Defensive Déjà Vu - Manchester United 2-1 West Ham

Submitted by Louis Nixon on Sun, 27/07/2025 - 02:20

It seems as if history is repeating itself again. If the club thought that Nayef Aguerd would revitalise our defence, then we seriously need to take a look at ourselves in the mirror.

The game kicked off, and within two minutes, we were already in trouble with Hojlund crashing the ball onto the outside of the post, and just a few minutes after that, the first horror show would take place with Areola dropping the ball and in an attempt to pick it up, he clipped Heaven and a blatant penalty was given. Unsurprisingly, Areola didn't save it and dived the wrong way, giving United the lead.

The remainder of the first half, we didn't do too much, a chance for Ward-Prowse and also a chance for Soucek should've seen us equalise, but it was saved from close range.

Amad Diallo doubled United's lead, but it was ruled out for offside, and that closed out the first half. You wouldn't have had to wait long for it to get worse as in the second half, Tomas Soucek and Areola had a 'communication' error, which gifted the opportunity for Manchester United to double their lead, which they ever so easily did.

Potter really struggled with the midfield again today, and creating chances was practically impossible. Guido Rodriguez and Ward-Prowse in the midfield is the recipe for disaster; we'll be in deep water drowning if it's what we head to Sunderland with.

Our moment of glory came through a longball pass from Tomas Soucek, who played it to Jarrod Bowen, and he'd convert the ball to the top-right corner, which saw the score be brought back to 2-1.

Substitutes did come after the goal, and for the last 25 minutes on the pitch, we were the utterly dominant side in the midfield and attack. Freddie Potts and Fearson revolutionised the midfield for the remaining 25 minutes, as well as Lucas Paqueta, who gave the squad a wave of fresh air as soon as he entered the pitch.

Don't be surprised if in our next fixture, Potter tries something completely different regarding the midfield. Potts provided control and Fearson ran around like a Duracell Bunny, a significant improvement on Ward-House and Guidslow Rodriguez and if the starting squad had been ever so slightly different, the result most likely would've been too.

The other bright sparks would be Malick Diouf and Wan-Bissaka, both of whom provided exactly what was needed for the team; it's just a shame that what was provided in front of them wasn't able to help in the slightest.

Positives, negatives and ups n' downs... it's one thing to make a mistake, it's another to learn from it.

Man Utd were poor against Leeds in their previous fixture. But here they looked like they were going to score in the double digits in the first half. The youngsters really brought some energy to the midfield and the best chances fell for Guilherme as well as Bowen who should have levelled the scores. What a howler of an outing for the likes of Areola who gifted two goals to Man Utd. Rodriguez was awful. Potter needs to drop him, as he gave away the free kick outside the box that resulted in Areola's stupidly giving away that penalty. Have to beat Everton in the next fixture, who were really trashed by Bournemouth. Otherwise it will be the bottom of that table and an embarrassment!!

Getting beaten is not a bad thing as it highlights the glaring inadequacies that we fans already new about hopefully Potter did to but it does not make much difference if no money is going to be made available to help.

We all no nips is Bambi on ice and cannot be the GK Potter wants Kilman Todibo Aguered for me is laughable and we all no the midfield problems ffs how even in a friendly do you start with Rodriguez JWP Soucek in the middle....Soucek from the bench yes the other two you just shake your head in disbelief...and again our attack suffers because of it.

So Potter in the next match win or lose it i do not expect to see that midfield play any part it does not work it will never work i would rather have those with a bit of energy about them playing than those carthorses.

But all it does is confirm that we are in for a long hard season(Winters coming)and 100% relegation dog fight

Definitely worrying times ahead if that's the best we got going into the season.
It took less than a minute to see playing with a 3 we have no pace whatsoever. I've tried to remain positive regarding Areola but yesterday proved to me he is on a par with McKnightmare. I would not be so harsh on the first goal as rhe drop occurred as he caught it and collided with Diouf. But the attempted recovery. School boy stuff. The 2nd was a carbon copy of the goal we conceded to Forest recently.
Midfield is shocking. JWP and Rodriguez need outing ASAP. Soucek does offer something. Not a lot. But something. With AWB and Diouf out wide I thought Fullkrug would be a threat but there seemed to be a reluctance to get the ball over.
On the whole. An expected showing. To take a positive. It was highlighted to the Midget, Potter and all conceded how bad we actually are & what is needed.
Time to dig deep little man.

West ham have to find another goal keeper I saw him make another bad decision and give away a penalty he did this last season with 2 mix ups with Cresswell and with killman Mavrapanos and his distribution last night right down the middle of the pitch you don't do things like that in that situation schoolboy stuff but not school boy wages of 150grand a week if he stays hope the 2 new coaches get him sorted out because last nights Howlers against Man ure cost us the game don't ever give him the number 1 shirt he don't deserve it

And i think we may be looking at two keepers now...Cooper at the blunts for around £15million and the guy from Leicester but apparently he has an ongoing Groin injury so that is a worry plus for me he punches more than catches and for me a Keeper needs to be good in the air and can catch a ball....ahh the days of Parkes bring back fond memories.

Thought that although we lost last night there was the youth players last night Preston Fearon looked really useful And so did Potts, Scarles,Gulerme and when they came on they were all busting a gut to show Potts what they can do pretty hopeful of what the academy players and how they are developing

I would think that it is wise to push someone like Wan-Bissaka into a midfield position. He would add pace to that rather poor and sluggish position with the current midfielders. Walker-Peters can then replace WB in that right back position. This is only a suggestion unless West Ham can concoct some young and talented midfielders in the transfer market.
