What to do with Maiga?

Submitted by fred149 on Sat, 21/03/2015 - 23:15

Just thinking that next season the chances are we will have Maiga back. Now i'm not his biggest fan and if a decent bid comes in I think we should let him go, but does anybody reckon we should give him a 2nd chance next season and give him a chance to work with sheringham? Because its clear that he has some ability but has often been mis used and low on confidence. My biggest problem was his work ethic but could Maiga come good under sheringham and the diamond tactic we now employ?

decent point Fred, Teddy could make a difference but we have (and hopefully will keep) Sakho and Valencia we also have Amalfitano and possibly Zarate (the latter seems to have let his head drop). The board I am sure will look at whether he is a luxury we can afford but personally If a decent bid comes in I think he will let go and be back off to France. No doubting his potential and you make a valid point regards the diamond formation but maybe too late for him and what bothers me is his work ethic. Good post though.

There is nothing they can do but run his contract out. They have had no bids for him plus they offered to pay him a lump sum up front but he turned it down. He wanted the full amount or he would just see out his contract.

He's absolute garbage mate and I would rather see Elliott Lee get a chance, but he won't as our manager doesn't have the gonads.

He's another example of poor management unfortunately Fred, bought him based on his goalscoring ability and then tried playing him everywhere (including on the wing!) other than in a 2 up front formation, this takes away any confidence the player came with and you end up with a disillusioned, disinterested expensive player, I expect to see Valencia go the same way

Completely agree, but hope you're wrong about Valencia -- maybe he wont have the chance eh? Sam keeps trying to force players into positions where they aren't comfortable, especially forwards -- another example of why I think he is not a good coach when it comes to attacking tactics. Another example is Downing, I've never been a big fan of his, but was amazed at how well he did playing in the hole, at the tip of the diamond. Yet Sam persists with him on the wing, where he is usually so ineffective we might as well not have him there! Last season Downing and Jarvis had 1 goal and 0 assists between them (I think!) Yet Sam kept on with the same futile formation.

I agree with the comments that he was not played as one of a front two where he may have had the opportunity to develop, the fact that he has not had any joy back in France is a worry though. One year left on his contract I suspect he will go on loan to someone that will pay part of his wages,. Only hope is that having one year left prods him into life. Ironically I think if his head could be got right he would have a chance up front with Sakho, would be nice to see but highly unlikely and definitely won't happen under Sam, who has clearly given up on him
