A Third Choice Or A Future Message?

Submitted by Louis Nixon on Thu, 11/09/2025 - 09:15

Lukasz Fabianski has officially returned to West Ham United on a one-year deal. The Polish international would re-sign for West Ham after Wes Foderingham would be sold to Aris Limassol on a permanent transfer, and subsequently, the Hammers decided that a 'third' choice keeper was needed, in which Fabianski would be a perfect fit.

It was believed by many that Fabianski should've had his contract extended when it came to making decisions of who should and shouldn't be, but in a change of events, he didn't re-sign. There were numerous beliefs that he would make a return to Poland, but even having the opportunity to move, the deal wasn't finalised with any option, and it seems he was delighted at the thought of returning to the Hammers and staying in England.

Fabianski's contract with West Ham last season saw him being paid £65,000 per week, and with West Ham's wage bill decreasing by a significant amount, it is expected that Super Fab is on around £40,000 per week now.

The biggest point of question comes with the question of whether Fabo is really a third-choice keeper? He is on a one-year deal, which would indicate where his stand and future lie's, however, Areola has been heavily linked with a move away from West Ham and perhaps signing Fabianski provides us an opportunity to sell Areola in the January window, rather than waiting for the Summer for his eventual move away.

West Ham's eagerness to sell Areola stems from his current contract costing the club £120,000 per week, with him being one of the highest earners at the club and considering Hermansen is on £30,000 per week, that truly provides a picture and one that the owners won't want to have painted.

As everyone knows we are only in one cup competition now. So I expect Areola to start in that one. That isn't until January though and that window will be open in any case. So maybe Areola will leave?

So unless we sustain injuries to Mad Herman Munster or The Fonz, I don't see Fab playing. Sure he knows that too. However I do think his chance will come this season at some point. I'm sure he's just happy to be around the place. Training with his mates again. A place on the bench would be nice also. Not to mention the wealth of experience he possesses for the Madman to learn from...

Poland was ever an option for Fabianski, his desire was to stay in London and not uproot his family, particularly his son at his school. This is evident by his refusal to consider many of the options put to him, the only one holding any substance being from Charlton Athletic, who ditched out at the last moment.
This new "signing" doesn't reflect well on Potter (what does?), and it will be interesting the way the other two clowns behave in goal and remain between the sticks before Potter realises that basically, he ditched the real number one goalkeeper.
We've been blessed with some really good keepers at West Ham, Ferguson, Parkes, Ludo, Shaka Hislop, Bernard Lama, Greenie, Jussi Jääskeläinen and Fabs name will be fondly remembered amongst them, unlike Areola who ranks alongside the Robertos, Joe Hart and McKnight.
The jury is still out on the Mad man but it's not looking very good right now.

He wasn't called Calamity for nothing. I deliberately left him out, a complete buffoon but not quite up to the Roberto standards

Striker, CB, legs in midfield and a keeper were all priorities of the window and Herman Monsters record should have been enough to see the bloke is not capable... classic Sullivan / Potter cock up!

Personally i think it is so plain to see that Fabianski is still the number one keeper for us,in my opinion,Areola is lazy he dosent react quick enough, and at times seems to watch the ball enter the net, when he could of made an attempt,as for the Mad Munster Mash,he seems a calamity diving and falling all over the place but not achieving much.

I was always Mervyn day when I went over the park with my mates to play football. I was around 12 when he burst onto the scene, He made saves I'd never seen before. Was brilliant. He didn't even wear any gloves. Legend for me at that age!!
