Does This Season Represent Progression?

With The Hammers sitting mid table and this being the likely resting place for the 2018/2019 season, has progress been made, or should we be expecting more? We take a look over the high’s and lows and consider what we should expect in 2019/2020.

The season started pretty abysmally, seeing us lose our first four games. We were firmly rooted to the foot of the table and plenty of bookies were tipping us for the drop. But if we look at who we played and how the season has panned out, losses against Liverpool, Arsenal and even Wolves shouldn’t be seen in such a terrible light, given those respective team’s performances over the season. These were also Pellegrini’s first games in charge and it can take time for a team to gel and play to the style that any new manager requires.

Things picked up from there and slowly we began to climb the table. Victories against Everton and Man Utd, as well as a draw against Chelsea saw us climb to 14th and from there it was a gradual progression with consistent results helping The Hammers drive Northwards in the table.

Since the turn of the year, results have been steady. Some would argue that we should be aiming for top 6 and victories against the Likes of Tottenham and Arsenal show that the potential is definitely there. If we can prevent the malaise of end of season syndrome, which resulted in 3 losses on the bounce, this is certainly possible.

The emergence of some young players, Declan Rice in particular have been a particular highlight and suggest that there is a reason to be optimistic next season. It will also be Pellegrini’s 2nd season in charge and provides another foray into the transfer market. If the board back him, there is no reason why we can’t see an improvement in the next campaign.

Pretty much feel the same...apart from a few games against teams in the bottom half, though the prem is a pretty unforgiving league & on their day most teams can beat anyone!!last 3 games, unlucky against manure & leicester & beating the spuds shows we are progressing imo with el pel,the stadium is a different matter

Your both right, and agree.I feel Pellegrini is the man to take us forward,he knows what is required at top level, the pardews and allardyces of this world, dont have what knowledge to take a team to the top level, theres managers, and then theres managers.Im sort of happy with where we are in the league, especially after the poor start, but feel we could of pushed for higher, even making a cup final, but i blame Arnie for that with the disruption he caused with this china bollocks, which in my opinion was a major disruption that went through the team, and showed itself in the wimbledon game, which in turn led us to struggle through the latter half of the season, though spanking the north london lot at their new ground, has certainly been the biggest highlight for me this campaign.

and the amount of injuries we have had this season I have to agree that it's been ok. With a few decent signings and getting rid of players that just don't seem to be cutting it next season should see an improvement that will have us all excited.

Was a massive loss. Take into account the amount of time Lanzini was out, not to mention not having available Carroll, Wilshere, Nasri and Sanchez, then I think we can say for Pellis baptism season it's been quite impressive. Even more impressive is how we've gone a whole season without hearing a dickie bird from Gold, Sully or the kid brat.. I do think the defence needs an overhaul next season, as having Fabianski as a saviour in so many matches this season has shown. Looking forward to next season although I think the players in/out door will be revolving quite a lot.

We've had some good results, beating Manure 3-1, Spuds 1-0 at their new dunny, the 1-1 draw with Liverpool even the defeats to Chelski and Manc City showed we can compete, but the other side of the coin shows the horrendous inconsistency that haunts this club. Home defeats to Bournemouth, Spuds, Watford, Everton, and losses to Burnley, Brighton, AFC Wimbledon and Cardiff all highlight the despair of being a Hammer. Two things I want to see next season are an improved squad delivering more often and VAR eliminating the shocking calls made by linesman and referees that invariably favour the big 6. We'll see then how those teams cope without the referees helping em out.
Would love to see us turn Watford over and swap places with them in the league but wouldn't surprise me to see us end the season on a whimper
