Police Presence For Chelsea Match Just in Nick Of Time

Met Police officers will be on duty inside the London Stadium for the first time for West Ham's EFL Cup match against Chelsea on Wednesday, according to a police spokesperson. A temporary 'Airwave' radio communications system has now been installed inside the London Stadium, although Vinci Concessions who run the match day events are yet to confirm details on exactly where officers will be deployed. Fears had been growing that the lack of a suitable system would mean police could not carry out their duties effectively before, during and after what will be the most 'challenging' fixture yet to be held since the move from the old Boleyn Ground.
Way in excess of 50,000 fans are expected for a fixture likely to be assessed in the next few days as a high risk "Category B" or "Category C" game with the Met under increasing pressure to make sure that they have officers stationed within the ground to back up those who would already be deployed outside the Stadium.
Chelsea said they were "disappointed" after they were allocated 5,182 tickets for the game, under competition rules, away teams are entitled to 10 per cent of the stadium's capacity, a 57,000 crowd is expected for the meeting with West Ham hoping to gain revenge for their opening game of the Barclays Premier League loss to their bitter rivals, especially bearing in mind Costa's'skull duggery'.
Chelsea requested their full allocation, 10% of the 57,000 capacity stadium, however Hammers are currently restricted to allocating 5,200 'away' tickets due to infrastructure and ongoing standing issues, up until now the police command centre has been based at Queen Elizabeth Park, with officers only entering the stadium in case of criminal behaviour, a permanent 'Airwave' system is due to be fully installed by February 2017, however a temporary 'Airwave' system has been tested for the past fortnight which relies on a police command vehicle being parked up next to the stadium.
Since the draw was made last month, West Ham along with Chelsea and the Met Police have been in discussions about the security issues surrounding the match, the Met refuse to discuss crowd control tactics ahead of high risk games, but they will be keen to segregate rival fans walking to the stadium from the nearby Stratford Station, although they will also need to place special heed to those fans traveling to and from Hackney Wick, a potentially volatile and lengthy 'running of the gauntlet'.
This match is not being televised, therefore it can be safely assumed that the London Stadium (still no naming rights deal?) will be full to capacity, as will the transport infrastructure and the surrounding facilities. This will be the biggest test of stadium security since the Olympic closing ceremony, but with the added drain on resources of having to deal with potentially confrontational fans along the long spacious routes from the Stadium to the Stratford hub.
It is in everyone's interest for this match to go ahead without incident off the pitch, there will surely be plenty of it on it! The lack of TV coverage might be a blessing, in that those who might have been seeking to have 'made a name' for them selves by having their neanderthal grapplings broadcast to the viewing public, will be less interested in polluting the atmosphere with their presence. - Ed

Carroll

Submitted by edwindup on Thu, 20/10/2016 - 16:02

Another Carroll delay and coming up to nine weeks since he got injured. Everyone is just fed up with this. I think Carroll should surely think of retiring soon. I dread to think what this has cost us over the years. Good new on Ayew and Sakho at least.

3-4-3

back 3 seemed to work very well. we had more of the ball in mid and even antonio looked good on right. is this what we should stick with? or was it a 5-4-1 with wingbacks?

De`Ja Vu As Poor Decisions Cost Hammers Dearly Yet Again!

West Ham United's stuttering start to this season could hardly be compared to last season, such has been the difference. Last season Slaven Billic and his team were riding high having beaten Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool away from home, two defeats at home to eventual Barclays Premier League winners Leicester City and newly promoted Bournemouth were obscured due to the positivity created by the victories over the 'big' teams. However one constant seems to have reared it's ugly head yet again, some might say it is a conspiracy driven by envy with the perception that West Ham managed to acquire a state of the art stadium for next to nothing, others observe that fast counter attacking nature of today's football has outstripped the officials ability to keep up with the game, both physically and mentally, what other explanation could there be for Martin Atkinson and his assistant to have sanctioned a red card for Aaron Cresswell in West Ham's 1-0 hard fought victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. With the TV replays clearly showing (a) that Cresswell was fouled in the area and should have been awarded a penalty instead of receiving a yellow card for 'simulation' and (b) the contentious awarding of a second yellow card less than two minutes later for what appeared to be a legitimate tackle. Never one to shirk a sound bite, Hammers co-owner David Gold took to Twitter to state that there was 'no justice' from the referee, as he was denied a clear penalty and was clearly angry with the rules that West Ham can't appeal the decision as it was two yellow cards rather than a straight red.
Here in lies the rub, just as last season, West Ham will be unfairly denied the services of one of their stellar performers. The club successfully appealed against three straight red cards that were issued, but each time had to endure playing with only ten men for significant passages of play. Cresswell's sending off was quite simply unfair and unjust, as previously mentioned the archaic FA rules state that appeals against two yellow cards are not admissible due to "the possibility of spurious challenges undermining the appeals process on a regular basis" So what exactly do the FA do, apart from filling their snouts at the trough and living in the past? F all would be the answer that fans of most clubs, with the possible exception of Sheffield United, would say. Incorrect key decisions cost Slaven Billic the chance of taking his team in to the Champions League last season, and while no one is pretending that West Ham will be challenging for a top four spot this season because the returning status quo, (not francis and rick) of Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United will more than likely occupy three of the available top four spots.
on our forum thread.
Consolidation of 'dining at the top table', better known as the cash rich EPL, is no small achievement, a quick glance at last season's champions Leicester City results this time round rather prove that last year was unique one off! Mid table security may not be everyone's cup of tea, but the 'work in progress' that is West Ham United, especially given the difficult transition from the well loved Boleyn to the brave new world that is the London Stadium needs time to develop, next up is a vital home game against the perennial flirters with relegation Sunderland. It is a great pity that Billic and the team will be deprived of Aaron Cresswell's services for this crucial fixture, such was the impact of his return following his lengthy spell out with injury, however it is to be hoped that the fillip of winning against Palace will bolster fans and players alike and that feeling will manifest itself with a pleasing performance.
The whole of the team deserve praise for Saturday's victory, Reid, Ogbonna and Kouyate were immense in defence as was Adrian, and although unable to score the goal he craves, the much maligned Simone Zaza put in the sort of shift that fans really appreciate, chasing and harrying the opposition relentlessly. One gets the feeling that IF he can open his account, further goals will surely follow, his performance was reminiscent of vintage Diafra Sakho. Which brings us to a closing question, will West Ham fans ever see the 'Sakman' in the Claret & Blue again? - Ed
NB: Those who complain about lack of atmosphere and how quiet the home crowd is at the London Stadium should listen to how just over two thousand Hammers fans completely out sang the Selhurst crowd continuosly.

Callieri

Just to highlight an article from today's Metro paper -

Callieri featured in their football weekend feature with an interview, where the man stated he wanted to replicate the impact of his fellow countryman Carlitos Tevez...

He has hardly hit the ground running since he joined us on loan and his previous record was nothing to brag about but according to the interview, the young man has high aspirations of cutting it in the English Premier League and hopes to become a contender for our club.

Feel like perhaps he has been a little unlucky for us, probably half of the chances he has had up front on the end of the ball could have been goals - I think he has been better in this respect than Zaza by simply being on the end of stuff but at the same time he has missed some sitters.

He has 6 months to prove himself at the Olympic Stadium - could he come good?

As a side note - the other feature had Raphael Spiegel commenting on why our season hasn't really taken off... Really... why pick our 3rd choice keeper to give an 'insight'???

Feel like papers don't even try these days!

Another International Break Out of the Way

moore2come's picture

Now that the completely pointless International break is out of the way, I can actually look forward to some football again. Of course the way WH are playing atm it's tough to look forward to another 90mins of the same, but that's what we do and it'll never change.
So looking back at my July predictions, I had us down to lose this 2-1. Now considering I tipped us to have 5 wins out of 7 by now ( we have the total opposite), this could be seen as a good omen. Unfortunately the pessimist in me see's no change to that result. Anyone else got a more positive outlook for the game?
