Pardew was incensed with the decision to give a penalty to Benteke in the CP/Pooh gave the other day, and despite his rambling interview post match where he didn't cover himself in glory was honest enough that his substitutions had zero effect on the game.
Despite his protestations about the timing of the penalty, doesn't matter if it's 1st or 91st, I personally thought Benteke dived. If the player had missed him, I reckon he still would have hit the deck looking for it, but despite the minimal contact (I know, the payer is entitled to go down from the contact), to me it really showed poor sportsmanship yet again. Must be a Scouse thing, cheating, after Besic' s dive in the WH match. So I guess after that I have 2 questions
1, Did he dive?
2, Is minimal contact sufficient to award a pen?
In short 1. Yes 2. No. Of
In short 1. Yes 2. No. Of course he dived I was shocked Hartson agreed it was on motd. Expected lawrenceson to defend it tho
Of course it was a dive, how
Of course it was a dive, how else was he gona have the opportunity to get on the score sheet, didn't you see him throw his wetsuit and snorkel to the bin dipper fans at the end, that Great Barrier Reef Training Course served him well ;)
It's was the double
It's was the double somersault, pike and tuck that swayed my decision
That has to go down as one of
That has to go down as one of the best two dives in history. Bettered only by Elvis in Fun in Acapulco........!
Yes it was a dive.
I found it shocking to see THAT penalty given at 90+6. You gotta be sure. Ref didn't think it was a pen, but lino did and he got his way. Contact was minimal. Benteke was past Delaney, but he wasn't actually in a great position to score -- he'd have had to beat the keeper at his near post. Yes, penalties have been given for less (our match against Everton a case in point), but equally they've not been given for much more serious infractions (When Ogbonna was literally dragged down in the area recently -- BLATANT penalty). As they say, you make your own luck, but the "big" teams get more of it.
Yes
Even the 'pool fans ( all but one ) at work said yes he dived
Going to keep it short 1..

Me and Arsene couldn't see from where we were sitting.

OK, I could get slaughtered
OK, I could get slaughtered for this but it would be remiss not to throw it out there for some debate if we're not gonna be compared to the fans of other clubs in thinking we're above it all but here it is. Did the great man dive to try and win a pen?
Looking at the two incidents and there ain't much in them. One's given, the other not, showing the inconsistency in ref decisions, but that's not the talking point.
The contact was minimal, he was looking for it and in the eye's of the law, contact means penalty but did it warrant him going down?
Moore2 I was waiting for
Moore2 I was waiting for someone to bring this up and well done for doing so. My view is it was a mildly better penalty call than benteke. Yes he was clipped so no booking but as I don't think minimal contact is a pen I'm saying no penalty in my view. After initially moaning about it the ref got it right in the way I want the game to ref it. Having said that we all know if Payet was playing for manure lvg wouldn't be calling Payet a cheat and also demanding and getting a penalty.
OK, I'm partisan to West Ham, but ...
yes, I'd have to agree that the Benteke penalty and the Payet non-penalty were similar. Now I said Benteke dived, so I feel like I should say that Payet did too. But Rojo makes much more contact with Payet than Delaney made with Benteke, and Delaney was clearly trying to pull out of the tackle, whereas Rojo was not. The really sad thing about it all is that the Benteke penalty was given, they scored, and Liverpool won, whereas the Payet non-penalty would have changed the game in ways we will never know. All things considered, I have to say Atkinson made a fair call on the spur of the moment, but a replay would have had to have awarded the penalty, I see no other possible decision -- there is contact, Rojo slides in, not even close to the ball, penalty all day.
