A way must be found to stop the clubs with almost infinite amounts of cash from simply buying up all the best players. I watched Man City v West Brom yesterday, and the gulf in class was ridiculous. Admittedly the Baggies had a man sent off early, but it was like watching a practice game: defenders against attackers. West Brom, literally, barely even got out of their own half, and had one chance in the whole game, City had 26 chances in the first half alone!
Refereeing decision are getting ridiculous. We all witnessed the abysmal performance of the ref in our match yesterday but other matches had the same ridiculous decisions. In particular the Palace game where Palace were given a penalty even though the keeper didn't foul the attacker who should have been booked for high feet anyway.
This was the answer to the goal scoring problem Westham were experiencing last season, the appointment of Teddy Sheringham to work with the forwards.A top striker who has played at the highest level and who knows a thing or two about scoring. This was Sullivan's comments on the appointment:
West Ham co-chairman David Sullivan insists Teddy Sheringham's arrival as attacking coach does not undermine the position of manager Sam Allardyce - but admits the club must target a top-six finish.
The Irons' board backed Allardyce following showdown talks in the summer sparked by a campaign which ended in 13th place, but only after a late pull clear of the relegation scrap.
Sullivan believes 48-year-old former England international Sheringham, who enjoyed a three-season spell as a player at Upton Park, can bring a cutting edge to the team and work well alongside the manager, who sustained a third campaign in the Barclays Premier League following promotion via the 2012 play-off final.
"Yes, we suggested the idea, but Sam liked it. We didn't undermine him at all," Sullivan said in the Daily Mirror.
"We had a lot of people approach us to become our attacking coach and Sam picked the one he wanted.
"I think he has analysed the performance of the team last year and agreed that we would like to score more goals. It was a weakness of the team and he has brought in an expert to try and improve that.
At present Westham are the 8th highest scorers in the league with 40 goals..Of that number 29 goals were scored in 17 games before Christmas, but only 11 goals in 13 games since then.Over that same period Westham conceded 18 goals in 17 games and 19 goals in 11 games. It was looking very bright up until Christmas, Westham were playing some of the best football fans have watched in a long ,long time and then it all starts falling apart, the results ,the performances apart from a few exceptions, and the slide down the table. So what has gone wrong ?
I knew I'd seen the name Lee Mason in the headlines before ! He made a horrendous decision in sending off Gabriel Agbonlahor, which was immediately overturned, and he's one of 4 referees who have been said should be axed by former top class referee Keith Hackett as not fit for purpose.
Just thinking that next season the chances are we will have Maiga back. Now i'm not his biggest fan and if a decent bid comes in I think we should let him go, but does anybody reckon we should give him a 2nd chance next season and give him a chance to work with sheringham? Because its clear that he has some ability but has often been mis used and low on confidence. My biggest problem was his work ethic but could Maiga come good under sheringham and the diamond tactic we now employ?
Ive posted this to death that i neither like or dislike sam & that im in the be carefull what you wish for camp. But is it me & has the position of being in 4th spot earlier in the season for a while gone to our heads a bit?Dont get me wrong, i was there in the old chicken run screaming at the top of the my voice "Barcelona we,re coming for you"!But as a fan of 45 years & entering my 50th year, like every other hammers fan this was sung with just a slight hint of cynicism!Yes its great that we held 4th spot with our fantastic signings but i think we all knew it wouldnt last!ok the football aint pretty at times but like darren says we have our best squad probably ever in the prem.We dug out a victory today (& apart from scandalous refereeing) it could have been more...With or without sam the future is bright,(sakho, valencia, cresswell, kouyate, jenkinson if he signs! to name a few)one more season in the Boleyn (what a wrench its going to be to say goodbye to the old girl!) then we will be in the olympic stadium...more investment will produce more funds to buy even better players..i for one am looking to the future & am a very happy hammer...
we gained 40 points last term we have 42 so far this term , we lost 20 games last term (if we lost all our remaining matches we can lose a maximum of 18 games) we scored 40 goals in 38 last season and have 40 in 30 this time around.
safe to say we have made some progress.
We were not great but did enough, 3 points and a clean sheet, Sakho back on target! I don't think there was any chance Sunderland were going to be rolled over like last week v Villa (in fact by all accounts Villa were not great v Swansea today) I think with respect to both sides it was more fear of losing that made the match pretty dire to watch and Defoe pulled our defence all ways. Collins showed a lot of courage and made some timely interventions. Lee Mason I felt gave a lot of 50/50 decisions The Black Cats way and in my opinion we should have had one penalty (possibly two) but refs don't seem to give us many breaks at all do they? But the big thing is it is a much needed morale booster especially with the current crop of injuries. We certainly missed Valencia today who I feel would have stretched Sunderlands defence.
But a win is a win and as I put earlier a clean sheet as well. Now 9th in the table with 42pts and 17 clear of 3rd bottom I am certainly a lot happier today than I have been for a few weekends now but at the start of the season if you had offered 9th after 30 games, 42 points yep damn right I'd have taken it. IMO we can only get better!
