Money has ruined the game

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 02/08/2017 - 08:19

reading ANTKB post about the women's football and also the general comments made about football these days, its pretty obvious that money has destroyed the game. i think because its 'crept' in we've digested it and somehow accepted it. however i think we (fans of all teams) have realised that the game we used to love to watch is dead and in its place is some Khardasian reality show. we've been fed all this nonsense about players 'playing too much football', needing to be rested for 60 mins of a game, being taken off 15 mins early to 'rest them'. i remember (showing my age) looking back on the cup final of 1980, i was very young then so it became more relevant when i watched it over later. but we had one substitute. players went out on the pitch with no desire whatsoever to not play 90 mins in those days. in fact injuries and all, they carried on. if you were still breathing then there was football to be played. i know the argument is that the game has improved, that the pace is much faster, that the players are fine tuned in fitness etc. but theres a fundamental lack of desire, courage and work ethic that has been lost along the way. its all down to the money. its crept its way into the game like a cancer and now the game is rotten to the core even at international level. we see players demanding a new contract, being given one and then demanding to leave the club a few months later. we see players refusing to play in certain positions or to a certain style. is it modern mentality or simply because their lives are so cushy that theres no need for them to be loyal and work hard? look at ravel morrison, a player with great potential. given chance after chance and squandered. would he have squandered those chances if he wasnt a millionaire? a millionaire for what has amounted to a pretty average at best career too. people argue but it cuts both ways, the clubs show no loyalty to players so why should they? but how can clubs show loyalty when the players are the ones with all the power to do as they please? back in years gone by the atmosphere between players and clubs was that the player was grateful for the opportunity, was rewarded for good performance with his pay packet and if told he wasnt moving clubs, then he wasnt moving clubs end of. if the club sold him, then so be it. its amazing how the game has changed. big clubs like arsenal and barcelona now being ruled by player power. you can argue but its fairer, the player gets to decide on his future just as an employee at a company would do. yes, true. but the game is in ruins. clubs are simply vessels for players to move to and from in search of the best pay packet and highest profile for themselves. thats the nature of the modern game. add to this the ticket prices we now pay and we see its us who's funding the lavish lifestyles of the greedy players. its us that watch it on t.v and pay sky or whoever for the privilege who in turn plough money into the players pockets. football is a business yes, but its not like the everyday high street business. its also a sport. personally the biggest mistake made imo is that no one decided that a wage cap, transfer cap etc should be enforced years back. we're now at 220 mill or so for a player…instead of players being worth a new car or house, they are now worth the cost of building a new stadium. huh? instead of buying Neymar, PSG could buy a new stadium….thats where we've got to.

and that is why I will not pay to watch a game anymore, live or on the tv. far too much money in the game. But its not only football, so called tv presenters doing a job that 50% to 60% of the population could do.

To the days when our own great Mr William Bonds would be called into the office at the end of the season to discuss his contract,"all im interested in is playing for westham, pay me what you like!!"

More of a well wisher. While agree that money has compromised the game, the purchase of an occasional ticket or shirt does support the club, hence you may call yourself a west ham supporter. While I feel your enthusiasms for west ham to do well and win games, and even your knowledge of the game may be superior to mine, you are not a supporter.

I hate the NEW football very little of is better than the 80s. Maybe the players are but its more than what goes on on the pitch. Football has generally lost me as a fan. How can a wage cap do anything other than improve things? FIFA have stood watched and done nothing about the important things either. So now the game is in danger of disappearing up its own ar@e

FIFA have not stood idly by. They have very much had their noses buried in the money trough and fuelled the game as it now stands. Look at that little Swiss rodent who reigned supreme for so long and went back on his word just to ensure that the money that flooded in made it's way to his/their coffers too. It's a truly sad state of affairs.

I wouldn't notice if football were slower, but I would definitely notice if the ethos was proud, courageous, loyal, team-driven, fan-driven. One day this scourge of money will pass away. (Well, the ultra rich will still have their "game", but we won't care.) And we may be watching football on a cinder pitch, but it will be ours and it will be glorious.

Great pots Dicksy, about time!! If I'm honest I love West Ham as it's in my blood and a family tradition that dates back to when the club started. However I've now got to the point where I go because my kids want to go. I can't stand the modern day player. They way they stroll past all these kids clambering for autographs, pretending to listen to their oversized headphones. Who cares? Most of them are average, are couple are great, but at what, kicking a f***ing ball!? Getting up at 05:00 in the morning going to work, providing, caring, stressing, being the best person you can, regardless of wealth is what life's about. These players are unimportant, they do nothing with their fame, wealth or notoriety to help anyone else apart from them and their own. Plus add to that Sky's nonstop love fest with Liverpool, Man City, Man Utd, Chelsea and Arksnal I'm sick of it TBH.

I'm giving you the thumbs up on that post betty. Could this be the only subject we all agree upon? Just a spark to report on, young declan rice went on the supporters coach after one of the frendlies to chat and thank supporters for their efforts. Well done young lad

skys love in with those clubs makes me glad I do not subscribe to them but I think being able to watch your own club live not through dodgy streaming sites is not to far away....I only want to watch west ham and happy to pay for that...if I want to watch a big clash fine pay a bit extra but that would be your choice..i see BT and there champs league coverage is changing with the red button allowing you to watch a league cup or league game played on same night whys that well champs league is bloody bloated and tedious only the knockout stages worth watching imo.

With paying for a one off game, however the premier league receive a lot of cash by selling around the world, why not let the uk watch the live games free or at a low price, they are too greedy.

All sorts of news items this morning about how West Ham "almost signed Neymar" for £12M, obviously because he's going for nearly 20x that now. But the truth is that was all smoke and mirrors -- Santos wanted £28M for him even then (which was a gigantic fee at the time) and West Ham was never going to be able to pay that. So even tough we made a formal offer, it was never really a serious one.

It sure has dicksy,it's all about telephone number deals, can't keep up with it all, remember when trevor frances became the first million pound player in England, and I thought to myself back then the games gone mad lol,but now it's gone totally off the scale ridiculous, another thing that makes me laugh, moreen gets rid of lukku for 28 mil because he thought he was shit, and then buys him back for 75 mil + 15mil add ons BONKERS!

That to me says a lot about Morinho. He's gotten by with a lot of cash available to him and it's almost possible to deliver. e's now saying the 200mil spent on Neymar is not a lot of money! Might not be to you pal but there's over 5billion people worldwide who would totally disagree with you!! Total muppet, miserable as sin and delusional to boot!

I had a post last week " where will it all end " and at that time I didn't think that transfer would happen. To be honest I think Barcelona picked that number out of the sky thinking no club would ever come near it. Think you're spot on with everything you say DICKS. To show how crazy it's all gone you can go on-line and look at what they call debt counters of any Country in the world and it will show you in real time the country's debt going up or down. I saw one today for Naymar's earnings and he hasn't kicked a ball yet.
