What is a plastic fan, and am I one?

Just scouting the web as usual and have seen the expression "plastic fan" it's certainly a derogatory term used and I have seen a very good explanation of it. So in your view what is a plastic fan?

A plastic fan...mmm.See in all my years supporting westham i havnt come across any plastic westham fans maybe because ive always lived in what was & still is predominantly "westham areas".Our fellow orger "plaistow man" posted once on here that he had no choice he was born into it...Sums it up for me...For me a good example of a "plastic fan" (it is a bit derogatory nowadays but hey ho!!) would be man utd or liverpool fans down here in essex,who have never attended or wont ever attend a game,have no family connection to the areas,& suport these teams because of the success theyve had!The best thing about them is they like to preach to you how much they know about FOOTBALL!!Que the laughs all round....

Agree 65 a plastic fan to me is fans that jump on the bandwagon,just because the success of such team and the size of there trophy cabinet,glory hunters is the same thing ain't it,just like chelski for instance,until Abramovich took over,i bet half their so-called fans never even heard of em till he put them on the map,hence why west ham fans,sing where was you when you was shit

Plastic fans £9.99 on Queens Market - Not much call for them at the moment but they will be £19.99 in July..........

A plastic fan was one who supported a team who bought their winning ways by buying mega expensive players. Plastic being the "flexible friend" ala the credit card. Fits the Chelseas and Man City bill and to a lesser degree The Man Utd and Arsenal although all four teams could have fans called "
Glory Hunters"

On the subject of Plastic ain't them Plastic banknotes that can survive a spin in the washing machine out this year... Surely that will just encourage money laundering ;)

Good summarizing above. As an overseas fan people could say I am a plastic fan as well. I have seen my fair share of plastic fans in my country as well. People who support West Ham as a second favorite club and tend to care about our results only when we are winning ( lol so basically not quite often until recently ) also people who have been to the Boleyn and swear by West Ham but cant wait to jump on the bandwagon when something is not going right or someone is not playing according to the expectations. Supporters, not fans are that matter to me.

Good point about supporting only win we are winning.We just had a great run of 2 losses in 17,then its all doom & gloom again after the newcastle loss!Doesnt bode well for the future imo...

When people see me wearing my claret and blue bar scarf in Swansea and ask who I support I get the most strangest looks...
Why do you support West Ham, do you have family living up that way etc etc - I then mention Trevor Brooking, Bobby Moore, the Upton Park mud bath of a pitch, Billy Bonds and The Big Match / Brian Moore on Sunday afternoons (plus waiting for the half times on World Of Sport to see if Brian was reporting from Upton Park which meant we would be the main highlights on the Sunday!). Things start to make sense to their quizzical looks then (if they are old enough of course)....Proud as punch to have loved this club since 1972-1973....COYI!

Same age as me mate & as much passion as any westham fan born in the area or not!i love the thought of you parading round the valleys in your hammers shirt,if i ever visited swansea mate id be honoured to buy you a beer!!

Apart from the Swansea bit irons65 that's totally sums me up. Never lived near the ground but during the sane time as you I was seduced by the exciting football noise Brian Moore etc. I grew up listening to the radio in a cold kitchen at night during our European cup winners cup, biting my nails until my fingers red raw, bonds, Brooking and the like trying to play football in a mud bath. Roar of the crowd. Growing up in what at the time was a rural place, I was probably the only hammers fan and school I was the only one with the shirt. Knew everything about the team. Dad didn't take me due to the trouble so only got down when I started working. Just as happy watching the team in the second tier, been taking my son as he is mad keen but can only get down 2 or 3 times a season due to commitments. Doubt there there are many plastic fans as in my opinion they attach themselves to glory unless you think I'm a glory hunter?

The sad truth is the bit about stadium noise.There was a thread recently about the atmosphere in the boleyn,a few of us mentioned the lack of passion & noise in certain parts of the ground.ive sat everywhere over the years & apart from the east stand upper & lower near the away fans,the whole of the bobby moore lower & the trevor brooking lower i cant believe the lack of noise & passion.doesnt bode well for the future...
