Gomez Deal Edges Closer As Valencia And Spurs Look Elsewhere

Sooner or later one or two of the protagonists competing in the battle to sign Maximiliano "Maxi" Gómez González from Celta Vigo were going to fall by the way side, and that is exactly what is happening. Essentially West Ham and Valencia were supposed to be in a 'bidding' war for the 22 year old Uruguayan striker who has a £43.5 Million release clause, however news then 'broke' that Hammers nemesis' Tottenham had joined the party!

Firstly, Daniel Levy has a personal 'agenda' when it comes to West Ham United, he is like a child who wanted a present but didn't get it, eventually he got an amazing present but didn't want anyone to have the present that he was denied, setting about ensuring that the recipients are made to pay in full! Therefore Tottenham's interest in Gomez will likely be similar to their supposed interest with most players linked with West Ham, ie: no real interest, just a pathetic attempt at pushing the player's price up.

This is one of the reasons why the 'silence of the Davids' is so important, back in the day a war of words would have broken out between the hierarchies of both clubs, now Mario Husillos is the 'dark assassin' who does the nitty gritty's for the Hammers and is way above conducting his business in the public domain. The main competition for Gomez's signature had been Valencia, the club who were interested in taking Javier Hernandez to Spain during the last transfer window.

Valencia though, have become disillusioned by Celta Vigo's stance over Gomez and have moved on, reports from Spain suggest they have switched their attention from Gomez to Espanyol star Borja Iglesias who is available for almost half of Gomez's price, they have also completed the signing of Cillessen from Barcelona for around £13 Million. In addition they are also close to sealing the signings of another two players from Barca, Denis Suarez and Rafinha Alcantara have been linked for a combined total of around £26 Million. Finally another player said to be close to a permanent move to Valencia is Villareal’s Russian international Denis Cheryshev for £5 Million after he spent last season on loan there.

Having missed out on Gomez Valencia have used up their budget, leaving West Ham as the main suitor, of course other clubs may still come in for the player but Celta's stance on his price means that they have priced him out of the market, a very dangerous game yo play by a club that need the money. This is where professional brinkmanship comes in to play, the 'Huse' is a beast when it comes to hunting down his man, and like was the case with Felipe Anderson, he will probably get his man, in fact there are rumours that he was the man responsible for putting Valencia in touch with Espanyol about Borja Iglesias!

The only real fly in the ointment is Uruaguay's involvement in the Copa America, Gomez would need time off before arriving at the London Stadium, leaving little time for the player to be integrated in to Manuel Pellegrini's set up. There will also be a few departures, so blending the new and old will be interesting to say the least, but the sort of task Pellegrini was made for. - Ed

so its a case of us being the 'last turkey in the shop' then? I wonder if that's a good idea. being a players 3rd choice, means he's just going for the money. yes thats the modern footballer but in this case how long before he 'wants out' when those other two clubs change their minds?

Or even use us as the stepping stone,to show the world his capabilities, then shit on us from a great height, leaving us high and dry, this time next year, dont want to put a downer on the deal, but its not the first time is it

I am pretty sure we will sign then this guy Gomez who like i said before i do not no anything about so you have to rely on the judgement of Husillos and El Pel,,,as for the spuds they swooped and beat us to the punch for that Janssen two seasons or was it three back and they did us a favour there Gomez has allegedly said he wants to be assured he's not playing second fiddle to Arnie so if he went to spuds he'd be fourth fiddle behind kane/son/moura so i doubt he would go there.

With him having other preferences but seeing Pelle control the situation with Arnie back in January and onwards I have faith in his ability to make Gómez into a team/club man if not a fan understanding that there is no real loyalty outside of a handful of players in football such as Mark Noble. Box on Pelle and The Huse get your man.

But did he deal with Arnau well? He's been crap since and draining wages?

I agree,it hasnt worked, arnies mind isnt right,i have no doubt pelle has laid it on the line, but the player hasnt sorted himself,it is plain to see,he has been inneffective,i think his bags are still in the departure lounge waiting for him.

It’s down to the player to overcome his own disappointments. I know he hasn’t had a real job with real responsibilities and maybe never will but he is an adult and therefore has to bare part of the burden of getting over the situation and his own ego even with that being as big as it is. Does Pelle have to be Arnie’s Daddy to the nth degree?

But that's the point. Would it not be better management then to have sold him?

Knee jerk reactions with January prices isn’t a plan. A lowball offer from the Chinese club isn’t going to get West Ham a bezzy mate discount when buying a replacement from elsewhere. Pelle had to bring Arnie down and by the end of the season Arnie looked like he’d managed to get his lower lip in a sling and off the floor. Let’s see how the new season goes.

I like pell, but I'm not going into the blinkered, everything he does must be magic. with the Arnautovic case, you admit yourself he hasn't been right mentally and imo its a manager's job to ensure the players are pulling for the team, not themselves. from jan to end of season he was a waste of space.

im not sure what the point of it all was based on what we saw in that period. letting him go for 30 mill would have cut him off the wage bill for starters and removed the bad attitude from the squad. you say it would have been knee jerk, but what materialised? he didn't play properly anyway so we gained nothing from it. we didn't lose a player, we gained one that was useless.

imo best solution would have been to get rid at that time. lets see what he produces this season then, but bear in mind he's now got a whopping improved contract for throwing his toys out the pram and to me that makes little managerial sense.

It's well documented that Pell (says so himself) had final decision on Arnautovic.

Selling him to the Chinese club and replacing him at the time, January would have cost so much more. Rewarding for “bad behaviour” isn’t ideal but contracts in football are one way, heavily in favour of the player because they can go toxic. I think the pay increase was to stop that happening. We still have an asset that is likely over his tantrum and ready to go. If not we have time to look at options.

Lol but why would we have needed to replace him in Jan? We made do without him anyway?

The bloke has personal issues to deal with, for all the money they earn, they are only human & being in the public eye must be a damn sight harder than the man on the street.just a thought

I certainly agree with that across all players. Even harder for Arnie with his agent/bro he would be filling all sorts of crap in his ear, very difficult to remain grounded if that’s all you ever hear.

You're actually defending the bloke now? Sorry, you made some decent points but making excuses for that behaviour?

If only life was as black and white and simple. That’s not an excuse, that’s discussion or comment airing opinion on how somebody can be lead to such behaviour. Is doing such a crime?

no need for the drama. im saying how it is, you are defending it and giving excuses, cant deny that and my opinion towards that is that I don't make excuses for it. that's it.
