Hammers Eye Mateus Fernandes’ Replacement

Submitted by Louis Nixon on Thu, 02/07/2026 - 11:37

As well as West Ham’s kit release this morning, Mateus Fernandes has officially been announced by Spurs, concluding the rumours and marking the end of what felt to be an impending saga.

With Fernandes’ sale generating West Ham £85m, a replacement needs to be found, and it appears that the Hammers were ahead of the curve, anticipating Fernandes’ departure long before the confirmation and have found their man that they believe should replace Mateus.

You’ll have to head off to France to find our target, Martin Adeline, a French box-to-box midfielder who flourished in FC Troyes’ promotion campaign from Ligue 2 to Ligue 1, achieving 20 G/A in 32 matches.

The tricky Frenchman tends to play in a more attacking role, more as a 10, if you will, but given the role Fernandes played at West Ham, he’ll play in the box-to-box role that Nuno will want to maintain across the Championship season.

The club had been holding back partly this transfer window due to the World Cup campaign, but more so, the club were focusing on fixing the behind-the-scenes issues before July 1st, as the Premier League financial rules still applied to West Ham whereas now they don’t.

Player developments will now come thick and fast now that we’re entering the countdown to the end of the World Cup, as well as entering July, where the campaign starts in just 36 days.

Desasi is a must if a deal can be done. Been doing a little bit of scouting during the WC. Quite like the look off Canada Right back Alistair Johnstone. Currently at Celtic.

I see a fair amount of Scottish football and Johnstone is not what we need in the champs! Too lightweight and gets turned far too easily, he flatters as he plays for Scotlands top side.

Said it before. We should push for Hayden Hackney from Borough, taylor made replacement for Fernandes and a quality young player to boot..

Also, what is the Charlie Cresswell situation is he still available? I think if enough quality players stay. Say we only lose Fernandes and Summerville. Surely we must piss this league and attract players on this basis?

Ten men couldn't carry, couldn't carry Lampard.. Klint!!!

Agreed, Boogers, but sadly Hackney is already off to Everton - the deal is already 99% done. As for Cresswell, Brighton were the top admirers but have since signed Vuskovic, so I wouldn't be surprised if his name comes up again... got a feeling it'll be him or Disasi
