Downing on his way?

Strong rumours that the Downing to Boro deal is done at 5 or 6 million. Who do we replace him with? I'd go for Kevin Mirallas... other suggestions?

I hear the Spuds are close to tying up Mirallas with Lennon set to move to Everton as a makeweight in the deal, £3.5million for Mirallas sounds a steal bully!

Plenty of time left I guess, I just hope if Downing goes they replace him with a quality player, and don't just let Payet be his replacement: we need to improve not just swap players.

Apparently Song is having a second medical this week and will probably sign along with Jenks. The other 2? Maybe Lanzini the Argentinian and Destro?

Yeah, but I don't count Jenks as a 'new signing' cus he was here last year so is maintaining the squad not improving it. I'd like to see another attacking/creative midfielder/winger to replace Downing + another right back + another attacker + Song or replacement. Guess a lot will depend on who else can be shipped out, and for what dosh.

I'm a bit surprised by this one, he's certainly not the worst player in our squad, would've thought with the extra games we'll have he would be worth keeping, and then going to Boro? seems strange unless it's for family reasons

I think he wants to go home, and maybe go on to coaching up there. He's 31 next week so might be a good time to be thinking about where and what he wants to do as his playing career starts to run down. And if we get what we paid for him, or a little more, would be good business for us I guess.

Kevin Mirallas is the ideal fit for Westham replacing Downing. It is goals from midfield that Westham need to improve on Bilic stated in his post-match interview yesterday he would be an ideal candidate as his goals to games ratio is excellent.Plays as a winger and as a forward. Max Gradel another who ticks the boxes

I think that Payet will replace Downing. Agree, we need a full-back and a midfielder of fantasy. For me it was one of our problems the lack of a creative midfielder and unpredictable.

We get rid of two players for one of the best strikers in England

I heard somewhere that Downing himself had said that the deal depended on WestHam getting in a suitable replacement (NOT Payet.)

The club he currently plays for Al Jazira is only owned by Sheikh Mansour Al-Nahyan if he's any good we know where he'll end up £ity

I think Stuart is class and typical of the type of player we need. Yes we have started to strengthen the squad with new arrivals but I think with the European matches this will take its toll so expect injuries. He's also English and surely rules on home grown will take effect? We are yet to bring in a Brit since the arrival of Bilic and this could bite us on the bum at some stage!

I also read that but I thought Bilic was liked by the players and would keep quality players, as he said keeping ENGLISH players was important. Maybe I am just a bit grumpy (already) that we can only muster a one win against a Maltese Pub team!

Yeah, I also heard that Downing wanted to end his playing career back home, and has probably arranged to go into the coaching side with Boro as and when he can't play any more, so he's thinking of the future. I've never been a big fan of his, but it's important we get a quality player to replace him, I'd still say Mirallas but he seems a bit of a big-head, so maybe this boy from PSG???

From what I've read today it seems like he prefers to drop down and try and get Boro promoted rather than try and get a midtable position with West Ham, I suppose that speaks volumes particularly when Slav tried to keep him, I still think we need a few players yet to give the manager a chance next season, particularly midfield, I see this as a big problem area, if Song isn't fit then we need someone else who can go straight into the first 11

Agreed, attacking midfield is woefully short. With Downing gone we need 2 top class offensive midfielders to support/backup Payet, and I don't mean Sully specials who might or might not come off, I mean experienced quality players. I think that's more important than getting another striker.

Completely agree bully, if we get one or two injuries (and you can bet your life we will!) then we don't have enough quality to do well in the Prem or cup competitions, I think Lee could play a part this season so we've got extra up front anyway with Zarate as well if needed, just think our midfield could be the part of the side that lets us down

Shame. I thought Downing was our best player ( along with Song ) until the end of our good run. Afterwards disappeared like the rest of the squad. Would have been nice to have him around for this year. A lot of tough games ahead and he would have had a big part to play. Not sure on this Lanzini bloke we are supposedly gonna sign. Unproven and coming from UAE. Sully special written all over him ( even though it's said that Bilic is an adrmired ).

Gervinho is another name being touted around, wasn't that impressed with him at Arsenal, don't know how he's done at Roma though

im sorry to see him go , genuine ,with a big heart , i positive he played all his career in the wrong position , he's a natural central midfield creative type , he became extinct under the dinosaur

Well, I wasn't sad when he left but was polite. But now I feel able to say what I really think about him: you played 6 or 7 games for us where you were very good over the course of 2 years, but the rest of the time you were a wimpy miserable waste of space who was terrified of being tackled or of tackling anybody else. Good riddance.

So what did he want slav said i'd love you to stay ain't that good enough,or did he expect slav to nibble on his ear and whisper sweet nothings lol

Well it blows the theory that players wouldn't come for Sam but they would for Bilic out of the window doesn't it. With the exception of Zarate, I haven't heard one player criticise Sam since he's left.

Why would they? They've had an easy ride of it since January and the guy was loyal to his favourites despite the detriment to the team.
