ALERT: Irons Derby Against Gooners In Jeopardy

Hammers Wednesday evening's fixture against Arsenal at the Emirates is in serious jeopardy of being cancelled at the last minute as the host club deal with a potentially huge Covid -19 outbreak as the Omicron variant continues to ravage through all areas of football and the wider community.

The Gooners London Colney training ground currently resembles a Stalag Luft 17 movie set, with layers of protective cones directing players and staff to a 'secure area' where they are given Covid tests while STILL in their vehicles! Judging from afar and taking into consideration the comments emanating from the North London club, there appears to be more than a definite chance of the game being called off.

Would a postponement of the fixture benefit West Ham? In a way yes, and in another way no. It should be remembered that ALL rearranged fixtures HAVE to be played within a certain time frame, the situation being exasperated by the start of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in that most democratic of places Qatar!

The schedule that had been arranged for December was already ludicrous, but if additional scheduling is required on a wholesale scale, total chaos would ensue. IF games are rescheduled for after the New Year, there would be an obvious benefit for David Moyes and many other Premier League managers in that they would have had an open transfer window available to strengthen their squads, this opportunity would probably benefit West Ham more than many others due to the current injury list and the well known paucity of the squad.

Hammers players returned from the last International break low on energy and out of sorts, it is to be hope that IF there are a lot of games rescheduled, that the additional time provided will be used to allow players to re-charge their batteries and to acquire one or two of David Moyes' transfer targets.

The games and possible cancellations come thick and fast throughout December, so any 'joy' at gaining a few days respite will only be short term unless ALL fixtures are suspended until further medical analysis of the new strain of Covid is available.

Clubs simply CANNOT afford to NOT play their games they OWE the Broadcasters, so there is a very strong likelihood that games will be played behind closed doors in the very near future, if they are allowed to be played at all! Make no bones about it, this is a very, very serious situation which currently DOESN'T have a positive prognosis!

We will have updates uploaded as soon as they are available, fans from both Arsenal and West Ham deserve as much advance warning as possible IF the fame is going to be called off.- Ed

(Not) The worst VAR call EVER.....but..

Maybe if every appeal had to pass the Salah test - would he get the decision?
This question posed on KUMB gave me an idea to level things up.

How about the muppets at Stockley Park are actually blindfolded??? Now obviously this can't work, but what if all games were offered the same commentary/picture? That being that the game is played in Liverpool Red and Liverpool yellow and that every attacking play features Salah? Therefore every possible foul/handball is against Salah regardless if it's Antonio, Wood, Ward-Prowse or actually Salah. The pictures on the screen feature Salah's head super-imposed on the actual player and the muppets are not given ANY indication of what game they are actually "officiating" on.
Has to be worth a go, no?

Top Club Bias Still 'Var'acious!

Chances were few and far between during the 'dour drawer' between Burnley and West Ham, so perhaps it is forgivable for fans to try and salvage some form of positive from what was a very disappointing outing. The defence looked pretty solid despite being shorn of its two main players, but was bereft of effectively going forward due to the absence of Aaron Cresswell from the proceedings.

What was galling was the obvious deference applied to the VAR decision NOT to award what was a stone walled penalty for a blatant foul on Craig Dawson. VAR decided the referee was correct and that no further action was to be taken. (smackings of F1?)

David Moyes will feel furious that even softer Penalties were awarded to Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea, surprise surprise all of which are Hammers League top four rivals. It may seem like sour grapes, but it isn't just West Ham who have been afflicted by contentious penalty awards, they just always seem to be given in favour of the 'super six' teams who of course wanted to sell the Premier League down the river.

It is to be hoped that the arrival at the club of Daniel Kretinsky with his business nous will finally help Hammers be seen as an 'elite' club, a tag that is deserved given the enormous fan base the club has. VAR has been very good for highlighting obvious errors, the system is fine, it is just the useless 'organic matter' that often oversees its use is not always FIT FOR PURPOSE! - LN

No Room For Gloom As Gooners Loom

Sunday's 'offering' was well below par as Hammers struggled to break down a resolute Burnley defence in the totally uninspiring 0-0 draw up at Turf Moor, profligacy in front of goal didn't help matters as chance after chance was squandered. The hectic schedule ALL clubs are facing is having the effect many feared would happen, namely that the large clubs with huge squads would cope much better, so it has proved.

The lack lustre performance from Moyes' boys was simply as a result of playing too many games, in too short a period of time, the upshot being that chances that would have been tucked away last season are being missed by the narrowest of margins.

The need for additional fire power up front was starkly highlighted against Sean Dyche's relegation battlers, looking at the bench and seeing only Andriy Yarmolenko as a replacement striker was hardly going to strike fear in to Burnley's defenders, including Hammers transfer target James Tarkowski, was it?

Hopefully Aaron Cresswell will be passed as fit for the crucial away game against Arsenal this WEDNESDAY, as Michail Antonio is currently drifting to the left of the pitch to try and pick up lose balls in the absence of Cress's superb deliveries from the flank.

Missing out on the services of Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma has been 'massive' for the club, losing out on Cresswells crosses and set piece deliveries has just been a player missing too far! Only consolation for fans is that Cress is rumoured to be available on Wednesday and that Issa Diop has stepped into the void left by Ogbonna and Zouma. - Ed

Burnley Looms Large Injury Threat

Submitted by Louis Nixon on Sat, 11/12/2021 - 21:35

Hammers fans looking at the Premier League table should be wary of adding a further three points to the club's current tally of twenty seven as a matter of fact, Sunday's opponents Burnley are already embroiled in a relegation dog fight and will be looking to get themselves out of a hole by getting a positive result.

Speaking of 'positive results', Burnley's players will have benefited from NOT having played their game with Tottingham last week due to a Covid outbreak among Conti's players and staff, as well as NOT being involved in any other competition.

Aaron Cresswell is due to have a late fitness test, the result of which could have a massive impact on the game, already without Ogbonna and Zouma, Hammers simply cannot afford to operate without Cresswell's surging runs and pinpoint crosses.

Injuries were always going to be a factor as clubs negotiate the ludicrous December fixture lists, other clubs have suffered far more than West Ham, unfortunately the strength in depth is now being severely tested for David Moyes. With the transfer window still SEVEN games away, the squad will HAVE to be supplemented from within.

Tomorrow's line up will hopefully include Aaron Cresswell, one thing that is guaranteed is that there will be more than a sprinkling of U-23 players on the bench. Jamal Baptiste will definitely be included, as will Harrison Ashby. Burnley are going to be as tough as Sean Dyche's voice, so David Moyes will have to set a plan to soak up what will inevitably be a full blooded onslaught. LN

Moyes Not Fond Of Deep Seas!

Ever the thorough manager, David Moyes watched Brentford play Watford in last night's Premier League fixture that was dramatically won by the home team in the closing minutes of added time. The fact that there was in excess of five minutes of injury time was indicative of the way both sets of players approached the game!

Another one bites the dust

Players from BOTH sides were dropping like flies at the slightest contact to such an extent that it would not have been amiss for the Stadium DJ to have had Queen's 'Another one bites the dust' blasting out over the PA system. Hammers fans will be only too aware as to how Brentford go about their 'game management' or gamesmanship as it used to be called in old money!

Perhaps this should be Brentford's anthem?

Albinoni Adagio in g minor

You could argue that newly promoted teams are entitled to try every trick in the book in order to maintain their top flight status, last night's spectacle was interesting in that BOTH teams whined, bickered, fell down as if they had been hit by a sniper's bullet and were generally in the ear of the referee from the moment the game kicked off.

Moyes doesn't like Deep Seas

David Moyes is known to be a strict disciplinarian, part of his ethos is that players SHOULDN'T dive or waste time, it may be old school, but that's what he tries to instill in his players. Often one of the reasons it takes 'dithering Dave' so much time to integrate new players is that he has to 'remove' the diving element from newly acquired players' games.

So in the future when you see a West Ham player get up and dust himself down without rolling over three times followed by a pike, you will possibly appreciate why. It might be football, but not as WE know it, Deep Sea Divers? NO thank you! - ED

Moyes To Play Boys

nevillenixon's picture
Submitted by nevillenixon on Thu, 09/12/2021 - 16:29

Word reaching us from Hammers 'goose green' training ground is that David Moyes will make wholesale changes from the team that vanquished London rivals Chelsea at the weekend, that 3-2 victory came at considerable cost as both Ben Johnson and Kurt Zouma picked up bad injuries.

As tonight's UEFA Europa League Cup game is essentially a dead rubber, given that Hammers have already topped their Group and have automatically moved to the last 16 stage, there has been a clamour for David Moyes to select a team almost entirely comprising of youth players.

While it is wonderful to be in such a position, it should be remembered that the opposition topped their domestic league and are serial cup winners, in other words they most definitely will NOT be coming to play a supporting role for the Hammers Academy!

Moyes will be mindful of the damaging effect a heavy defeat could have on impressionable young players and will also want to avoid seeing his team embarrassed in front of 50,000 fans as well as a global TV audience. So he will seek to create a balance between experience and youth.

With the insane schedule meaning West Ham have to play a game every THREE days, selecting first team regulars is a no no, so who will be in the starting line up? Areola, Noble, Kral and Vlasic are nailed on to start the game from the senior player pool, however Yarmolenko might not start due to interest in signing him from TWO European clubs ahead of the transfer window's opening in just three weeks time.

Selecting an entirely new back line might seem risky, but Harrison Ashby at right back, Jamal Baptiste and Aji Alese as centre backs and Manny Longelo at left-back are well acquainted with each other and have played very successfully together for the U-23's already, despite their tender years.

If Moyes goes for his favoured 4-2-3-1 formation, the line up we have heard is going to be: Areola, Ashby, Baptiste, Alese, Longelo, Noble, Kral, Chesters, Yarmolenko*(or Okoflex), Vlasic, Perkins. David Moyes will probably name a relatively strong bench, including Saturday's unlikely goal hero Authur Masuaku.
Masuaku might well be joined on the bench by Ryan Fredericks as well as Said Benrahma, just in case the team looks as if it will be over run, others who could benefit from time on the pitch will no doubt be included. It is the beginning of Panto season, so it is to be hoped that Dinamo Zagreb don't play the wicked witch! -Ed
