are we incompetent?

the board that is. i know there is a lot of respect for the owners etc and I'm not trying to be disrespectful but i look at us as a prem league club and every time the transfer window opens we act like a bunch of amateurs. I'm not just moaning about the lack of good signings, I'm talking about the manner in which we do business. why is it this way with us? everton get linked with a young 19 yo striker, Lookman. next thing you hear is they have signed him for 10 mill. no fuss, no nonsense, deal done. we on the other hand issue a paltry 5 mill for defoe, it hits the news and it of course gets dismissed. there is talk of another bid, 12 mill or something but actually this apparently was more like 7 mill. it gets dismissed and sunderland say he's not for sale, go away. we go to hull and offer a ridiculous 3 mill for snodgrass. it hits the breaking news….it of course gets dismissed. then we're linked with hogan, and we duly put in a 10 mill bid. did we ask brentford how much they valued him? they then say he's valued at 15 mill, so we of course go and bid 12 mill. I'm sorry but its just laughable. who exactly is running the clubs transfers? did they sit down with Bilic a few weeks ago and identify exactly who he wants and needs? did they then go and 'sound out' these players? this is what other clubs do. we look like we had a quick chat with Bilic down the pub the day before the window opened, he says he needs a striker so we phone up sunderland and say 5 mill for defoe, then 3 mill for snodgrass at hull as Bilic didnt ask for him but we saw him score a great free kick the other day….i mean come on.

Put it here mate as it's more for you're thread...

I think we have to be careful here. Firstly who are we to say what are player is worth anyway? Who of us have ever been involved with player recruitment for a premiership football team? Also just to add, before I get crucified for sticking up for the board, I think that the summer transfers were crap too, and they gave a lot of false hope. False hope to those especially turning up week in week out, hoping to see a good performance. However none of us said these players weren't good enough when we signed them. We only know they're not good enough because of hindsight. Llorente is being tipped for Chelsea, yet he could have failed as much as Zaza. Bathshuyi who we all wanted is now being offloaded, there's a bit of luck involved too. Secondly I think it's very easy to spend other peoples' money. Snodgrass has has a decent half of a season. all of a sudden he's the answer to our prayers, at any cost? I remember him being touted to come to us a few season ago when we were in the Chumps. Nobody was banging the drum then? Also Scott Hogan, never heard of him before Jan, is now a £15 million player? Totally untried at Prem level and with a dodgy knee. We have to be careful not to panic buy and end up with another Carroll. And Lastly, I remember a time when a player arrived at a club and we heard bout through the papers, with a photo of him holding up a shirt. Now because of social media, we know everything, in fact too much IMO. If it was my money, would I go in for Defoe at £15 million? No way I'd make a low offer to see what reaction I got. If they came back and said it's too low, it means they would sell. If they came back and said F off it means they would never sell. It's basic negotiating. You don't go into a car showroom and say I want that car, they tell you how much and say hurry up some else will buy, and you fall for it, so why do you with football transfers? If they go silent and say nothing, then we'd accuse them of lacking ambition, and penny pinching, porn kings, dodgy gezzers. If they let out who they're going for we accuse them of lacking ambition, and penny pinching, porn kings, dodgy gezzers. It's a lose lose situation.

But. Last season we recruited Lansing, Payet, Antonio, Obiang, Randolph and Ogbonna, who have all been form ok to good signings. It doesn't happen all the time. This summer it didn't come off. If we only buy proven Prem players, then those players won't leave their club to come to us. For instance Rodriguez at Southhampton, a player I've always liked, wouldn't leave there to come to us, he'd go to a top 5 team, we're a side step, not a rung up the ladder. Plus the team he's at now wouldn't want to let him go really, or cheaply or to a team in their competitive space. So we are left with players at bigger clubs that can't get a game, like the Sturridges, Bathshuyai's etc... that then depends on the players, if they want to leave a big club, of the chance of playing. Then we have the reality that if they're not good enough for the top tier teams they're tire two team players and how do we progress? I'd love to see it as cut and dry as you do, but I think it's an absolute nightmare

I don't think there are people in the know, or not many. And if they are they're probably with the big boys around Europe. The know how to negotiate as they did with th banks to buy the club and the OS, whether we like them or not they are good business men. When I saw Zaza score that goal in the friendly inn August, I thought happy days we're were going to push top four. Since then he's been dross. When Caller went through one on one, can't remember who against i think Bournemouth, if he's have scored might he have gone on a run, don't know. I think luck has more to do with it than a perfect science. Throw enough shit at the wall some of it will stick. Lol. Sadly regardless of opinion, we'll probably get Snodgrass, his missus won't like London and he'll be shit and Hogan will do his cruciate 15 mins into his debut.
