Bogey Brighton Hurt Hammers - Brighton 1-1 West Ham

Submitted by Louis Nixon on Sun, 07/12/2025 - 16:20

A good all-round performance, numerous chances throughout the game and once again the feeling of two lost points linger in the minds as the Hammers remain in the relegation zone and are two points adrift from safety.

It’s a brutal blow and a hurtful one to watch. Across the 90 minutes, Summerville had a plethora of chances and, unfortunately, couldn’t finish his dinner. Numerous opportunities to take the lead early on, and the biggest blunder was the one-on-one miss in the first half, with the second blunder coming through an acrobatic effort that should’ve been converted.

A bizarre line-up as well as a wacky gameplan, but the side, which was rotated due to fatigue worries, managed to pull through, and at the beginning of the day, similar to Bournemouth, you would’ve snapped your arm off for a draw but the result feels a robbery after VAR controversy costs Nuno’s side two vital points.

Two incidents for the goal make you question whether the overhead kick was safe and wouldn’t be classed as a high foot for Mavropanos, as well as the bigger one being the handball and the ambiguity around it, what is and isn’t a handball, because each situation varies and we’ve seen those given and disallowed countless amounts of times.

The other discussion of if Marvo goes to ground, 99% it would’ve been given as a foul, which just goes to show how windy these rules are given that a gust of chance can decide a match, one simple action and it all comes down to play acting and honesty.

This conversation regarding the goal could’ve all been avoided if chances had been finished, but Bowen’s moment of brilliance proved to not be enough, and Nuno might have to reevaluate the decision to shut up shop so soon once again, given that West Ham seem to concede more whilst shutting up shop in comparison to when they don’t! The irony!

One loss in six would’ve been something any Hammers fans would’ve accepted upon Nuno’s arrival, and it does demonstrate how much he’s managed to turn the corner, given Potter had the same tools to build the shed that Nuno has and he instead built a kennel. But somehow one loss in six still isn’t anywhere near enough due to the damage that had already been done.

Given the next two being Aston Villa and Manchester City, it becomes a distant struggle to imagine how West Ham could be out of the relegation zone come Christmas.

Team selection but it worked. We deserved to win just didn't get the luck.

Great save from areola to stop the own goal.

As i have already mentioned has cost us 4 points now on south coast...Fernandes man of the match but subbing him and Paqueta for Soucek and Magassa gave them the time and space in the middle of the park they had not had all game and it cost us....Will he learn i doubt it.

But like many seeing that line up at the start we would of been grateful for the point Yet come away as if we had just lost.

The difference between nuno side n potters is stark. His team works and runs potters gave up. So to me those are 2 points gained

Ordinarily it wouldn’t matter if we dropped 2 points and we were impressive up to the last 15 minutes as soon as nes started shutting up shop and sitting on the 1-0 that’s when our problem started he should have left it after Wilson came on it felt like the 3 points were ours but the nearer we got to the end you knew Brighton were going to score and with Villa and Citeh coming up we really needed that win.Thats twice Nes has found out that he has to be braver and trust in his team what’s the saying if it ain’t broke don’t fixit now we are looking over our shoulder till January

That's two games now where Nuno has bottled it when we were on top. Silly substitutions which put us on the back foot and under the cosh. We lost EVERYTHING in midfield in the last five minutes, Gulls pumping balls in for fun. Yeah we can whine about the handball but we shot ourselves in the foot by allowing it to happen

So taking Rodriguez off for potts made us lose everything in midfield?

Putting Soucek and Magassa on and getting them to defend deep killed us in the middle of the park and where as Brighton had not space there before suddenly they had five yards sometimes ten of space and could get there heads up and play passes that just were not happening before...Fernandes was the man of the match and should of been kept on and Paqueta for once was just playing the game with no histrionics just focused on the task which gave them huge problems.

The goal shouldn't of counted. Hindsight is wonderful but Brighton no mugs in last 15 mins they'd have pushed on more.

But we lost our attacking option with no link to Bowen and Wilson.....as for hindsight i think a lot of us had foresight and new it would happen...but hey your opinion is as valid as any ones lets hope he now plays the game we did against the barcodes against Villa on Sunday

That's the way he's operated successfully at wolves and forest. Can't expect him to change because it looks obvious to us in our armchairs

Fernandez was a duracell bunny and Paqueta was a threat and they kept the midfield not only as a shield to the defence but a threat to the Brighton defence. All of that disappeared almost instantly on those subs. The third one, Mayers for Diouff had to happen, he was not having a good game, hasn't been good for some time now. I don't think he will be missed when he goes off to AFCON as long as Scarles is back to full fitness.
The Nuno style is beginning to show with the team now, All we need him to do now is stop bricking it every time we score a goal and have a point or three on board in the last ten minutes.

That’s what made the difference as far as I was concerned he was my man of the match Rodriguez we will not miss in Jan and I was surprised he started

Can't believe that Magassa and Potts were so knackered after Thursdays game the little darlings needed a rest. Good job they weren't playing in the 60's when moderately successful teams played 50 odd games a season was the norm

Fernandes has had two outstanding back to back games. Rodrigues should not have started but whatever the plan was seemed to work. Too many unrequired substitutions from Nuno is becoming a pattern.

Whatever way you look at it, It's a valuable point regardless. Blatant handball for the build up to the goal. But what is done is done. Todibo and Areola are now performing to a high standard with some consistency it seems...

agree with the summary.

I also question the substitutions of NES, its not the first time he has tried to close the game out without success.

I think he is a pragmatist in the Moyes mode. Lets not expect pretty football particularly after the next window, we can expect a flood of defensive players on their way!
