This is what we wished for

Submitted by Betty Swollox on Sat, 23/01/2016 - 23:40

Calling out all,"Be careful what you wish for" merchants. Where are you? This is what we wished for. Matching a ridiculously assembled team like City, who can bring on a £50 million sub. This was the best game I've paid to watch for years. It's why I hated last season, because I knew this is what I wanted to watch. Special mentions to Noble, Song and Kouyate, they made Yaya look like Kolo an Silva was anonymous. Delph and Navas look like a waste of money. Forget Jenkinson, Byram was brilliant. He walked into a game with Champions elect and looked composed and like he's been there for years. The best game THIS SEASON for Valencia he ran himself ragged. But to Payet. He's better than Di Canio, there I said it. His ability is ridiculous, he was the best player by far on the pitch. I want to watch him play because he is why people pay to go and watch games. He gave the ball away once today, formidable. Everyone was an 8/10 or above. The only exceptions were Jenkinson, poor again and looks like he wants out. Moses also was really poor. When he came on I thought, good substitution, he'll give Byram a bit of support and keep the ball higher up the pitch. He did neither and I can't blame Bilic because other than that because he was faultless. Hearing the fans sing players and the mangers names again is beautiful. I don't fear anybody and if we keep playing like this we will easily fill the OS. Welcome home West Ham, you've found your way back. #dontgiveupNev

Good post Betty, couldn't have put it better. We as West Ham fans knew what we wanted in terms of product on the field regardless of results. For the last year or two the board and back room staff have done some seriously good work. People who believed we should be careful what we wish for are just patronising bar stewards. As for byram it's early days yet but watching you tube clips he always provides support always want the ball and comfortable with it. I can't help thinking in time he ability will exceed a right back position. As for Payet he's the one people will pay big bucks to see on his own. That pass to Antonio when he was unbalanced was off the chart!

How will it " shut up his critics".?!

He had a decent game yesterday ( I suppose you will be wanting to overlook " the usual" hopelessly mistimed and no need to make lumge which brought his inevitable
booking).

Is that not the kind of performance he should be turning in EVERY WEEK?

As for " shutting up his critics" (of which there are plenty) I can't speak for them all but IT WONT MAKE A BLIND bit of diffence to me.

I will comment on what I see and pass " my opinion" on it as and when I feel the need to do so.

Thought he had some very good interplay (particularly with God Payet) and was part of a very industrious( and skilled) midfield my friend.

Also thought that lunge on(?) on the half way line ( when (?) was facing towards the dug out going nowhere)showed everything that is not so good about him ( as was the following up arguing about it)!!

Obviously in matches where you have " willing runners" such as Antonio and Valencia as well as the aforementioned Payet it makes it easier to make/find a forward pass and I feel this helped him enormously yesterday.

What also " makes it easier to shine" is if this happens from kick off and it did yesterday which also helped him get on the front foot.

As you know Betty ( although not everybody seems to but let's not go there) I HAVE NEVER critisize his efforts to the cause.

His " results" yes.

Having Song playing like he was actually fit/interested was obviously a huge benefit as well.

Delighted for him ( and us) that we not only got a great result but MORE IMPORTANTLY played some lovely football.

I hope to get the opportunity to get down for 1 more game before we leave our hallowed.

Hope all well with you and yours mate.

I agree with a lot of that. I think if we want to go to another level, I dont think he's good enough. Where we are today and with Song and Kouyate playing better, he can be a real influence. As an aside imagine if we had Sakho, Lanzini, Carroll and Payet fit all season. I think we'd be up there with Leicester. We're all good mate took the two boys yesterday and they loved it. Hope you're all well. You have to get to one game in this final season!

Do you know what Betty.

I actually think if you did a straw poll amongst the West Ham players you would be surprised how many of them would have him in the starting line up.

For me players need " characters" that they feel they can trust to give their all for the cause ( hopefully bringing with it an A game as well) but hugely respecting the " win at all costs" mentality.

I would bet my bottom dollar that Payet would actually be one of the first to have him in the team.

Part of the reason for why I have issues with him were demonstrated perfectly yesterday with that stupid lunge when he got booked. You might think something like that is " being picky" but when you play the way he does ( especially when he tires later in games) then if your walking a tightrope it cranks everything up.

Take the likes of Dechmachelis yesterday.
Poor and all as I think he is as a defender he made sure when he got booked it was for stopping a really dangerous situation developing.

There is merit in keeping him onboard for the reasons I mentioned but I find it a bit scary that as Captain he is almost guaranteed to start every game.

I really hope to make 1 more game as unfortunately when I came down for the WBA game my daughter couldn't make and I don't need to tell you the pleasure you derive from attending a game with your offspring.

Good to share views with you again.

Ouch! let's have me fingers back, only having a laugh,i take it you don't do banter ex spud, shall I book you in for a humor bypass, for the record i'm PROUD of nobes playing under five managers now they all must be wrong

As you can see clearly from above( but then again maybe you can't) I can " do banter".

Do I " do banter" with somebody who is critical of the fact that I dare criticise a West Ham player?

Simple answer.

No.

Do I " do banter with somebody who tries to validate their opinion".

Absolutely.

Thomas Repka played in several countries under many different managers and won untold International Caps including playing at World Cups.

Did that make him a good defender?!

Gary Been played for many managers and did the same thing.

Did you rate him?

Christian Dailly?

Et al , et al.

You missed Lucas Neill from that list of illustrious defenders!!
Thinking of LN, and comparisons with CJ, which of them has given the most penalties away in a season? CJ after that record maybe????

Would have to say I felt Neill had similar " qualities" to Noble Moore that being COMMITED, WHOLEHEARTED and WOULD FIGHT FOR THE CAUSE.

Without that you would sometimes have " a rudderless ship".

Great and all as the Payets of the world are could you imagine 11 of them in a team?!

I know that's taking things to extremes but you get the drift.

At the end of the day Neill played in the higher echelons of Prem football, played in many prestigious European matches and graced the stage at a World Cup so what do any of us know.

All we do is bump our gums as fans.

The more sensible try to base it on sound reasoning and justify their opinions.

Then there's.........

He definately fought for the cause and like Noble gave his all, but I suppose like Noble was guilty of to many a rash challenge. Correct me if I'm wrong but he gave away a penalty in said WC too?
Agree with the 11 Payet's in a team philosophy, you have to have players that graft for the team and do the thankless tasks. This basicaly allows the Payet's and Lanzini's to do their craft and get the plaudits.
I like Noble and glad he gets in the side, but like you wonder if it's sometimes at the expense of someone better particularly when he then goes out and makes a tackle that is so late it would have taken him another week to get near it!

Moore2come sorry to pick apart you post but the bit where you suggest noble possibly gets into the team at the expense of someone better doesn't ring completely true for me. Maybe it's a slip of your keyboard? For example I think most will say Lanzini is better than noble? But would you have him instead of noble? For me it goes back to the 11 payets argument. If the player doesn't do the same job as noble then mark isn't getting in the same team ahead of someone better. The closest to nobles role are probably Oxford or obiang. I know a lot of fans would include song and kouyate in that but for me they are different players. Not only that this season they are living on their previous name as their form has been no better or more consistent than nobles. I think in the next year or two Slav WILL look to replace noble with an all round better player, just ATM there are more pressing positions. Maybe in time byram could get that role? Certainly think Sam has more to offer us long term

No apologies necessary Red. I like Noble, you cannot fault his commitment to the cause and wears his heart on his sleeve. I think this season is looking one of his most solid and that has to be due to the increased quality around him. Like you say in the next couple of years he could be in line to be replaced. I think sometimes he twists and turns himself into a corner and gives the ball away or makes a careless back pass when it's almost easier to pass forward. It's this area that lets him down and gets my goat. I think Obiang will potentially replace him if we keep hold of him, but at the moment he's captain and doing enough to warrant his place.

Moore2 I think I'm in the same corner as you. I have defended noble many times and do believe he offers more than people realise. Having said that I also think he shouldn't be guaranteed a game and could be upgraded in time. One point I read was about leadership and if he us eventually replaced it has to be with someone who has leadership qualities. What we need is a Claude makalele type as a player but Patrick Viera in terms of leadership for a perfect upgrade.

Lucas Neil was a prime example of a player that was a rudder for us. With out him we drifted seriously close to the rocks

I know its only one game aswell. But The West Brom game IMO proved why you need Noble. We lacked leadership and discipline and for all the people who say we have other leaders I dont think we do. Reid has proved on more then one occasion he isnt captain material and after him I dont even think anybody comes close. I rate Noble a lot, having said that, I don't think it means he should start every game and definitely shouldnt start in a midfield 3 of of Kouyate and Obiang like he has a few times as it means we lack the movement for him to release the ball quickly and forward as everyone is static e.g the newcastle game, which then causes him to overplay it and lose it in a silly position. Its no surprise to me his best games this season along with others have been against the likes of Liverpool, City, Arsenal etc.. Also my point is proved imo by 1 game in particular the main one being the southampton game. First half he was average if that with nobody to pass to and a static team. Lanzini and Carroll come on, and the whole Dynamic changed and suddenly he was running the game. Just keeping everything ticking over well, winning vital tackles, and playing short simple forward passes to the players who actually started creating space. One more thing, for those wondering me and a few others wouldn't have Kouyate over Noble, look at the City's 2nd goal and look at Kouyate just walking back on the edge of THERE penalty area

I think another leader in the team wouldn't be a bad thing in the team as well, that's what true champions have. As for kouyate I can't quite understand the way he plays you would expect his natural instincts would be more on the defensive side

There were plenty of people on here too. Ridiculing those that wanted better football. I watched MOTD and heard Allardyce's immortal "respect the point" phrase, it sent shivers down my spine.

Yeah Betty I heard that nearly spat my drink out! Typical Sam. He also said the goals from his full back were down to good coaching. Admittedly there was a slight grin but he probably believes that

Not a regular poster so apologies if these comments appear somewhere else. I couldn't believe the Player Ratings in the Sun. Is the bloke doing them completely mad. Not one Hammers player above 7 out of 10. Our mid-field trio only given 6 each, but the City centre halves got 7. Two goal Valencia 7, but 2 goal Aguero 9 and Star Man. But the most ridiculous was Payett only got 7. I'm almost speechless.

It's lazy journalism and it's ripe this season. They're regurgitating last season's ratings without taking a look at what actually took place. Aguero? oh we know he's excellent give him a 9, he scored twice. Who's this Payet fella? give him a 7 sounds like he can do a few tricks. Let's not upset the big boys, give em all a minimum 7.

Thanks Fred I concur with how you put the Noble situation above. The big question of this thread is will any of the naysayers be brave enough to come out and admit they were wrong? I won't hold my breath

Always a big advocate of the squad game you see betty. I love Nobes as much as anyone but like with any player, he needs to be rotated depending on the game, especially to keep him fresh as his fitness levels are by far the best in the team. However I think Bilic realises theres nobody else whos a suitable captain. Could be worse though, could be stuch with Nolan playing with 10 men every game
