The irony of West Ham United's 'poor' January transfer window is that the club top the Barclays Premier League spenders list for the window that closed at 11pm last night. The conversion of a loan to a permanent deal for Said Benrahma from Brentford meant that the Irons have topped what has been an extraordinarily low spend.
Clubs throughout Europe are struggling to deal with the financial fall out caused by the Covid -19 pandemic and it's new variants, no one, even the normal massive spenders, are doing any significant business until there is some form of light visible at the end of the tunnel.
The reluctance of the Hammers hierarchy to give David Moyes the funds to bring in another striker has been highlighted by fans groups as yet another example of a 'cheap arsed' board that only have eyes for Barclays Premier League survival, NOT for competing in Europe.
The grim reality is that the board backed the WRONG manager when they opened the purse strings for Manuel Pellegrini, in fact they didn't just open the purse, they emptied it of all it's contents and more some! There is no point in crying about it, it is what it is, however all is not entirely lost.
The need for an additional striker is obvious, 'Yarmo be there' is NOT the answer, the Ukranian is just not a Premier league striker, so someone else needs to be brought in. Due to the transfer window's closure only free agents can be signed, and there are a few around, the cream of the crop being Diego Costa!
Yes he is old, and probably demands big money, but he knows the Barclays Premier League well, and is just the sort of 'combative' player David Moyes needs and likes. We are aware of having 'banged on' about Costa in previous Org articles, however as a short term solution he ticks all the boxes, he is available and has expressed an interest in coming back to England.
We know Costa does NOT fit Moyes's young and hungry template, but in the current climate and given the current circumstances, acquiring Costa on a short term deal is a no brainer, but of course brains are required to see it! - Ed
