A Good Tactician Needed to Replace Allardyce

I think whoever replaces Allardyce now has a good foundation to work with,a strong first team that can hold its own in the top 6 .Investment in the squad, would obviously be needed to strengthen as Allardyce is finding to his cost .But along with decent investment you must have a modern thinking manager who knows and can implement the modern game ,and that is where Allardyce falls short.Sure ,he knows a lot about the game, has enough experience to put together a decent side that can hold their own in the premiership, but his football has never been something to thrill over ,it's that one ingredient that is missing in his management. He will get his teams playing decent football at times, as we have seen this season, but all too often we see the cracks appear,in his tactical awareness ,his team selection or his substitutions..Its his football philosophy that frustrates me most,as defender in his playing days, that defensive mentality is reflected in his footballing style.A proven modern day football tactician could take the club to the next level, and there are plenty of them out there.Just consider one Marcelo Bielsa,he is an example of a modern day football tactician, manager of Marseille.

Bielsa's signature formation in his squads, which he made famous and brought to the front of the world's mainstream football scene during his coaching tenures in the Argentina national football team, Chile national football team, Athletic Bilbao and Olympique de Marseille, is the 3-3-3-1 formation.

For this formation, the players are: 3 defenders (1 líbero with 2 stoppers at each side), 3 midfielders (1 central midfielder with 2 lateral-volantes at each side), 3 attacking midfielders (1 enganche and 2 wingers at each side), and 1 centreforward. 3-3-3-1 allows great transitions from defending to attacking, as many of the players used in the formation can perform both defensive and attacking tasks. Moreover, it establishes superiority in numbers in every part of the field, since with this formation his teams could defend with 7 players, attack with 6-7 players, or protect a scoreline by overwhelming the midfield with 6 players. To use 3-3-3-1, all players have to quickly set to attacking positions when the ball is in the team's possession, and all players have to aggressively press and recover the ball when it isn't in possession, so it requires great teamwork and understanding between teammates.

This signature style of Bielsa's had so much influence in the football scene that many present coaches, former players under Bielsa's command, are heavily influenced by the style, like Diego Simeone, Mauricio Pochettino, Matías Almeyda and Marcelo Gallardo

Don't know anything about Bielsa, but do think we need a manager with more positivity and flair. The squad, whomever is in charge next season, needs a lot of strengthening and Chumps quality players removed before we can even think of challenging the top 6 or 7, or seriously consider Europe. Will they risk a new man in such an important year? I'm still on the fence, but sliding towards the new man side.

Yeah that's the tough question, isn't it? It's not an easy one to answer, and is the reason a lot of people would keep Sam, simply on the basis that we won't get relegated.

I think that is a very weak argument some use to keep Sam,its implying that no other managers out there can do his job. Its' better the devil you know' mentality that prevents progress because although I believe Allardyce will take the club forward,it will be to the detriment of playing modern football with modern ideas.

There are plenty of managers out there that could do the job of keeping us up before we go to the new stadium. We also need one that can keep us up for decades not just season to season. We all know SA isn't the one. He gives the impression he dislikes everything about the club.
I cannot bide to even watch his post game 'speeches' anymore as i can't stand his mono-toned voice coming out with tired excuse after tired excuse. It is never his fault. It is never his often dodgy substitutions or his choice of players on the bench. Cole and Jarvis were gone in January yet still get game time ahead of more deserving players. I'm over him and this season. Thank goodness we gained enough points in the 'purple patch' COYI

Purely on the basis he is getting bigger transfer budgets each season, more quality players are coming in.If a repeat of the last window is made there will definitely be improvement to the squad

Think Sam is stuck in his ways, what ever players come in he will still play the same way. If the board give him money i don't think it will be the type of player they would want. And if they buy the players there never get a game . No I think we are in need of a change of manger to go forward mate.

I agree we won't see better football,he loves the long ball ,targeting a big center forward ,I hate that style and he will buy players to suit it.What I'm saying ,the players that he goes for will be better quality, so it will improve the performances overall, but it will be the same Allardyce style. That's not the way forward for this club,we need a manager playing modern football who will take the club in a different direction playing football that entertains the fans .We had a taste of it earlier in the season but Allardyce is so set in his ways the old style came slowly back.Couldn't wait to bring Nolan and Carroll into the side, upset the rhythm of the team ,it has not been the same since.

Hook is another name for a ship's anchor: so to sling your hook meant to up anchor and sail away. Amazing what one can find on Google :-)

By his standards it is attacking football DB, far better than the dross we have witnessed over recent seasons.Apart from that early season form when it was a joy to watch, where attacks were coming from all directions, the team's attacking play has now become one dimensional ,out to the wide men and crosses into the box .I have nothing against that style, but when it consists of 80% of Westham's attack play there is something wrong. You could understand it more if Carrol was playing, but he's not,and Sakho is no center forward target man. There is no build up play coming through the middle any more,it's a case of getting the ball out to the wide men as quickly as possible and bang it into the box. There may be some cameos of Downing cutting in but it is all so predictable.Where has that early season attacking style gone,we know they can play it,that high tempo passing and pressing game.Allardyce can't seem to adapt his attacking style to suit his attackers thats his big weakness.

hit the nail on the head my friend particularly the point about tempo. Recent home games in particular have been predictable and snail like. Nolan, Noble and now Song are pedestrian and all three, yes three, are better than that!
