Wout Weghorst could become the latest Eredivisie goal machine to try his hand in English football.

According to RTV Oost, it is 99 per cent certain that Weghorst will bid farewell to AZ Alkmaar this summer, after plundering a career-best 18 goals in 31 starts for John Van den Brom’s free-flowing side in the 2017/18 season.

And the report claims that West Ham United are keen to bring the former Heracles front man to the London Stadium, although there is also allegedly concrete interest from clubs in Germany.

West Ham have shown far greater ambition in the transfer window than they have in previous summers, smashing their transfer record to sign 21-year-old centre-back Issa Diop from Toulouse for £25 million while closing in on a deal for Lazio’s Brazilian speedster Felipe Anderson.

It is unknown how much Weghorst would cost the Hammers but, considering that AZ demanded £18.6 million from their bitter rivals Tottenham for Vincent Janssen in 2016, the three-capped Dutch international will not come cheap.

West Ham fans, however, will be hoping that Weghorst is a much bigger success in England than Janssen was.

Strong in the air and a fierce leader of the line, the 6ft 6ins warrior of a centre-forward appears a perfect fit for the British game.

And, since joining AZ from Heracles in 2016, he has scored an impressive 45 goals in 86 games; a record better than one-in-two.
