WCN Vlasic-A Curious Case

Seeing Nikola Vlašić playing for Croatia has prompted many fans to question what exactly happened regarding the 25 year old's transfer from CSKA Moscow to West Ham. Vlasic is currently on loan at Torino and went there in a deal that could be made permanent for around £15 million, he has already shown enough while at the Italian club to be a bargain buy for the price on offer, one which Hammers committed themselves to when sending the forward out on loan.

On the face of it selling a player at a £15 Million loss looks like a crazily bad bit of business, something West Ham are serial offenders for committing, but the Vlasic deal 'stinks' for several reasons. There is no way on earth that Hammers would have paid all the money up front for Vlasic from Moscow, there would have been an arrangement in place similar to most transfer deals done whereby the full fee is paid in tranches divided equally over the length of the players new contract.

The 'grey area' in the Vlasic saga is that the movement of funds between british clubs and those in Russia are currently restricted in their entirety, even financial big hitters like Chelsea are unable to conduct business with Russian clubs. They are unable to sign Dynamo Moscow and Russia midfielder Arsen Zakharyan until sporting sanctions and money transfer measures imposed on the 19-year-old's country change.

So where do the current circumstances leave the Vlasic deal? At most Hammers will have paid in the region of £5 Million in actual cash to Moscow, meaning there is still a further £25 Million due. You can bet your bottom dollar that Sullivan and the rest of the board will have explored every opportunity there is to avoid paying the extra money, especially given the intransigence of all parties involved in the Ukraine conflict to find a resolution.

If Vlasic does joinTorino then the fee of £15 Million will have to be set aside to pay for the transfer once things have stabilised in the Ukraine, but there is every possibility the conflict will drag on perpetually. It is true Vlasic's time at West Ham was less than successful, but he didn't really get much game time with many viewing his signing as a David Moyes knee jerk reaction to not being able to sign his 'footballing love child' Jesse Lingard.

Whatever the reasons behind the purchase were the exact details remain shrouded and will do for at least 18 months until financial dealings over that period have to be declared to companies house, by that time Vlasic might have moved on permanently meaning he can then be treated as an amortised player, amortisation costs are seen as an annual expense, like the wages paid to players and thus can be identified in the clubs' year-end financial statements.

The club were 'coy' to say the least when we got in touch with them, simply saying such matters are NOT for the public domain. So where does this leave the Vlasic transfer? Nobody knows! - Ed

West Ham have appointed Michael Doherty as the clubs International/UK Emerging Talent scout.

Doherty recently left Celtic after 5 years in a similar role. He has also worked with David Moyes before at both Everton & Sunderland as a first team and academy scout.

Not sure we need an emerging talent scout. Not as if Moyes will ever play them

Aguerd Aggravates Injury?

West Ham United's 26 year old Morocco International centre back Nayef Aguerd is facing a lengthy spell out of the game following the injury he sustained playing against Spain in the Qatar World Cup. Aguerd was on the receiving end of some 'tough but fair' challenges during the game before finally having to leave the field following a desperate last gasp saving tackle.

It was not clear from the actual footage whether Aguerd's injury was in the same region as the one that required operating on at the beginning of the season, but there is a considerable groundswell of opinion that it may well be a question of Aguerd playing too much too soon in order to represent his country at a World Cup, albeit one that is deeply flawed in it's origin.

The only encouragement for the club's anxious medical team was that Aguerd was holding his thigh when he exited the pitch, as opposed to the ankle that he recently had surgery on. It is always difficult to assess 'impact' injuries, especially those sustained when the player is pumped full of adrenalin, it is generally accepted that at least 24 hours are required before a proper comprehensive assessment can be made, sometimes even longer!

Hammers don't seem to have much luck with their players and injuries sustained while on International duty, Aguerd joins a long list of players injured while representing their clubs, Dean Ashton, David James, Manu Lanzini and Declan Rice to name a few. It s to be hoped that the injury is not too severe, but sending players off to play in a global tournament slap bang in the middle of a normal domestic season was always going to have consequences.

Anyway, Aguerd didn't look too badly injured as he celebrated Morocco's absolutely outstanding victory on penalties over Cup favourites Spain, will he be fit for the 1/4 final? - Ed

Once Bitten 1000 Times Shy?

Submitted by Louis Nixon on Tue, 29/11/2022 - 11:15

West Ham United majority share holder David Sullivan has regularly vented his spleen in public about the 'outrage' that is currently in place whereby other clubs can sneak in and 'steal' academy players that the club have spent huge amounts of time and resources training up for the possibiity of the youngster representing the first team, only for Spuds or Leeds or particularly Watford to offer 'excessive' wages to the boys parents or greedy agents.

Conor Connors and Harrison Ashby are the latest in a string of 'starlets' that the club are in danger of losing as their contracts run down, so why are the club letting what is obviously a dreadful situation occur? Eyebrows were more than raised when the club sold Grady Diangana to West Brom, with many believing the club had sold themselves short, well Grady has hardly been pulling tress up with the Baggies has he?

Most top flight clubs will have a chequered transfer history, usually influenced by an appalling bit of business which leads to a knee jerk reaction that can have far reaching consequences. Hammers knee jerk reaction which has now become more of a constant dead leg to continue within the fitness vernacular, was the case of Reece Oxford. Once lauded as a new Rio Ferdinand, Hammers panicked into offering the just turned 17 year old a £25,000 per week excluding image rights and bonuses to fend off the very real attentions of Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottingham and the Manc clubs.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing particularly in football, unfortunately the money went to the kid's head and he became very unpopular within the squad do to his propensity for hanging out with his 'homies' and doing his best to impersonate that other lost cause Ravel Morrison! What should have been a piece of clever 'nuturing' business instead turned out to be a manager sacking influencer as young Reece began to believe his own and that of his agent's myth.

The club eventually 'bounced' him out at a fraction of his real value to the Bundesliga where he was 'found out' and had to drop down a league before finally returning to the top flight, a definite case of what might of been....football is full of them!

Surely though enough water has flowed under the bridge for the club to alter it's stance on the promising new crop of youngsters emerging from what was once the most famous academy in World Football. Surely it is time to put up or shut up when it comes to the youth players, how many more have to slip through the club's fingers before a line in the sand between the past and the now can be drawn?

After all, there used to be an entire hour of state paid for TV 'glorifying' the Lottery every Saturday Night...unthinkable now. Just as it is unthinkable in modern day football to turn a club's back on what is going on now just because of something that happened in the past! Get over it Three D's. - LN

Zoo Has Op On Long Term Injury

West Ham United have confirmed that Kurt Zouma has had surgery on the knee injury that has been troubling him for several seasons, the French defender will now continue his rehabilitation at Rush Green with the Club’s medical team. It was decided that the break for the Wash Cup was an ideal opportunity to fix Zouma's long term knee issue which he had coped with for years, but had started to impact on his match day performances.

"Everyone at West Ham United would like to wish Kurt a speedy recovery" is the message coming from the club and one that will be echoed by Hammers fans far and wide. Most top class players 'manage' some sort of long term injury, some revert to cortisone injections but they can lead to long term injuries later in life, IF an operation can do the trick then it is a far better option, but one that is rarely utilised giiven the time constraints of top flight football.- Ed

England vs USA betting preview – West Ham’s Declan Rice to star again

England continue their World Cup campaign when they take on the United States of America at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor on Friday night. The Three Lions got off to the perfect start with a hugely impressive 6-2 demolition of Iran on Monday afternoon. Youngsters Bukayo Saka and Jude Bellingham starred during the victory, while Raheem Sterling, Jack Grealish and Marcus Rashford also got their names on the scoresheet.

It was certainly a statement of intent from Gareth Southgate’s side, especially when you consider some of the shock results we’ve seen already in Qatar, so they should be in confident mood heading into this game. However, Southgate admitted after the game he was disappointed to have conceded twice against Iran so he’ll want to see England keep a clean sheet on Friday.

The USA on the other hand were held to a 1-1 draw by Wales in their group stage opener. A late Gareth Bale penalty shared the spoils after Timothy Weah had opened the scoring in the first half. England have won eight of the last 11 meetings between the two sides and another victory on Friday would all-but secure safe passage to the knockout stages.

Betting odds

The World Cup is expected to attract a huge amount of interest in the betting markets as it’s always one of the most anticipated sporting events of the year. Therefore, betting sites will be vying for your business with enticing offers so it’s important to look at the best online casino reviews before deciding on which bookmaker to use for placing your bets. England are currently priced as the 7/1 joint-second favourites along with Spain and France to win the World Cup. Brazil are the 3/1 favourites to go all the way in Qatar.

The Three Lions are also the 11/20 favourites to beat the USA on Friday night. You can get odds of 5/1 on the US if you think there will be another shock, or 16/5 on the draw. Harry Kane drew a blank against Iran and also picked up a knock, but the Tottenham hitman is still the 11/4 favourite to open the scoring against the USA. A 2-1 England win is priced at 13/2 and if we combine that with Kane opening the scoring, we can get odds of 30/1 with some bookmakers.

Rice starts again

West Ham star Declan Rice put in another solid performance at the heart of England’s midfield against Iran. The 23-year-old has firmly established himself as a regular under Southgate and should keep his place in midfield against the USA. Bellingham was outstanding alongside Rice in the middle of the park and the Borussia Dortmund star should also keep his place as they’re forming an excellent partnership. If Southgate wants to freshen things up, then Mason Mount could be the man to drop out with Jordan Henderson, Jack Grealish and Phil Foden all options. James Maddison is still struggling with a knock so he may miss out once again but Kane is expected to be fit to start up front after recovering from an ankle injury.
As for the USA, Chelsea attacker Christian Pulisic will be the main threat along with Timothy Weah.

Prediction

The last time these two met 12 years ago it ended in a draw and the US shouldn’t be underestimated. However, England showed against Iran they have the quality to be a real force at this World Cup and they should have too much quality for the USA on Friday night. England 2-1 USA - Ed

Rangers Interested In Moyes

nevillenixon's picture
Submitted by nevillenixon on Tue, 22/11/2022 - 09:37

Having taken over from Steven Gerrard as Rangers manager a year ago, Giovanni van Bronckhorst enjoyed a remarkable run to the Europa League final which plastered over over the cracks of their domestic form. Europe got everybody excited and it didn't seem to matter too much that while they were beating Borussia Dortmund and Red Star Belgrade they were drawing with Aberdeen and Ross County. What was more important in the wider picture is they were dropping points against Celtic, Dundee United and Motherwell, results that were masked by victories over Braga, RB Leipzig and a place in the final of a European competition?

So Van Bronckhorst managed to take the Scottish club one stage further than David Moyes managed with West Ham by reaching the Europa League final which they eventually lost to Eintracht Franfurt, once Van Bronckhorst lost the comfort zone of European success he was in trouble as there was no pleasing distraction anymore and scrutiny was placed on the club's domestic form which meant he was a 'dead manager' walking.
Reports emanating from Ibrox are that there is a distinct interest in bringing Moyes to Rangers, the club cannot afford to pay out compensation to West Ham should Moyes be approached but if, and it is a bid IF Hammers have decided to part company with their manager then him moving to Ibrox could present a situation that suits all parties because West Ham wouldn't have to pay Moyes off and Rangers wouldn't have to pay ANY compensation.

This is of course heresay and there is also the elephant in the room, more of a mammoth, which is Moyes' past association with Rangers' bitter rivals Celtic. Things move quickly in football and the latest events surrounding Giovanni van Bronckhorst might bring about some seismic changes, 'phoney war Qatar break induced gossip' or a story with legs on it? We shall see, but it is not beyond comprehension. - Ed
