Irons Hold Their Own - West Ham 3-1 Sunderland

Submitted by Louis Nixon on Sat, 24/01/2026 - 15:38

Nuno’s side certainly don’t like making it easy for themselves, a dominant first half performance and the best one Hammers have seen in a while, Nuno’s side were nothing short of excellent, hard to pick out a negative!

Nuno’s attacking play since QPR has improved dramatically. We’ve gone all guns blazing, in which Taty and Pablo have added a significant amount of energy to this side, the Hammers have gone from having three shots per game to getting three goals, a significant improvement.

Despite Summerville’s excellence and Bowen’s precision from the penalty, Matheus Fernandes’ strike was one for the ages, a magnificent strike from 30 yards out dispatched into the top corner, one which even managed to get the entire of the London Stadium in shock.

As anticipated, after such a fairytale first half, Nuno’s side decided to shut up shop but managed to do it with miles more precision than previous efforts. His side reduced the number of bodies forward and held Sunderland to the midfield. A moment of lapse saw the Black Cats nick a goal, but the Hammers held their own, stood on two feet and wouldn’t concede again.

From the lineup to the starting squad, it was positive. Nuno made the right calls at the right time, which also helped the Hammers, but the relentless pressure at the beginning ultimately summoned Sunderland’s grave. It was identical to the Spurs’ first-half performance, but this time the Hammers were more clinical, which proved to be the difference.

Summerville is playing with more confidence, Bowen appears to be gelling with Taty, and Fernandes has found himself being a Duracell Bunny who can pick up the pieces when a problem arises, something West Ham have been crying out to have for years.

Three goals, three points and more positives than negatives, you certainly can’t complain, it’s the first time West Ham have won three competitive matches in a row since November 30th 2023… that sums it all up. - LN

The club remain in the relegation zone, but the gap has now closed to two points with Forest yet to play. Regardless of their result on Sunday, there are two handfuls of positives we can take from ours.

its started folks and singing the above was reminiscent of those wonderful days of Tevez coming to the rescue. For Tevez should we now read Paco Jemez? I think this guy is having a positive effect on NES and clearly the team.

Lets face it, its not rocket science playing two (sort of) up front. It works as much for goal scoring as it does for defense allowing midfield and defenders more options to find a get out when under pressure. This was the notable difference in the second half were release of the pressure becomes more difficult.

I'm not going to mention any negatives, every player played their part, some were just outstanding, Fernandes & Bowen but top of the shop has to be Jimmy, this lad can be just unplayable!

Also a big shout out for the crowd, the atmosphere was great, got behind the team but that said... They had something to get excited about!!

Chelsea will be a big step up but who knows.. Onwards and KTF!!!

And i cannot believe the nonsense being spouted about Pablo ffs he has just arrived he's a kid still in a mans body but he works his socks off more than can ever be said for a petulant i'll throw myself on the floor Brazilian.

He and Taty occupy the other team so they cannot concentrate on shutting Bowen down and the way we were spraying the ball from left to right showed just that so give me a few more players like that who are about the TEAM and not themselves please.

Pablo and Taty hold the ball up and give Bowen and Jimmy the opportunity to find space and play... not rocket science! Simples!!! :o)

with the outcome v Sunderland, I have noticed how well we played in the first half in our last two matches, we could easily have been 3 up v Spuds by H/T and could easily been another goal up v Sunderland. I do think that having a new coach on board has helped plus the two new lads up top which creates room for Bowen and Summerville. Soucek in the middle with Fernandes acting as minder allows Frenades to create (and his range of passing is something else. But what has really impressed me is the CB pairing of Mavropanos and Todibo who have not been without their critics, they have a good understanding and is becoming more formidable game by game. The confidence has grown and so has the confidence of Ollie Scarles! Every aspect of his game has improved. What is pleasing is forwards willing to track back and we have all been calling for someone to put their laces through the ball when in sight of goal and Fernandes with aplomb duly obliged. Recently two very good performances and two very deserved wins!

Im actually starting to think this Nuno fella is going to get us out of this,he is now starting to see his best team,Fernandes controling centre midfield will only get better,if we can turn chelsea over, its a big ask but who knows, and why not.

We need to focus on our results. Other clubs could get sucked in to the battle. I just fear its all too late, big ask in terms of number of wins. I think it could be again a high points bar to get over this season, could be another 40 pointer... I hope I'm wrong

Predict we are going down with 35 points, which in the past kept you up!

We will look back on that series of MUST WIN games which we messed up :o(

I reckon on us getting another thirteen points and even then I'm being a little bit optimistic with a couple of them. And I reckon Forest could get fifteen quite easily , I certainly didn't expect them to turn Brentford over.
We is going down.
