Standard of refereeing

Refereeing decision are getting ridiculous. We all witnessed the abysmal performance of the ref in our match yesterday but other matches had the same ridiculous decisions. In particular the Palace game where Palace were given a penalty even though the keeper didn't foul the attacker who should have been booked for high feet anyway.

The standard of refereeing this season is at an all time low.Introduce the cameras, simples, stops all the aggravation imo...

Yeah. I feel sorry for refs, they have a near impossible job, with so many players thinking it's "professional" to cheat. FIFA must wake up and come out of the 20th century. Fat chance with that moron Blatter in charge though :-((

It could be good to implement the Video Ref system, the same as Rugby but then incorporate a Tennis style rule of a set number of challenges for example, a teams manager can have 3 Ref challenges. When a Manager challenges a decision the clock is stopped until an outcome has been decided, if a challenge is incorrect the ball is given in the form of a free kick to the opposing team in the position the alleged refereeing mistake was made.

I would have one challenge per half, and if you win your challenge you get one more. Also it would have to be with the captain, not the manager. Tied to this I would stop the charging and man-handling of referees. The captain would have a white card and he would approach the ref to play his white card, anyone running at the ref without the White card would get a yellow. A kind of carrot and stick approach, if you will.

Give each team two reviews in each half no matter what the incident is so there can be no arguments whether its just for penalties or off sides and let the TMO decide. If all reviews are used it would add around seven or eight minutes to the game. It works well in rugby. There is only one thing that would worry me is that the fans would accept the decision of the TMO, although I think it would become the norm after a while. Then it's over to FIFA who after severe pressure would set up a committee to review it. that would take about 3 years where they would recommend trials and implement it when the next eclipse is due in 2026. Why are they always playing catch up.

Lee Mason is one of the worst referees in the Premier League. How he missed that penalty for the foul on Nolan I don't know and how he missed Nenes foul on Larrsson in the move that led to our goal is a greater mystery.

That could be true jeff but I always consider that bad refereeing. To me a good referee should always stick to his decisions and not be influenced by the crowd. We've all shouted Penalty Ref and when we have seen the replays realised that the Ref had made the right decision and not given the penalty. To me the TMO is the only answer.

Seem to be one of the few who thinks video tech isnt the highest priority here. The general standard of refereeing is getting stupidly poor and why video tech will help then out, My opinion is it takes away from the bigger problem that officials fitness levels are clearly not up to scratch. Also clearly referees need better training and understanding of the rules. Are you telling me mistaken identity is acceptable for 3 officials to get wrong in a game without tech? The whole training system for officials clearly needs revamping and to start of they need to get rid of mike riley who was one of the worst refs of his time!

Years ago it was obvious what a penalty was and no-one appealed for a penalty unless someone made an obvious move to virtually 'save' a shot from going in, FACT! In addition, how many players used to dive? Really think about it as I can't remember it in the game. So the problem? The stupid rule changes and the money in the game, totally influenced by SKY TV. SKY has dictated the rules and created the influx of players from overseas that has encouraged cheating by diving, by giving clubs obscene amounts of money thus encouraging a large number of foreign imports that chase the dollar. This has affected our National side as UK bred players have limited chances in the PL as room for failure is minimal, £1m lost per place in the table (correct me if I'm wrong?). SKY even dictates a large number of games being moved to Sunday kick off's at 4pm, which impacts family life due to the fact that most families sit down for lunch on a Sunday and kids have to go to school on Monday so getting home at 8pm+ on a Sunday is hardly good preparation? Do they care? No in my opinion!

As the speed of the game from end to end is faster than any ref can keep up with, why not have a ref in each half of the pitch stopping at the halfway line. Agreed it wouldn`t take away the human errors but it would take away a lot of the problems of the ref not keeping up with the ball and seeing the offending moment from 30-40 yards away more often than not with an impeded view.
Cheaper than cameras and no waiting for video replays.

More officials is certainly something we can learn from American Football. I know the game is very different, in that gridiron consists of brief explosive plays, but having refs to watch specifically for certain fouls is a good idea. But all these improvements wont happen while Blatter is alive.
