Another One Gone Too Soon

Glenn Roeder sadly passed away today at the terribly young age of 65, he had been 'medically troubled' ever since having the need for surgery to deal with a brain tumour while he was the manager of West Ham. He returned to the dug out seven months later and endured torrid abuse from the supporters of some visiting fans, and unfortunately from some home fans as well, they know who they are!

Roeder led West Ham to a seventh place finish in his first term as manager, and should probably taken a bit more time off after his initial illness, but he was determined to return to what he loved, football. Some Hammers fans nicknamed him Glen Rodent, due to his fine dental attributes, but all recognised that he was a fighter.

Our condolences go out to his family, loved ones and friends, Glenn Roeder 1956-2021 R.I.P

From home fans, never mind visiting fans. Sad, but my overriding memory of Glen is the picture of a dignified man on the touchline with a purple faced "supporter" spewing absolute venom from the stands. RIP Glen Roeder

Agree Deluded got us to a top 7 finish,a really decent family man & some of the abuse aimed at him from our own support was unreal.... i remember being in the stands hearing it & its one of the very few moments I was actually ashamed of some of our lot

Well, I was actually going to mention from the home fans, but preferred others to confirm that which I already knew, and was ashamed of as a West Ham fan

Old School, True Gentleman. My First memories of Glenn was from my QPR supporting mate, who used to tell me about him being a rock of a centre-half for QPR, as well as his out of the blue charges up the field, complete with his step-overs.
He was disrespect by a few, but for the many, he will be remembered as a good man, with a good heart and with good values. R.I.P Glenn Roeder... my thoughts are also with his family at this time also.

An innovator as a centre half, first central defender I ever saw do the stepover in nearly every game he played that I watched on MOTD. A cultured man if ever there was one RIP..

very sad and taken far too early! Always came across as a lovely man. May he rest in peace.

Never really accepted by WH fans, was third choice after Twitcher was found out.

I think the reason for WH fans not liking him was he had a great squad and still managed to get relegated..David James,Tomáš Řepka, Nigel Winterburn, Lee Bowyer, Michael Carrick, Trevor Sinclair, Judas Defoe, Lomas, Kanouté, Les Ferdinand, Glen Johnson, Joe Cole etc etc and one of my favs Sébastien Schemmel. The season before we came 7th!

Point is though that he had a brain tumour when we got relegated, he should never have been allowed to return to the dug out in his condition.

Very good point and in essence should have been "off sick" but naturally Brown couldnt see that. If he wasnt fit for work he shouldnt have been there. Given the lovely man is dead it makes me sound heartless and thats not the case. The money grabbing Clowns that were running the circus at that time chose to look the other way. Maybe it was the fault of the "Back room" team at the time not stepping up? History shows, and even Sir Alex Ferguson said at the time, it was a travesty that a club is relegated with such talent.

Touching tribute, it is fair to note only Slav thus far has equalled his top 7 place since. He had problems when he took over, Harry squandered all the cash from the sale of Rio, Glenn had no money to strengthen, Paolo took the huff and went to Italy for a bit and Trevor Sinclair practically downed tools if I remember correctly. Brown did the dirty on him and I felt ashamed of his treatment after 3 games and Brown having offloaded Cole, Kanoute, Sinclair and Johnson! You are right he was dignified and took it on the chin. 65 is no age to leave this world. I wonder what those fans are thinking now?

Incredible to think that the 7th place finished we attained under him has not been bettered since. A lot of money, owners, players and managers have come and gone since then. RIP Glenn
