Hammers Could Face Barcelona!

Submitted by Louis Nixon on Thu, 09/12/2021 - 08:43
Barcelona veteran Gerard Pique cannot believe it!

Who would have thought it a couple of years ago? If someone had told you that Hammers, then deeply embroiled in a relegation battle, might well be facing up to the mighty and legendary Barcelona in an 'elite' European Cup Competition, you might have thought that they needed sectioning under the mental health act!

Barca's 3-0 defeat at Bayern Munich, who had nothing to play for having won the group already, saw them finish third, behind Benfica. The last time they were not in the Champions League knockout stages was 2003-04, which was also their last season in the Uefa Cup/Europa League when they were eliminated by Celtic. The Last time they failed to qualify from a Champions League group was in 2000, when Leeds finished above them. Barca have won the tournament four times since then.

The weird thing is that Barcelona have to 'endure' a two legged play off, JUST to enable them to have the possibility of being able to play West Ham in the last sixteen! To say the turn around in the clubs' fortunes has been acute would be an understatement. Barca's fall from grace has mirrored Hammers rise to prominence by its intensity, that is not to say however that they would be 'easy meat' if they were to face David Moyes' Boys, but come on, Barcelona under the floodlights at the London Bowl?

Apart from Barcelona, RB Leipzig, Porto, Borussia Dortmund, Sheriff, Zenit St Petersburg, Sevilla and either Atalanta or Villarreal will ALL take place in the UEFA Europa League Cup play offs to reach the last 16.

Who would ever have thought it? You never know, but there might well be an uptake in the sales of those hideous half-and-half scarves if the fixture happens. I can confirm there will be at least one 'half & half' added to the Org's paraphernalia room! - LN

Bad Rudiger News, January Signing Rumours

nevillenixon's picture
Submitted by nevillenixon on Wed, 08/12/2021 - 13:23

After a rather underwhelming summer transfer season, both the fans and the press are eager to find out about what players would go where next January. When it comes to the Hammers, everyone from BettingNews88 to the top sports outlets seems to know for sure that German international Antonio Rudiger is headed for London Stadium this summer on a free transfer. Now, in turn, insiders over at Claret & Hugh have heard something that can dout the Hammers’ hopes to have him next summer.

Rudiger on many radars

Apparently, the Chelsea centre-back is on many radars ahead of the January transfer window, a time when - if he doesn’t strike a deal with the Blues - he can sign a pre-contract with a new club. Reports speak of several high-profile - and wealthy - clubs keeping an eye on Rudiger, including Premier League clubs Man City and Man United, and international clubs like AC Milan and Real Madrid. Rudiger’s contract talks with Chelsea have stalled, so it seems his exit from Stamford Bridge is set in stone. Apparently, Real Madrid is in pole position to sign him.

Jason Knight might come

On the other hand, West Ham has reportedly joined the race for Derby County midfielder Jason Knight. The 20-year-old graduated from Derby’s youth academy in 2019 and has been part of the first team ever since. During his time with the Rams, he has played in more than 80 league games and scored 10 goals. At the same time, he has represented his native Ireland at every level from U-17 to U-21 and has played 9 times with the senior National Team as well, scoring once in the process. Although he signed a new contract with Derby in 2020, keeping him in the team until 2023. But changes are on the horizon for the Rams: the club’s administrators are selling, and this may also result in offloading some up-and-coming talent in January. Aside from the Hammers, other clubs like Everton, Leeds, and Burnley, among others, are reportedly interested in him.

Bird and Buchanan are also on the radar

Other players are also on the Hammers’ radar ahead of the January transfer window, including central midfielder Max Bird and left-back Lee Buchanan, both of them currently at Derby. Buchanan’s contract expires next summer, and he is already rumoured to head over to Celtic afterwards but a lot can change until then. Bird, in turn, is under contract with the Rams until 2024 but this doesn’t stop several clubs, including but not limited to the Hammers, to be interested in snatching him early next year. Among the potential contenders, rumours speak of clubs like Norwich and Brentford.

Get in there Moysie and Newman!

West Ham Wishes Happy Birthday To Sir Geoff Hurst

nevillenixon's picture
Submitted by nevillenixon on Wed, 08/12/2021 - 11:05

There are many things to look forward to before the holidays - but there is also one to look back on. So, before you dig into today’s news and odds in your favourite soccer betting app, take a moment and join West Ham United’s official webpage in wishing Sir Geoff Hurst a happy 80th.

A long and fruitful career

Geoff Hurst was introduced to football at a very early age - his father, Charlie Hurst, was himself a professional player, having played with the likes of the Bristol Rovers and Rochdale at the time. As you might expect, he grew up obsessed with football, so his career choice to become a pro shouldn’t come as a surprise.

He joined West Ham as an apprentice in 1957, at the age of 15, and signed a contract with the club a year later. At the same time, he represented England in half a dozen youth matches. His salary was 7 quid a week at the time (close to £140 today) and he received a £20 (around £390 today) signing fee.

His career with the Hammers was the textbook example of “long and fruitful”. Between 1958 and 1972, he played in more than 400 league games as a striker and scored 180 goals in the process, along with more than 80 other games, so his total before leaving the Hammers for Stoke City was 500 matches and 242 goals. He won three West Ham United Hammer of the Year awards and won the European Cup Winners' Cup in the 1964-1965 season with the team.

The Three Lions

Geoff Hurst made his first appearance as part of the Three Lions in 1966, in a match against Germany. This was followed by further games against Scotland and Yugoslavia, both in which he performed well - this ensured his place in England’s FIFA World Cup squad. He was sidelined for most of the tournament due to his poor performance in warm-up games but returned to the turf in the quarter-final against Argentina, where he scored England’s winning goal. He ultimately remained part of the English offence. The match ultimately ended with England’s resounding victory against West Germany, even with one of the goals - a ghost goal - still being subject of controversy to this day. Hurst scored a hat-trick in the match - to this day, this remains the only hat-trick scored in a World Cup final.

Sir Geoff Hurst scored his last goal for West Ham nearly five decades ago but he remains to this day one of the most beloved and legendary players to ever set foot on the turf in West Ham Stadium. We wish him a Happy Birthday!

2x 3-2 Wins Versus Top 2..Cost-2 Centre Backs

Submitted by Louis Nixon on Tue, 07/12/2021 - 11:48

2x3-2 Wins Versus Top 2-Cost=2 Centre Backs

So there we have it, Kurt Zouma will be out injured for a bare minimum of six weeks after the results of a scan were revealed, he could be unavailable for up to THREE months following the injury he picked up in the thrilling 3-2 victory over the then Premier League leaders! Zouma's injury of course was preceded by the season ending injury fellow centre back Angelo Ogbonna sustained in the equally enthralling 3-2 victory over current Premier League leaders Liverpool!

If losing centre backs is the price that the club has to pay then there may be trouble ahead, only Issa Diop and 'Les Dawson' are now left as 'recognised' centre backs, so David Moyes will HAVE to promote from within in order to make up the numbers ahead of the January window opening.

Fortunately there are a raft of young talented players coming through the ranks, fate has dictated that one or two of them will get their chance, it is up to the youngsters to grab their opportunity. LN

Irons January Plans Derailed

News that Kurt Zouma will be out of contention for between 6-12 weeks, whilst unwelcome came as no surprise to anyone who has played football at ANY level, thankfully Kurt's injury was short of the full ACL that was feared. Nevertheless his lack of availability, in tandem with the loss of Angelo Ogbonna for the entire remainder of the season, has meant that David Moyes HAS had to seriously refocus his January transfer window plans at the last minute.

Hammers now only have two recognised centre backs available for selection, Craig Dawson and Issa Diop, both players have been criticised by fans and media alike, but Moyes will be pleased he has both of them, NOW! Moyes had been reluctant to select Issa Diop, but the injuries to Ogbonna and Zouma mean he has no other viable option.

Jamal Baptiste has been 'championed' by Angelo Ogbonna and despite his tender 17 years is a fine player in the making, some might say he is too young to be thrown in at the deep end, whereas others say you will never know if you don't try, citing if you are good enough, you are old enough!

Realistically David Moyes HAS to bring in an additional centre back during the January window, the need for a striker pales into insignificance by comparison. All is not as bad as it seems though, because David Moyes has the unique opportunity of being able to give Jamal Baptiste and one or two of the other promising youngsters who are currently on the fringes of the first team, a competitive run out against Dinamo Zagreb during Thursday evening's UEFA Europa League Cup game.

Hammers have already won the group and have therefore avoided the further two games they would have had to play in order to progress further in the competition as it stands the result on Thursday is ENTIRELY academic and is an ideal opportunity for David Moyes to really put the focus on youth in a POSITIVE way, as opposed to the 'Sam Allardyce' way.

The young lads who are given the chance need to grab it while they can. - Ed

Leeds It Is In FA Cup 3d Round

Submitted by Louis Nixon on Mon, 06/12/2021 - 20:21

Hammers have been handed a home tie against Marco Biesla's Leeds United in the Fa Cup 3rd round, the games will be played between the 7th and the 10th of January 2022. Played under the lights at the London Stadium this game could be a cracker, for the neutral!

You can guarantee the players will know they have been in a game after facing Biesla's 'murder ball' squad, what they lack in skill they more than make up for with endeavour and this will be a tough fixture for Moyes' boys. At least it is a home game, and will probably be priced so as to make it affordable for a full house to be in attendance.

The importance of the FA Cup may have faded, but it still represents a route into Europe as well as giving fans the chance to enjoy seeing their team in yet another competition. By the time the game comes around, there might be one or two new faces in place, the Cup would be an ideal opportunity to give those players a competitive run out, as well as one or two of the youth players. Moyes needs to do an Allardyce

mcbikeman's picture
Submitted by mcbikeman on Sun, 05/12/2021 - 11:23

Thought that headline would catch your attention lol but i am talking about this Thursday the games a dead rubber so Moyes needs to wheel out some of the academy players that are getting good reviews...we all rmbr what that P***k did against Forest in the cup filling the team with youth players then having a pop at us saying we had asked for that what an Arrogant knob he was....but this time it makes sense already qualified two tough away games in quick succession in the league coming up so i hope Moyes and i am sure he will will see sense and not risk key players for what is a nothing game as a fan we understand that dont we?
