Like him or loathe him you cannot begrudge David Moyes' moment of joy, the much maligned Hammers manager, often portrayed as a cartoon zombie, 'ressurected' the fettid and rotting cadava of a team that he inherited from the previous 'daddy of them all' zombie on watch Manuel Pllegrini. There were two exceptions to the bloated imbalanced squad that Moyes had to motivate and mould after taking over the club's management for the second time, his two acquisitions during the January transfer window, Jarred Bowen and Tomas Soucek.

Bowen and Soucek both put in comprehensively solid performances during the Irons 3-1 crucial Barclays Premier League victory over fellow relegation strugglers Watford, the midfielder and winger are nailed on starters in the Hammers first team and played as if they were always meant to be there, with the former having set up a spectacular header for the latter who added to Antonio's well taken strike.

Speaking of the spectacular, the much sought after Declan Rice probably added a couple of Mill to his valuation with a dominant display capped of with a 'worldie' 33 yard belter of a goal that will give Foster nightmares for some time to come! Rice's goal followed a Michail Antonio opener which was swiftly added to by Soukec's goal.

3-0 up before half time was a gratifying score line, but a portent of what was to come was when a 'Nigel Pearson hair dryered squad' took to the field in the second half and promptly scored the sort of goal that teams with a distinct goal advantage tend to concede, as did West Ham. Suddenly all the euphoria evaporated, and memories of the 4-3 defeat to Wimbledon after leading 3-0 at half time came flooding back, fortunately heads didn't drop and David Moyes' team rallied to the cause and saw out a convincing, albeit nervous victory over a Watford team that virtually guaranteed another season, hopefully less traumatic, in the Barclays Premier League.

Almost lost in the hussle and bustle of the second half, was an effort on goal by Sebastian Haller, who had repaced the industrious Bowen, which with almost his first touch would have been a truly spectacular goal, unfortunatley Foster saved extremely well from the Irons record signing.

For a battling Watford team the prospect looks bleak, as soon as their goal scorer, captain and talisman Troy Deeney, had to leave the field due to a persistent knee issue, the visitors looked doomed, they face an away trip to Manchester City and the a final home game against Arsenal.

We did mention in a previous article that West Ham could end up confirming or consigning all three of the teams eventually relegated in three of their last four matches. Bournemouth and Vila would need to win their remaining two games by a twelve or fifteen goal margin respectively to halt Hammers top flight tenure so...Another season like the last will be too much to bare for many fans, particularly those of a nervous disposition, another year, another fear. I think they will stick with Moyes surely they have to, he has been pretty awful but he has done exactly what he was asked to do.
I just hope if he does have a bad start the Chairmen get rid quickly.
Well done to the players for being professional tonight, I would have hated another bum squeaking game or two had we lost tonight.

Pump Up The Volume-But Not Smith!

Broadcasters have been asked to increase sound levels for this evening's match between West Ham United and Watford FC at the London Stadium, it is felt that a game of such importance warrants additional crowd noise as the encounter would have provoked 'intense' verbality had it been held in front of a 60,000 crowd as it would have been pre covid-19.

Although the 'atmospheric' volume can be a bit of a 'marmite' experience, one element that a huge amount of Hammers fans are interested in is who are the match commentators going to be? Surely they CANNOT use the ultimatley biased, Hammers hating and deeply jealous of what players own now, Alan Smith can they?

Smith's contempt for West Ham United is based on a failed transfer that he was a make weight in, ultimatley the deal fell through and he was left out of contract and out of pocket, hence his attitude. Fair enough, footballers are human after all, but why would broadcasters inflict his particularly vitriolic assessment of the Irons on the very people who are paying to watch the match? It makes no sense, maybe Watford suporters will appreciate Smith's comments, IF the Broadcasters are foolish enough to persist in using his unique 'talent', about their opponents for the evening, but we have a feeling his whining tones grate with most listeners apart from a hard core of gooners living in the past!

We understand broadcasters are loathe to have supporters or ex players of particiapating teams commentating on the game, a jingoistic blatherer can be excrutiating, especially for the neutral or the less represented club. However using a 'proper' commentator who has no particular allegiance to either of the teams playing is absolutely fine, it adds to the occasion, but to use a sad old ex-pro with his own comprehensive agenda serves to detract from what should be as an inclusive experience, not an excuse to be miserable! - Ed

Forward The Six (Five) Hundred!

Tonight's game against Watford has taken on almost biblical importance for many west ham fans who were born to be claret and blue, results were mixed for the other teams down in the mire and a clearer picture of what is required to survive is emerging. Three points from the remaining three games would guarantee safety irrespective of any other team's results, Watford at home, away to Manchester United for the penultimate game and finally the home game against Aston Villa.

Watford are never easy to play against, they are fast and furious and very physical if they feel the need, they do have the ability to 'bully' light weight teams and are led by Troy Deaney when they go in to 'battle'. So with that in mind David Moyes will have to make at least one crucial selection for the match, despite not having much in the tank captain Mark Noble must start against the Hornets.

We have been very critical of Noble, but tonight if he starts he will be playing in his 500th game for West Ham, that doesn't mean he should be starting the match for sentimental reasons, far from it. There are some fans and pundits who fear Noble's lack of pace will be exposed by what can be a very fluid Watford attack, however his leadership qualities will most likely be required, particularly in the opening exchanges.

“It’s harder to be at a club for that length of time nowadays,” Moyes told a news conference on Thursday. “He’s showed a great level of commitment to this club. He’s captain, a really important player for us, and I think West Ham should consider themselves lucky to have a really good player and a really good man at the club. To get 500 games for any club, you have to give him great credit. He’s been a one-club man and served the club incredibly well, still leading the group and playing very well. We’ve had some great players here like that — Billy Bonds and Bobby Moore, Trevor Brooking.”

Essentially the manager knows the importance of tonight's game, and knows that Noble's leadership skills will obviate his shortcomings on the pitch, at least for a while, he can always be substituted when his 'legs have gone' thanks to the five subs ruling and extended drinks breaks. A draw or a defeat, whilst being unwelcome, would not be the end of things, there would still be six points to play for. Admittedly the game against on fire Manchester United has been written off by most as a no brainer loss, but at this stage in the season anything is possible, as has been revealed by some of the results other fellow strugglers have achieved against 'top' opposition.

Three games, three points needed, forward the Six Hundred for the 500th game. - Ed

So we survived by the skin of our teeth(full of bravado eh:-)) we have no money for the transfer market whats Moyes gonna do? ruthless and maybe unpopular decisions need to be made and some radical changes to the scouting team errrr we have one dont we? ahhh yes sullivan jnr.....anyway for me the following players need to be moved on wheelchair/Anderson/Lanzini/arthur/cressy/Balbuena/Reid/.....coming in is of course Soucek deal made permanent him and Rice look a good combo in the middle of the park i would keep Fornals/Haller because i do not believe either player has been utilized properly by either manager Haller yes looks disinterested and pissed off but he has never been a lone striker look how different he played when Antonio was put up alongside him in the southampton game he was making runs linking up play feeling much more comfortable but if Moyes decides he is not the answer and sells him then for me if Fulham do not come up we have to take Mitrovic like Antonio he would provide a physical presence up front and Cairney from them....i do not want to see anymore journeymen looking for a last big payday or so called big names lets find players who can for the most part remain fit and can play with some pace and passion.

Be Careful What You Wish For-Hull City

In January of this year Hull city FC were well set for a play off place, they were eighth in the Championship and they just needed an extra push for the chance to re-join the Barclays Premier League, so what happened to their charge? Put quite simply, money, but here's the rub, in an attempt to replenish their bank account temporarily, Hull City made the cardinal error of not being content with what they had.

And so it came to pass...having relied heavily on one player to get them where they were, from a goal scoring perspective why would they then sell their source of goals? But sell him they did, consequently Jarred Bowen will be lining up alongside his new West Ham team mates for Friday's crucial game against Watford while Hull City now face the very real prospect of relegation to the third tier of English football. The £22 Million Hull received for Bowen is 'small potatoes' compared with the riches on offer in the top flight, it is a sale they will regret for many years.

As has been seen on many occasions, relegation from the Barclays Premier League isn't the end of clubs and their supporters suffering, Sunderland are a prime example of what can happen as they dropped down from the top flight to the third in consecutive seasons. If the Irons need focusing a glance in the Black Cats direction might focus their minds.

The Irony that it was Wigan, another poorly run club that has just entered administration with it's consequent 12 point deduction, that beat Hulll City EIGHT nil will not have escaped the attention of long suffering Latics fans. Sunderland Wigan and Hull are all examples of clubs who were once on the top flight that are now finding it nigh on impossible to get even close to a return to the 'promised land' that is the Barclays Premier League.

If David Moyes men need incentivizing, which they should not, then they need only look at what happens when your club goes down the 'worm hole'. - Ed

So, All Quiet On The West Ham Front Until Friday!

nevillenixon's picture
Submitted by nevillenixon on Wed, 15/07/2020 - 11:37

For the players the days off between last Saturday's lunchtime dismantling of Norwich City FC and the crucial Friday night so called £100 Million shoot out against fellow strugglers Watford have been warmly welcomed, not so for the West Ham United fans though. The eagerly anticipated Friday night confrontation will go a long way to decide whether either or both clubs survive or thrive in the fight to stay in the Barclays Premier League.

A draw or a defeat would not be the end of the world, but to inversely paraphrase Winston Churchill "it could be the beginning of the end!" With a penultimate game away to in form Manchester United, and a final, what looks like critical game at home to Aston Villa, the stakes couldn't be much higher.

We have, as have many other Hammers sites, discussed the utlisation of the players available in order for the final push to try and get over the relegation finishing line. David Moyes has a full squad to select from with the exception of Felipe Anderson and Robert Snodgrass, the former will be available for the Watford game having recovered from a slight hamstring injury, the latter could make the squad for the unenviable trip to Old Trafford having progressed well with his recovery from a back injury.

Referring to Anderson David Moyes said "I saw him jogging yesterday but he won’t be available for the game tomorrow, Felipe. He got a very slight grade one hamstring tweak which will normally keep you out ten days or 14 days, he’s not had it before so we hope it is not serious and we can have him back shortly." he was not so optimistic with regards to Robert Snodgrass “We’re still waiting on Robert, he’s done a little bit of light training but wasn't available for the Norwich game but I’m hoping that we might get him back for the trip to Manchester United and for the final game of the season against Aston Villa".

The home game against Watford will only be screened on Sky subscription channels as opposed to the free to air Pick TV channel, it is also possible to buy a day pass from Now TV to view the match, if your nerves can stand it! Those who do watch will do so with a mixture of anxiety and trepidation that will probably only be matched by the final game against Villa, stress levels through the air would be an understatement.

The fact is that David Moyes and his players have the club's destiny firmly within their grasp at the moment, and their performances alone can guarantee safety, they do not currently have to rely on other team's results, that of course might change on Friday, but even then redemption is still possible. The players will need big cajones, the fans will need even bigger amounts of whatever gets them through the night! - Ed
