Four for Three crucial points - West Ham 4-2 Wolverhampton Wanderers

West Ham have finally achieved victory in the Championship in Gameweek 4. The Hammers took on Wolves where a blockbuster strike by Divine Mukasa was followed by Bowen converting a penalty to give us the lead at the break. Mukasa achieved his brace in the second half and Mavropanos also got on the scoresheet, meaning all three points were secured.

West Ham should be proud of their performance against Wolves, it flipped the switch on the complaints that have been made, it was still far from perfect.

The courtesy of heart-attack backline defending and brutally late goal kicks made it a stressful 90. But ultimately, the goals were enough for the three points.

West Ham still faced other difficulties, often being their own biggest enemies. Wolves’ first goal was through a poor mistake by Konstantinos Mavropanos and the second was triggered by a lapse of concentration, something that needs work.

However, whilst the negatives can be dissected. The positives do need to be reiterated.

The team tonight seemed the most ‘gelled together’ in comparison to the other games this season. Passes were correctly made, communication seemed spot on, all in all it was a reassuring performance. By no means was it mesmerising, but it was all three points… though someone might need to check on the crossbar, Mav must’ve damaged it!

Nuno’s tactic to play Arne Engels and Mukasa as fluctuating holding midfielders was something new. Whilst Engels pressed forward and on the opposition, Mukasa would hold back and once Engels returned to his location, Mukasa would look to move into the forward areas, I suspect this will be something Nuno will utilise in the future.

In addition to the victory, West Ham also announced the signing of Nottingham Forest’s centre-back, Morato. The 25-year-old has signed on loan for the season, and the deal contains an option to buy.
