Ten Man West Ham Edge Victory Over Burton

Submitted by Louis Nixon on Sat, 14/02/2026 - 15:09

Hammers embarked on a thrilling 90 minutes, which consisted of two penalty calls, one for each side, as well as a demonstration of how poor the Hammers can be without the introduction of key players.

Callum Wilson appeared to be struggling up top alone only managing a handful of touches with the best opportunity of the 90 coming through Mavropanos with a headed effort from the corner, but the keeper comfortably saved.

Some might be quick to mention the handball from the Burton player, but in all honesty, they could’ve easily had a penalty as well by Mavro’s calamity of a barge, which VAR would’ve likely given in the Premier League.

That being said, it was one of the most doom and gloom first halves West Ham have seen since the Wimbledon loss. An obysmal game and due to the lack of chances, extra time is what occurred.

Introductions of Summerville and Taty proved to be divident as the Dutchman blasted the ball in through a curved effort. But as the elation of the goal came around, it would be numbed after Freddie Potts was sent off for a challenge; upon review, it looks a lot worse than initially thought. There are no studs that make contact with the player and Mr Referee initially had out a yellow before being convinced by the Burton boys that it was a red. A very dodgy decision.

The red card triggered the introduction of Orford and Dissasi, and fortunately, the pair were able to see out the game.

A dismal performance from the Hammers and Nuno’s side but still success into Round Five, the last 16. In honesty, individuals are what have kept the Hammers in the cup rather than a team effort.

He had a poor performance in the first half, but in the second half, Magassa seemed to be everywhere he was required, the Suvlaki centre-half eked the ball away once required and of course, Summerville and Taty ultimately won us the game.

West Ham don’t like to make it easier for themselves, do they? But all eyes now faced on the FA Cup draw which is set to take place on Monday night. - LN

Losing to Burton would have had the media and social media in uproar. Unfortunately puts us into another round of a game we could well do without. Forced into bringing in first team regulars who could have been injured for more important games but now have the loss of, ok, not a regular, but an important bench player in Potts for three games. With or wafer thin squad, we really don't need the FA Cup this year

This is nonsense. There's no reason why we can't manage to play in league and cup ffs. I agree with Stuart Pearce, it's a made up nonsense that we all supposed to believe in that players are so precious they can't manage two games a week. Like ffs

Because I don't recall mentioning anything about playing two games in a week. In fact, if the cup wasn't an issue yesterday I'm pretty sure we'd have been playing this weekend anyway

The funny thing is. Making hard work of games like these, before you know it, you're in the last 4. Just saying......

Was Nunos decision to take Lamadrid off and bring Potts on...Now i am not saying the player was doing well but i think we all saw the evidence with our own eyes that the players were to a man not really up for it yesterday and nerves showed except for Mav....but to bring on Potts a defensive midfielder when Kante and Magassa were already on the pitch to me seemed a strange decision indeed.

I am pleading with the club if we stay up not to enter any cup competitions for the sake of the health of the players and supporters would welcome the boost it gives to the wallet as no silly expensive away trips in meaningless competitons!

In my opinion are for the European games nowadays. Even the Champions League has been devalued to worthless nowadays, how many of the entrants are actual champions? Nine teams from the Premier League are/were involved in Europe this season, some playing against unheard of teams that you'd expect a bunch of schoolgirls to beat and to allow for these fixtures our domestic cups have taken a back seat.
I find this quite sad, especially the FA Cup at one time, the most glamorous cup competition in the WORLD. Just look at that team we fielded yesterday. That would never have happened int he 60's or 70's and for the little clubs, a chance for their supporters to see top stars of the day. Replays have been done away with for the lottery of penalties and even the actual Final no longer has the allure of those early days. Sky money and the Premier League have a lot to answer for, for what in my eyes is a slow demise of football today

Think that the Burton players and the crowd had a big influence on the referee and he was originally going to give Potts a yellow card and when he got crowded out in the end he had walk the walk. I think WHU will appeal this decision, The home crowd did a brilliant job and we would probably would have done no different in their position I lost count of the amount of penaltys and yellow card appeals the Burton Crowd had but I found this game really frustrating with all the backwards and sideways passing and as soon as the team was announced I thought where are the goals coming from? and it took a class player to wrap it up and I get it Nuno doesnt want any of his key players getting injured, that is the trouble with being in the hat for the next round I will love to get a home draw but frit scared if any of the players get injured, but i suppose its the same with all the teams threatened with relegation But the Squad is so light it looks like we've lost Pablo to the end of the season with an ACL injury. That little dwarf should put his hand in his pocket for a free agent - will it happen -will it Fcuk B&S out
