today's game.I was watching Byram and Masuaku in that first period of the game ,and was concerned that they were playing to high up the pitch, which did prove costly in the end, because time and again Byram ,in particular, was left stranded up field struggling to get back into position after another Watford counterattack, down that side. It affected his game ,because he looked edgy ,a player that was not comfortable with this role.Another notable point in the game, was just how easily the Watford attack went through the defence ,like a knife through butter,it was the two centre backs Reid and Collins that really struggled today, they looked slow and I wouldn't be surprised to see Bilic start using Oxford to start alongside Ogbonna.Their distribution was also poor,if it wasn't a side pass, it was back to goalie. They were not entirely at fault ,there was a lack of movement in front of them to provide an outlet, the midfielders Noble and Kouyate went missing for long periods today, especially when it came to their defending roles.Once again, Bilic had them playing too far up the pitch, and Watford really exploited that.Bilic is struggling with the defensive side of the team for sure, with the dramas of switching Antonio back to his preferred role for the start of the game and then drafting him back to right back in the second half after taking off Byram, you can see the dilemma he had ,with Arbeloa still not fit.To me it smacks of bad foresight in the transfer window.I think Bilic has badly misjudged the strength of Westham's defensive abilities when playing that attacking game ,the team are just not defending as a unit, they looked all over the place today and he needs to sort it out quickly.I have always preferred defenders to concentrate on their main job of defending ,it allows them to concentrate on their job better and doesn't leave them open to errors from the counterattack when they venture forward .I think he needs to adjust the style and set up otherwise this team will be looking at a huge goals conceded tally come the end of the season.

Just a thought on the new recruits ,Masuaka looks the business,he probably had the best game today as a Westham player.Zaza, tried hard but nothing was coming off for him. He's not an Aguero ,but he has got enough about him to make an impact

which showed how frail we are defensively you can kind overlook it to a degree because of the quality of he opposition players but we got lucky against Bournemouth and again players missing etc papered over the cracks but todays defeat should be a huge wake up call for slav and his coaching team...and hopefully the players as well....we have a run of games against what should be teams that we take 3 points off but one of those lot were Watford!! better hurry up and get things sorted quickly...losing you can accept but being 2-0 up and fu****g it up and at home is unacceptable.

I don't think it was just attack attack attack today. If you saw the 2nd half we were very slow going forward which allowed Watford to get back and re-group. We needed to hit them hard and fast on the break but it barely happened in the 2nd half.

Those first 20 minutes revealed Bilic's style and approach to this game,it was attack,to really pile the pressure on Watford. It was great to watch, but the problem is the team are committing to many forward,it's footballing suicide, as Watford nearly capitalised on that with their counterattacking football. Why do the defenders, and holding midfielder have to push so far forward ,it's not as though they are crucial to the build up,it's leaving the team exposed and weak at the back

For the 1st 35 minutes it worked though. I do agree there were warning signs and they could've definitely had 1 if Ighalo had done better or the pass to him was better. It's when we started trying to deal with their tactics that our shape and all ability was lost. We played as 3 seperate units in the end instead of as a team. Zaza was isolated and defence were too deep. This left the midfield with a lot of ground to cover and open to a good counter attack. Defence were shit.

tried the same with spuds a number of years back but we all no how that ended for him...great going forward but defending was non existent.....defence was poor last season till bilic got to grips with it ...so to see the team slip back to poor defensive play is not good

So much for the post match team talk by Bilic with the players after the Watford game.Defensively, Westham are still a shambles, none of the team are playing with any passion and individual errors from seasoned professionals are costing the team dearly. What the heck was Masuaku doing giving away that soft penalty for WBA's first goal.? Ogbonna ,Collins yet again,Kouyate all to blame for goals conceded today.Last season Westham hardly had more that 50% possession and were playing counter attack football. This season Bilic is getting the team to play more possession attacking football,72% against WBA ,unheard of for Westham sides, but the opposition have exploited the weaknesses it is leaving defensively.Bilic needs to return to the counter attacking football, forget about more possession in games, just concentrate getting more players behind the ball, and the defensive side of the game.Otherwise , I can see it being more of the same. This bad run continues he will be gone by Christmas ,if not sooner, and the atmosphere at the OS will turn really poisonous.
