That £75 Million Transfer Kitty Was Just A Ruse! Spend Continues!

Some of the definitions of ruse are, a ploy, stratagem, tactic, move, device, scheme, trick, gambit, cunning plan, manoeuvre, contrivance, expedient, dodge, subterfuge, machination, game, wile, smokescreen or red herring. When Manuel Pellegrini was unveiled as West Ham United's new manager he, along with newly appointed head of recruitment Mario Husillos, were ostensibly given a £75 Million 'war chest' that in today's market was more of a transfer kitty. For once Hammers seem to have conducted their player recruitment incredibly well with the sigings of Ryan Fredericks, Lukasz Fabianski, Issa Diop, Jack Wilshere, Andriy Yarmolenko and Fabian Balbuena in addition to the 'marquee' signing of Felipe Anderson that was officially confirmed today (sunday 15.06.2018).

Two immediate points of interest are that (a) David Sullivan and the rest of the West Ham hierarchy kept their mouths shut, eschewing the publicity that they surely craved for finally having started to fulfill their promises made when migrating to the London Stadium, this 'radio silence' must have been difficult to maintain so fair play to them. The second more salient point (b) is that there have been some shrewd manoeuvres carried out with regards to the 'actual' budget available for player transfers, the original £75 Million budget mooted to be available set a bench mark for negotiations, clubs knew what West Ham could or could not afford and therefore conducted their negotiations with the overall budget in mind.

Had West Ham announced that they were giving Manuel Pellegrini £100 Million, clubs would have adjusted their asking prices accordingly, so in what was a simple but very effective ploy Hammers were able to keep the lid on the fact that they had already made contingency plans for a short term loan enabling them to keep spending when it would seem numerically impossible. The short term 'loan' facility will enable the club to hold on to players that Manuel Pellegrini might want to retain, as opposed to having to shift them out in order to balance the books straight away. A further bonus is that West Ham will be able to hold out for the best price possible when selling players during this window, they will also be able to keep some players at the club until the January transfer window when a premium can be obtained by selling to clubs that are in desperate need of reinforcements to avoid relegation.

There are at least two more signings in the pipe line which would mean a total of NINE new players having arrived at the club, the spending will edge towards an eye watering £125 Million by the time all the intended business is complete. What about financial fare play rules many fans will ask? So long as the spend against income ratio is maintained over the course of the financial year there should be no issues, the £50 Million shortfall can be made up with player sales, but who and for how much?

It may be unfair judging a player on just one game, but Robert Snodgrass didn't do himself any favours during the friendly with Wycombe and El Pel's body language seemed to show that he had seen enough. How much could the club get back for a player they spent over £10 Million on 18 Months ago? Well with the ludicrous value of home grown players escalating all of the time a figure of £8 Million shouldn't be too hard to achieve. Cheikou Kouyate is the next name on the chopping block, the Senegal national team captain's place in the centre of the park will come under increased scrutiny especially given the arrival of Isso Diop and Fabian Balbuena. There would be plenty of takers for Kouyate and a fee of £15 Million wouldn't be unattainable, it remains to be seen if Pellegrii 'fancies' Kouyate or not, much depends on what formation the Chilean eventually chooses to use. Michail Antonio is the next 'high' profile first team member who there have been rumours is wanted, in his case Crystal palace have emerged as favourites to sign the mitcham born 'utility' player. Antonio has really suffered with injury, particularly his hamstrings which may put potential suitors off, some of his injuries may have been as a result of having to play as a right back when Slaven Billic was still manager, Antonio used to look dead on his feet half way through the first half! He is though the type player tha Pellegrini likes so he may well decide to retain his services, but if he did want to sell Antonio then a price of £15 Million to £20 Million would not be too extreme.

The above listed player sales would yield £43 Million, just about what it will take to balance the books, but strength in depth has been non existent in the past and if West Ham are finally really going to reach the 'next level' then a careful balancing act will have to be conducted. In the short term West Ham fans should only enjoy the rareified air of a successful transfer window conducted without decption and with plenty of time for the new players to integrate, this can't be West Ham can it? - Ed

Get Ander There Son! Feliping Miracle Record Transfer Smasher

Crikey oh Mikey, they've even gone and done it! West Ham United have obliterated their transfer record with the eye watering purchase of Felipe Anderson from 'hardball fc', in what must have been one of the most protracted transfers ever Hammers finally have their 'golden heeled racer' in the dazzling form of Felipe Anderson. Of course being a new massive signing for the club he will have to endure the standard 'injury initiation test' required of all new signings which requires the new signing to sustain an injury as soon as possible, in fact past winners including David James have upped the ante by getting injured well before their first top flight team game.

The massive transfer fee involved is a worry for those of a nervous disposition, what if he does get crocked early doors? That is just about half the transfer budget blown, but the point is to get quality you need quality, that is the way things work. At Christmas the butchers selling Poultry with the biggest queue outside becomes the place people want to check out, whereas the place that has sparse attendance is deemed as second rate, it's human nature. Without wanting to continue the analogy too much longer the point is West Ham has suddenly become an attractive destination again for a whole host of reasons, not least the manager in situ Manuel Pellegrini.

On the subject of massive expenditure for a player, when West Ham purchased Dean Ashton for £8 Million back in the day , according to a number cruncher associate of ours that expenditure was the eqivalent to £40 Million if you take in to account revenue streams in place at the relevant times. So in effect whilst the Anderson deal seems massive, and it is a huge deal, it is actually no more of a gamble than when 'Deano' was signed.

It is to be hoped that Anderson fairs better, and that he avoids clumsey players from his own team falling on him and inflicting a career ending injury on him while training with his national team, but this is West Ham! - Ed

No No To Ya Ya Please Fans Have A Voice Over Toure

Disturbing reports emerged at the beginning of the transfer window linking West Ham United with a move for ex-Manchester City star Ya Ya Toure, presumably due to the fact that the two of them worked successfully at the Etihad, but that was a long time ago. Long suffering Hammers fans assumed, incorrectly as it is, that it was going to be more same old same old lots of promises made 90% of which are broken, fortunately and not in too small measure because of the presence of Manuel Pellegrini and Mario (the huse) Husillo, this season's player recruitment has been nothing short of astonishing.

We have previously gone in to the reasons why the club are able to 'splash the cash' much more freely this season than those that preceded it, but now they have recovered from losing their 'pay day loan' facility it is a case of onwards and upwards following the arrivals of Andriy Yarmolenko, Issa Diop, Ryan Fredericks, Lukasz Fabianski, Jack Wilshere, Fabian Balbuena and as will be confirmed later today that of Felipe Anderson in a transfer breaking record move from Lazio.

The apparently self inflicted injuries to Andy Carroll and Winston Reid have somewhat blotted what was an otherwise immaculate copy book, everything that went wrong during last season's recruitment has been going right during this one's, so the rumours that are again circulating with regards to Ya Ya Toure linking up with his old mucker El Pel are being received with shock, surely Ya Ya must be a No No for a West Ham side looking to exploit their new youth, vigour and talent.

While no one can doubt how brilliant, if a little churlish Toure has been as a player, he is exactly that, a has been! Last season resembled a senior citizen reunuion at the London Stadium on some occasions with the club having the second oldest squad in the Barclays Premier League, only West brom had an older squad and everyone knows what happened to them, they will now be paying the price as they fight to get out of the Championship or the EFL as it likes to be known.

Having ticked all the right boxes so far, it would be a really gross mistake to undo much of the excellent forward thinking work that has been done by taking a step back to the past, Ya Ya will find a club no problem, but please let it not be West Ham United. - Ed

Carroll & 'Balconygate' True Or False?

nevillenixon's picture
Submitted by nevillenixon on Fri, 13/07/2018 - 08:47

The main element of a 'fake news' story is that there has to be some form of tangability or credability in order for the deception to succeed, so as rumours that West Ham United striker Andy Carroll picked up a serious injury whilst drunkenly attempting to climb up a Hotel balcony in order to avoid having been caught breaking the players' club curfew, the signs are that either someone with an agenda has created a furore about the perpetually injured player or that there might be more than a smidging of truth to the story, the fact that fellow 'injuree' Winston Reid was supposed to be involved in the late night naughtiness seems so over the top that it too may be true!

This 'supposed' sequence of events have only come to light following the club's official statement released on Thursday:
West Ham United have confirmed that Andy Carroll and Winston Reid will be sidelined for three months due to ankle and knee injuries respectively, both players will require surgery on the problems and will miss the opening stages of the season as a result, returning home early from the club's pre-season training camp in Switzerland.

It may be a coincidence, however it is rather strange the news that both players should suddenly require surgery comes just days after each were given a glowing assesment by the medical team, so who is kidding who? Whilst the jury might still be out on 'Winnie' Reid's activities, 'Big Andy's' past will surely work against him, any thoughts that he may have had to endeer himself to new manager Manuel Pellegrini by producing his immaculately dentured smile will have dissipated before you can say 'January transfer window'. Even if the story proves to be untre, the fact that Andy Carroll has picked up yet another injury will surely be enough to convince "el Pel' and the 'Huse' that persisting with any sort of plans involving Big Andy would be pointless.

Fans have tried to adore Carroll, give him the 'love' to recover from his injuries and show what a tremendous footballer he is, and briefly but all too briefly he did give hope, but to paraphrase Bubbles, then like our dreams they fade and die. Probably better for all concerned that some other club can be the recipient of something that might have been! - Ed

Quelle Suprise! Carroll Crocked Nearly Missed His Holiday

nevillenixon's picture

Drum roll, West Ham United’s new Head of Medical, Richard Collinge, is providing his update as the first team squad prepare to wrap up their pre season training camp in Switzerland, and all seems good. “All in all, the training camp has been a very productive one and the players have responded very well to the programme that has been scheduled for the first phase of pre-season,” he says. “We have had a variety of physical work, either side of the opening warm-up match against FC Winterthur on Sunday, with every session planned meticulously and the rest and recovery between training also monitored carefully. “The new players have settled in very well. Jack Wilshere has obviously been with us for just a few days and so has followed a slightly different programme, but he will step things up next week. “We have also welcomed back Marko Arnautovic during the trip, and Michail Antonio has been taking part in full training with the rest of the squad so generally things have been going well.” Collinge has enjoyed a busy and intensive start to life with the Hammers.

Unfortunately, it is not all good news on the injury front, with both Andy Carroll and Winston Reid having to return early to London after suffering setbacks in their respective recoveries from injury, which will keep the pair out for a minimum of three months each. Collinge said: “Andy played and scored in Sunday’s match but is still reporting some discomfort in his ankle and further scans have revealed that he requires some minor surgery to provide more strength and stability to the area. Now call it writers curse or whatever but we had only recently espoused the possibility that Big Andy would actually be fit at the beginning of the season for the first time in six years! His travel agent was wondering where his next rolex was coming from without his annual exclusive holiday booking for 'Geordie Boy' and his cute missus, I mean after all that's what happens when the footie season is just about to start isn't it? Big Andy gets injured!

Well at least that is one square peg that Pellegrini doesn't have to fit in to a round hole, but with "Winnie' needing to go under the knife as well, one can imagine that a certain Mr Sullivan will be sweating about the coffers of the club. Both Winston Reid and Andy Carroll had been earmarked for departure, their combined sales could have yielded around £20 Million at the least, which is about exactly the same amount as the 'black hole' created by the Club's near £90 Million expenditure assuming the Felipe 'Gone with the wind' Anderson transfer saga finally gets over the line.

It looks as if the January transfer window will be the time to sell both players, Carroll will be in the last year of his contract and will hopefully get moved on to a 'no reserve' purchaser who gets carried away! 'Winny' is a different story, he has a couple of years left on his good money contract and might want to 'fight for his place', unfortunately his inury record just keeps getting worse, partly due to his 'Maori Warrior' attitude, which while endeering to the fans is an approach that cannot be continued in to the twilight of a player's career without the risk of picking up an increasing amount of injuries as is the case with Reid.

Expect plenty of 'positive' recovery stories about the duo on the club's official website, but there will be more than a bit of Bernard Mathews in the sentiment of the coverage! - Ed
PS: Have been prompted to 'educate' those who aren't of a certain age that Bernard Mathews was known as the 'Turkey' Man, hence the 'preparing the players' ahead of The New Year reference!

Suddenly Renewing Your Season Ticket Wasn't Such A Bad Idea

nevillenixon's picture
Submitted by nevillenixon on Wed, 11/07/2018 - 18:43

Many West Ham fans were dubious about renewing their season tickets following the debacle of last season, everything that could go wrong did and a few more things that shouldn't have did! Rubbish performances, dodgy stadium and a seemingly inept greedy board. Fast forward to now and you could be in a paralell universe, the much maligned board, particularly majority share holder David Sullivan, have taken a back seat when it comes to recruitment and left the business to professionals, moreover they have to the most part managed to keep themselves out of the media ahead of what have been some spectacular signings, of course Mr Sullivan had to blot his copybook, much to the annoyance of the 'Huse', by going main stream to say further signings were on their way just as the Felipe Anderson saga is about to reach a positive conclusion.

Whether by fan protest, survival instinct, just good business sense or maybe even a genuine love for the club, the pantomine villains that are the club's hierarchy are finally beginning to make good the promises made to fans ahead of moving from the much beloved Boleyn Ground to the much hated London Stadium, finally the club are trying to do things the right way and not on the cheap as they have perpetually done in the past. We have tried to cover this issue before by covering the 'pay day loan' issue the club had to cope with, but as we have mentioned, this season the gloves are off to a certain extent.

There is no told you so about what is currently happening, more like I had hoped to tell you so! - Ed
