Best team won make no mistake, not enough from us today.
Payet probably still not totally match fit but poor performance all round bar Jelavic who ran his socks off when he came on.
Nice to see Moses back on the pitch too...Onwards and upwards.
Very bad today!
Very bad today! we granted them to do what they wanted, we were soft and shortly determined. They seemed tired
I watched the whole of the second half!
Yes newcastle played well, but we had 2 chances at the end to equalise & could have had a penalty too.Away to newcastle on this form is a tough place to go,they are fighting for their lives! Was payet not match fit?some of his touches as ever were sublime...
I agree H65
I agree H65. the team as a whole seemed tired, perhaps suffered from the match on Tuesday
I think if Carroll was
I think if Carroll was playing we'd have done better ,there wasnt any bite in the area ,lost count of how many high balls went in to no one in particular, we need a menacing striker and soon
well said Burkie
well said Burkie. Especially in the final minutes they continued to put in high balls that did not serve to anything
Not a bad performance
It had to happen sooner or later. I still think Valencia is too lightweight, I know he can score goals but I do not think it outweighs the amount of times he has the ball taken from him. Thoughts?
he needs to develop retention and passing, fast
Lanzini has a slight build, but he retains possession, because he has good ball-carrying skills and can pick an outlet. So far, I haven't seen that Valencia is capable of either. And until he gets better at that (if he can), teams are going to press him as soon as he receives the ball. If you note his two goals against B'mouth, one was an instant volley into the net, the other a free kick -- in neither case was there time or opportunity to close him down. One of his scorchers last year (I think against Crystal Palace away) was a result of the defender standing off him. Now that they know to press him, he will not progress until he develops better skills (again, if he can).
Agreed La Vida Hammer, he is
Agreed La Vida Hammer, he is always getting knocked off the ball and when challenged he more often than not ends up rolling around as if he's seriously injured. However, I still think he's class and once he has a few more games under his belt I still think he'll be a star.
Tough loss to Newcastle
There are all sorts of excuses to be made. We all know how much the Hammers hate going up North. Newcastle have a better team than their position in the table shows. They are fighting relegation. We've played a lot of matches recently. The good run had to come to an end sometime. With Carroll injured we lack a certain punch up front. It's our second straight away match. But all those things just paper over the fact that we were in 5th place playing against a team in 19th place, and if we really have aspirations to Europe, it's matches like that we have to win. Add to that: we were down 2-0 by 15 minutes -- basically game over -- that's a VERY poor start for a 5th placed side, and the final score flatters us -- we really did not play that well. Don't get me wrong; I'm delighted with the Hammers this season, with Slaven's management (he got his subs right again), with the personnel, etc. etc. But lately I've been trying to get a judgement of where exactly we are now, and this loss suggests that sadly we may still be punching above our weight at 5th. Next up is Man City. Home or away that is not a match we can be favoured to win, and the current loss will damage confidence. The Villa at home match is must win and we can see from there how we go. A great ride this season, but still tough to say where we will end up.
Fantastic
critique there Ashes. I couldn't have put it any better if I'd written it myself. Why were WE not giving it to Newcastle in the first 20 minutes ? Once again we've made a side who are in the relegation zone look like title contenders. This happens far too often if we do have serious aspirations to be Champions League contenders.
Yes
He got his sub's right. Shame he got his starting XI wrong, and not for the first time this season either.
Slav!
imo what sets him apart from every egotistical manager in the prem is hes honest,no excuses, his quote-newcastle were the better team!I cant comment on the first half,i didnt see it but reports this morning are we should have been 2 or 3 down by half-time.Slavs team talk in the break must have worked,we got a lucky goal, fair enough but at the end we were so unlucky to not get a point,Me i dont get the negativity on here sometimes-special mention to our incredible fans, they must have got up bloody early to watch that game in the freezing cold, long, long journey up north! The hairs on my back were standing up when i could hear the "payet" song sung amongst 50,000 passionate geordies!!They are an absolute credit to westham...
Found out
It was a poor performance from us especially in the first half. Geordies were quicker to every ball and closed us down as soon as we had it hence the sideways and backways passing. Noble very ponderous today and our midfield looked second best. Kouyate still had a reasonable game. Cresswell was quiet and Payet playing out of position was less effective. I have to say we fell into the trap of losing a lot of ball again and some of the touches of Valencia is poor. Jelavic works hard but is not what we really need. We made Shelvey look really good but he had so much space to slot passes. Maybe we were tired but the second half did improve. Newcastle really wanted it today and that is the way it went. Now we have to recover for City in a weeks time which is no easy task. COYI.
We were simply not in the
We were simply not in the races today. There are days like these. Newcastle totally outplayed us and that 2-1 flatters us - they could have scored another 3/4 goals today. Valencia was back to his usual frustrating self. Kouyate from my point was again wandering around the pitch without any real purpose. We really need a player alongside Noble to help him get the ball rolling. Kouyate is just not doing that. Saw Payet ( who just like the rest didnt have a good game ) late on coming as deep as Collins/Ogbonna to pick up the ball. Let's not get too depressed with today's loss. Pretty much the typical West Ham performance up in Newcastle. Still need a Striker. Come on Sully get someone decent!
Don't buy
this tiredness excuse. Newcastle have played 3 games in a week just like us.
Agree, we just played and
Agree, we just played and marked poorly - no need to Try and justify it , all teams have days like this.
Disappointment.
Knocked back down to sixth place after Man United's lucky win over Liverpool. A draw would have not been sufficient to hurdle past West Ham. What a poor performance by the Hammers yesterday, especially in the first half. Apart from two opportunities to score in that half, we were in sixes and sevens. Payet who has been outstanding in the previous matches just did not get going, and was not influential as expected of him. His corner kicks and set pieces were not up to his usual standard. Noble was responsible for Newcastle's first goal. He is very hesitant as he indecisively spins around in circles and the enthusiastic Geordies dispossessed him far too easily to eventually get themselves on the scoreboard. This is something Bilic has to fix as it occurs far too often. Yes, Jelavic's unexpected substitution paid off as he was definitely our best player on the pitch in the second half, however, I thought that Obiang should have stayed on as he seemed to be one of our energetic players in the first half. To me Noble would have been the right choice instead. I am still optimistic that we can take all three points against Man City. Collins' injury in the first few minutes seemed to have slowed him a tad bit for the rest of the match, and his defensive duties were somewhat impeded. Ogbonna was a bit more resolute. Tompkins and Cresswell were caught out of position quite a few times. Apart from that glorious chance to pull one back in the dying minutes of the first half, Kouyate did not have much of an impact. Antonio was also non existent throughout the game. To me, Valencia was better in the second half as a winger, rather than a centre forward. Finally, you could not fault Adrian for both the goals conceded as the Hammers were caught out ball watching throughout the match. We need Sakho and Lanzini to change the style and pace of our play. To me, Noble seems to slow the pace at which West Ham tried to counter attack Newcastle. He has been a great servant of the club, however, we need another pacey midfielder to replace him, otherwise, the push for a Champions League or even Europa cup spot will fade into oblivion with performances like this one.
