Pelle Gets 'First Of The Few' As Nasri Signs Short Term Deal

Having already worked with Samir Nasri it really was a no brainer for Hammers boss Manuel Pellegrini to sanction a short term loan deal for Samir Nasri, once the Frenchman had proved his fitness following a long suspension for inadvertently having broken FIFA doping laws. Here is what Pellegrini said “I am very pleased to welcome Samir to West Ham United, he is a player I obviously know well from our time together at Manchester City and I am happy to be working with him again. He has been working very hard here in recent weeks to build up his fitness and condition after a long period without playing, and he is now very determined to return to his best."

He continued, “Samir will give us another dimension in our attacking play, he is a very technical player, with excellent quality on the ball, and the ability to create big moments in important matches. He already has very good experience of the Premier League and we hope that he will have a positive impact on the team between now and the end of the season.” After making his debut for Marseille’s reserve team at 16, the teenager made his senior debut in a Ligue 1 meeting with Sochaux in September 2004, aged 17 years and three months, the following year, he won the UEFA Intertoto Cup. Here is what Nasri had to say on signing, “Coming back to the most competitive league in the world, with a team full of ambition with a manager that I know…. it’s the best job in the world, and I’m really excited about it.” Nasri was given his lengthy doping ban for using an intravenous drip treatment and has been without a club since January 31st after leaving Turkish side Antalyaspor.

Nasri made 166 appearances at the Stade Velodrome, including 28 in European competition and was voted UNFP Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year in 2007. He was then brought to England Arsenal in July 2008 and in three seasons he scored 27 goals and registered 16 assists in 126 games, he was also named in the Premier League Team of the Year in 2011. Manchester City swooped for him in August 2011 and he marked his first season at the Etihad Stadium by scoring a number of vital goals as they won their first Premier League title. Nasri remained a pivotal figure following Manuel Pellegrini’s arrival in 2013, adding a second Premier League winner’s medal and producing a Man of the Match performance as City won the EFL Cup in 2014.

Nasri has been capped 41 times by his country, scoring five goals and appearing at the 2008 and 2012 UEFA European Championship finals. As a youngster he scored the winning goal as Les Bleus won the UEFA European U17 Championship title in 2004. It is to be hoped that he can hit the ground running as Hammers are in the middle of their worst ever injury crisis, bargains are rarely had during the January transfer window, but Nasri's transfer is unique in that he could not play before the 1st of January 2019 because of his doping ban but was able to train with the rest of the squad in order to regain his fitness.

Nasri represents a good bit of business with minimum risk, it is believed the club have first option to sign him should things work out the way Manuel Pellegrini has planned. Now all he has to do is get Victor Moses in as a right back! - Ed

A Game Too Far As Hammers Lose 2-0 To Burnley

Having survived on a wing and a prayer through most of the Christmas period, Hammers finally played the 'Game too far' against a resolute and determined Burnley side. Despite the return of Marko Arnoutovic, Hammers were without essentially nine men, and that imbalance finally came home to roost. Unfortunately there are only a few days to go before the next demand on the wafer thin squad.

Burnley boss Sean Dyche made five changes to his side, including a recall for goalkeeper Tom Heaton in place of Joe Hart, Chris Wood put them ahead with a right footed shot from the left of the penalty area. McNeil then added to the home side's advantage by turning in Westwood's cross at the far post.

A header from substitute Andy Carroll, drew a fine save from Heaton late on, but Hammers were not at the races today with the only thing to show from the game being a plethora of yellow cards, the games to players available ratio finally made this game a game too far! - Ed

The Heat Is On As Hammers Wait For Zaba And The General

The Christmas and New Year period is one that managers both look forward to and dread at the same time, one the one hand a few good results can see a team fly up the table, however the sheer number of games that have to be played can have a catastrophic effect depending on the amount of injuries accrued. In Hammers case the 'injuries accrued' column makes very stressful reading, Manuel Pellegrini has had to deal with an ever increasing injury list that reads like a who's who of footballing talent, the list is so long that even players of the calibre of Winston Reid have disappeared in to the ether!

The last minute withdrawal of Pablo Zabaleta from the squad ahead of the Southampton game left many in fear as to the outcome, in the event Antonio deputised well, but against what will be a very determined Burnley side a player of Zabaleta's experience will be a big miss, hopefully he will be declared fit. The other 'missing link' is the General, Fabian Balbuena, although the team coped without him it was apparent that Diop looked far more exposed when having to deal with all the aerial stuff in the Box.

The trip to Burnley represents an opportunity for West Ham to win six out of seven of their games in December, something the club has never before achieved, unfortunately they will face a 'wounded animal' in the form of Sean Dyche's team, the home side will be determined to make amends for their previous heavy defeats and Joe Hart will be equally as determined to 'play a blinder' between the sticks.

There is no point in uploading the potential team that Manuel Pellegrini is going to select as yet, that will depend on the medical team and on Pelle's instinct. - Ed

I got right cheesed off ,every Saturday with them winning so just before last weekend when they went second I noticed they were still 16/1 so I had a score on them ,well that seems to have done the trick watched them this afternoon against Wolves ,the transformation was something to behold ,don't think they had a shot on target in the second half ,they were as flat as a pancake ,so if me having a cut on them means they go downhill then it's bloody money well spent .

seventh heaven?

Chelsea's Pain Is Hammers Gain

'The one that got away', was one of those fifties Brit movies made when the charcoals of the Empire were still smouldering, it is a true film about the only German pilot who had been incarcerated in Britain during the war ever to escape. Against all odds he eventually got back to Germany, facing extreme odds is the lot of a young footballer these days, huge wealth and fame beckon, but a whole career is only one injury or club rejection away from disaster. With regards to 'letting' young players go, there is a lot more involved tham saying thank you son, you'll find a club. Declan Rice was the recipient of the 'fancy a quiet chat' moment when he was on the books of Chelsea football club, they didn't reckon he'd make the grade and so released him.

Fortunately Rice ended up at West Ham and the rest as they say is history, having already completed 50 games by the age of nineteen people have inevitably begun to draw comparisons between Rice and the late and great 'Sir' Bobby Moore. Of course he is a differnent type of player, but the perception he shows is far advanced for his years, just like Bobby. Rice can go on to be the captain of both club and, whichever one he chooses, country, he is a ready made leader and you can guarantee that Chelsea will be kicking themselves for letting him slip through their net.

It's about time Hammers 'nicked' some talent, as opposed to always being the recipients of smash and grab raids from wealthier clubs looking to exploit the club's dodgy finances, and there are more in the pipeline. Manuel Pellegrini is already a 'disciple of youth', and the money saved by signing Declan Rice in the current climate more than pays for Felipe Anderson's transfer fee! - Ed

Belated Christmas Present Arrives As Rice Signs On Long Term

Waiting until after Christmas to get a bargain in the sales is a common place thing among adults with grown up children, after all it makes sense, why spend twice the amount of money just for the sake of a few days? West Ham were in the position of having one of the Premier Leagues brightest talent tied down to an apprentice contract which, if they had liked, could have been extended a further year. Fortunately sense prevailed and the club have moved to secure Declan Rice on a five year contract with the option of a further year and a half.

The fact that the deal has been completed just ahead of the January transfer window opening is indicative of the amount of interest the 'elite' clubs have been showing in the nineteen year old defender, the club could have let things run until the end of the season, but that would have risked Rice being 'tapped up' by other clubs not adverse to using the 'dark arts' when it comes to their transfer policy.

Signing Rice up on a long term deal sends out two mesages, one that West Ham is no longer a selling club, and more importantly that the academy is alive and well, young players with the talent will get a chance, the inertia will become apparent as time moves on, and once again West Ham will be a key destination for young talent.

The Academy was famed around the World for producing a production line of brilliant players, it may have been sleeping but now it is rising phoenix like from the ashes. - Ed
