Hernandez or Austin?

Submitted by Brooking is a legend on Fri, 24/07/2015 - 13:59

The end of last season, and our European venture so far, have definitely confirmed that our missing piece fo the jigsaw is a striker of proven quality. Despite all new signings, up front we are simply the same as last season without Carlton Cole (unless you count Maiga coming back, which I don't). I'm also a bit nervous that all of our new signings are not proven in the Premiership. Up front, I'd now like to see a proven goalscorer in the Premiership join us. As the start of the season is fast approaching, that seems to be coming down to two people, Austin or Hernandez. In all honesty, I'll be happy with either as I think they are both just the sort of player that we need. What would be your preference?

Austin has a better scoring record, but that was, all but one year, outside the PL. So it's a tough choice, but I think our owners seem uninterested in Austin but do want Hernandez. Like you I'd take either AND Mirallas.

Hernandez has great movement which might fit our new look side, but, I worry that he's a little bit injury prone and we have enough of that sort of issue up front. Austin I think may be a bit more predictable, but would be more reliable. Maybe as you say he's a risk having only had one season in the Prem. £15m seems relatively good value to me, at least compared to other recent transfers.

It's a difficult choice, because Austin also has had injury problems, and failed a medical once (at Stoke?) cus of his bad knees...

I think Hernandez has the experience of competitive top level football behind him which is a big plus, that edges it for me,but definitely Mirallas

Hernandez all day long for me, has more ability and experience than Austin and unlike Austin has scored in top flight football consistently, I think Austin is a typical example of an overpriced British player and I hope we've learnt our lesson there after buying both Carroll and Jarvis for ridiculous money, if Austin was that good the top four would be snapping him up

Austin costs too much (he wants £85k a week) Hernandez is staying put unless Manure get another striker. We are ok with Sakho and Valencia imo and Samuelson, Zarate and Lee will be given chances as will Lanzini (midfield/striker) Knowing West Ham it will be a loan signing or a 30 something striker on a years contract and they will hope Andy Carroll is ok by Christmas.

I've heard (dunno how much truth there is in it) that the Hernandez deal is all agreed in principle, and is just waiting for ManU to buy another striker. Does anybody think LVG is finished spending with a month of the window left? The bloke spends money like water.

But I fear you might be! Sounds like Austin is too over priced from the tabloid rumours. We are left hoping Man U get a new striker in to cover Rooney, otherwise they'll keep Hernandez. It really worries me. Carroll could quite easily be out until Christmas, as you joke, and then announce he's the next Dean Ashton. Sakho won't be able to play all season. Valencia still has plenty to prove. We need someone else of proven quality. My fingers are still crossed for Hernandez, if Austin's going elsewhere.
