should the situation not be made clear to all?

just thinking that should clubs not come out and tell us if they have a board that buys the players and not the manager? I agree that this may be the way forward as betty puts forward a good case for it but why does there need to be this secrecy? no one seems to know if rodgers buys his players or the board, we guessed last season that the board bought most of the players. at sunderland poyet came out and said it plain and simple, the board bought the players and he was the coach. what i'm getting at is for example if the board are buying the players for bilic, to what extent is this? is he giving a final nod or is he actually on a subbed somewhere and simply being told so and so has signed? i believe it is healthier to clarify this because at the end of the day bilic will be judged on the teams performances and as fans we should know if he's actually fully to blame for failed signings or whether to cut him slack and say well he's not. a lot of us turned on sam for the signings he made and rightly so if he made the likes of jarvis etc. but i just think theres no need to be secretive about this, just tell us which way it is.

It's certainly not helpful to have a "Sullivan player and a Allardyce player" situation like we had the last few seasons. It just encourages the blame game, and that is destructive to team and fan morale. So you make a good point. I think the days of the manager who controls all transfers are long gone, never to return. But obviously it's good if the manager has a big say in who we bring in, and who we transfer out; then you have the chief scout, who should be the most knowleageable about players... So in a perfect world it will be a collaborative effort, but we seldom live in a perfect world. So I think, maybe... you are unlikely to get a "X is responsible completely for all transfers" type statement from any club. I just hope we don't again get into the situation where the manager is thought to be snubbing a player because he didn't sign him.

i think the only say the board should have is yah or nay regarding price , surely it should be a collective process with the management team sitting down and discussing it , if the player is an unknown then its up to the scouting system but if the player is well known , indeed reaching the murky heights of celebrity status and it goes without saying he would be a huge asset to the club well then of course the board have to ok it but thats the only input they should have

I think managing will become a young man's game if others are identifying targets for the team, can't see any of the old brigade putting up with that

Too much money in it now for owners to allow one man to dictate everything, at the higher levels anyway. The chairman who hands his chequebook over to his manager and then sits back and lets him get on with it is a dead breed.

The players West Ham brought in over the last 12 months have nearly all been down to David Sullivan (Sakho, Nene, Zarate, Valencia, Kouyate) mainly these five I dont know about the others but in my book all five were decent buys/loans. Allardyce played 3 of them but not Zarate or Nene in all reality. So Bilic will have the same deal imo basically as a coach and if SUGO between them buy players of a similar statue I wont be unhappy as I suspect nor will most of the fans.
I do agree with you though that perhaps the club should come out and actually tell us their buying policy and whether Bilic has a say! I reckon Slaven will do a very good job and we will see West Ham back to a solid defence but all out attack going forward, very similar to Croatia in his first 2-3 years in charge and we will love it! However if he were to fail it will be interesting to see who gets the blame and the honesty about who bought the players?
