Wow wow wow! It's a VERY long time since I was as excited about a new player as I am about this chap. He's played for 20 minutes so far this evening, made 5 brilliant passes and made everyone else, including Zarate, look very good too!

Well, well, well... We play close to our first 11 for the last 30 minutes against Norwich...and, after looking slightly second best for an hour, suddenly look bloody good AND make Norwich look decidedly second-rate!

VERY encouraged by that half hour!

At last, we've had 20 mins of football worth talking about, let's hope we can continue that form for 90 mins on Thursday, still concerned that everything is hinging on Payet, I'm praying he stays fit

Yes that also crossed my mind. But did you also see how Noble was transformed by having a player like Payet in the side? One terrific through ball, and one great run deep into the box needing a desperate clearance... I haven't seen Mark play like that for yonks, he just needs to be encouraged to play more like that, and he could get back to his best.

We all know my feelings on Mr Noble, if he's starting against Arsenal and he's going to be first team choice then there will be no one more gutted than me, he'll offer no threat at all going forward, and as for getting back to his 'best' then I've missed that bully!

LOL I didn't remember you were such a non-fan! :) He's been poor for a long while, but if he plays like that consistently you won't need to feel gutted... there's that big IF word again.......

It's nothing personal to Mark, just think his love for the club clouds our judgment sometimes, hope he proves me wrong. It'll be interesting to see the starting 11 for Thursday, sounds like it's going to be a strong side, hope it is and we can get a couple of goals and make the away leg a bit less stressful than the last one.
Going forward though it looks like we will see more possession type football so I wonder how Slav will set the side up against Arsenal in the first game, it would be good to see him have a right go at them but then would he be playing into their hands, they're probably the best side in the league for moving the ball at speed, should be interesting

Yes, our record against Arsenal is poor, so to get anything from the Emirates game would be to expect a lot, but it will be interesting to see how we line up. The first of the season's difficult decisions for Bilic: balancing making sure we have a strong enough team to win the Astra tie in Romania, and have a strong side against Arsenal... where do you prioritise? Risking not winning the Astra game, against the (small) chance of getting something for the Arsenal game... not easy...

I think Noble's love of the club is a problem for him sometimes. He wants it so much that when the team isn't up to it he runs around like a headless chicken trying to do three jobs instead of doing his own job well. He is best playing deeper, breaking up play and moving the ball to a quicker player and I think he does that job as well as anyone.

The problem has so often been the lack of movement ahead of him, he doesn't have options and then can look cumbersome. He had his best spell early last season when Sakho and Valencia were doing so well zipping around up top, while Song was always an option moving forward through the middle. Played in his own role with options ahead I think he could have a great season

I notice people mentioning Zarate not releasing the ball quick enough, I have been a critic of his and share this frustration however he may also benefit from some decent, intelligent movement around him, I think sometimes it's easy for him to justify trying to take another player on because people are not offering enough options .

In that last 30 minutes I think we have just seen Bilic's first team (Sakho for Zarate maybe). I think the finishing 11 tonight will start on Thursday. The first hour was very much same old West Ham with stumbling Nolan and static Miaga making it a 9 man team, so much better when a bit of class came on the pitch in Payet and Cresswell. even Zarate perked up and started lookin very good with those accurate passes from Payet.

A D Bonds

didn't see the game but i just want to repeat my views on Zarati , i really think he could be one of our best signings in a long time , i was dumbfounded when he was let go to QPR , all over a silly bit of in fighting between the dinosaur and the dildo brothers , i reckon he's the same type of player as Hernandez , a little gem , really looking forward to the new season

I, too, think he's is an uncut diamond that could shine in a great 'team'; same as Noble without Nolan around him in the middle. Didn't see the game but hear all the good things about Payet bringing everyone into play and making them look good. Hope Slaven is saving him for Sundays and keeping him away from European games.

Dont know what made me smile more this morning.More good reports about payet,& zarate looking good or the reference to sam & sugo as "the dinosaur & the dildo brothers"...sounds like a prehistoric porn film!!! LoL

PSG wanted to sign him but, apparently Marseille wouldn't sell him due to the rivalry between the clubs. I am told that the rivalry is like the spuds v Assnal, according to a French guy at work with decent football knowledge. He is a class act and the marquee signing, probably the closest to Di Canio as a creative signing for too long. Zarate likes to get forward and attacking play is good but, he has to learn when to release the ball and allow others to join the play. Overall encouraging but I have big reservations over Zarate in the premier league.

That's the problem with Zarate: he alway seems to take one touch too many, tries to beat one man too many. Can't see him replacing Sakho or Valencia up front in our strongest team, but maybe Bilic can put his arm around him and whisper a few encouraging words of advice and turn Zarate's undoubted talent into productive team work. Payet is a different gravy!!!!!!

I think whats becoming apparant even in his short playing time for us is Payet has ability TO CREATE (and finish as well).

Its an awful long time since we have had that luxury at our disposal!!!

Whats vital as our country cousin rightly points out IS WE DONT RELY TOTALLY ON PAYET for this.

at this stage I have to be honest and say I have no idea what Obiong (?) or Lanzini MIGHT bring to the table but hopefully something good.

Ditto Zarate. But the truth of the matter with him is he has played quite a few games in English football and hasnt had too many glowing reports (my limited sightings of him have formed the opinion that he has a few tricks but lacks team ethics and seems to totally run out of steam long before the final whistle) but again theres hope. PARTCULARLY if we are hopefully going to be playing more "on the front foot" under our new manager.

Central midfield if going TO BE VITAL to this aim. Basically football is pretty simple. If these guys dont dominate then you dont tend to have the ball to do anything with.

Again to that end I hope Obiong hits the ground running and is of a good standard.

I dont see an awful lot of change for us at the back as a back 4 of Jenkinson (but I would like to see serious competion and a long term player identified for here) Ogbonna(?)/Reid/Tomkins and Cresswell will be of a decent standard and quite solid.

I think there are definately "shoots of encouragement".

Things (IMO) are also hinging very heavily on Sahko remaining fir AND hitting the heights he did in his purple spell last year as Maiga is not good enough,Carroll will again not feature in any meaningful way AGAIN this season and Valencia doesnt strike me "as a line leader" so a peice of business to try desperately to move Maiga and Nolan out to free wages and a purchase of anothe rtop class striker would be extremely beneficial especially probably to Payet!!!

I'd agree with most of that, Zarate clearly has a great touch but he looks too slow to play up top to me, if he could be kept motivated and fit I think he could play in behind either with or as cover for Payet. We really need another striker as we can't expect Payet to be the striker and provider and we need his creativity.

i said it a few weeks ago, i know your goin to say " corse you did burkie " ive been searching previous posts but cant find it , its very rarely i'll agree with dickys but on this i do , Song should be playing much further up the pitch, he's under too much pressure where he is now just in front of the back four , he hasn't got the agility required to play there if he makes a mistake thats it , kerplunk , as my dear and loyal friend ditm say's try him in the hole behind the front 2 , my opinion ?, he bag us a few goals into the bargain

Bilic likes this 4-2-3-1 system.
We have Obiang who is a defensive midfielder, Noble is suited to the role and Kouyate started there in Malta, can see two of those playing With Payet being joined by Song, maybe Valencia, quite a few options available as well as different set ups, also got Poyet for the holding role, just need an option up front
