Hammers Hunt Takes A 'Cheaper' Turn

Submitted by Louis Nixon on Sat, 02/08/2025 - 09:09

For the past month, West Ham United have tried every trick in the book in an attempt to sign a goalkeeper for the upcoming season. After a few names had been ruled out, it seemed to have settled down to the coaching staff’s choice of Mads Hermansen and Potter and Macaulay’s choice of Zion Suzuki…

That was all we thought! West Ham yesterday sent an offer worth up to €8m to Botafogo for Brazilian goalkeeper John Victor.

The goalkeeper has impressed and also attracted other clubs such as Manchester United and Galatasaray. However, despite his good performances in the league and the Club World Cup, it is understood that he was neither the preference of Potter nor the staff, but it was David Sullivan who believed the goalie was more ‘value for money’ in comparison to the other targets.

The €8m bid has now been rejected by Botafogo, and it’s unknown whether the Hammers will return with another bid, but a goalkeeper will be signed before the start of the season; it’s just a question of who?

Will it be option: (A) The goalkeeper coaches’ target, Hermansen, (B) Graham Potter's ‘dream’ target in Zion Suzuki, (C) Sulky Sull’s low bid.

Just been watching YouTube videos of Suzuki and I'm not so sure, For sure he is athletic and has quick reflexes but he has a severe habit of pushing saves back into the box. Not too many clips of how he deals with corners either. I can't see the likes of Isak, Wissa, Salah, Pedro etc. passing up on those rebounds like those clips show. Yes, he'd be an upgrade on Areola but so would Hannah Hampton
