The Football Association said it would be seeking observations from West Ham as well as awaiting the match referee Lee Mason's report before considering what action to take, but with The Premier League joining in the condemnation of events it will only be a matter of time before 'firm action' is taken by the FA.
The possible sanctions range from a hefty fine through to forcing West Ham to play at least one match at home behind closed doors, that would be the Southampton game due to be played on March the 31st, further sanctions could include a 'suspended' points deduction in order to try to ensure there are no repeats of Saturday's unpleasant scenes.
The threat of further sanctions will remain against West Ham until the season's end, with one FA 'insider' saying that Hammers' were going to get a 'good kicking' for consistently breaching it's match day guide lines, the Premier League in conjunction with the FA have 'representatives' at every Premier League fixture, they are the ones with the puffer jackets emblazoned with a lions head that makes them look like generic Hull City supporters!
For quite some time there has been a bit of an agenda regarding West Ham and the London Stadium, whether it be Mayor Sadiq Khan or a Tory back bencher looking for publicity banging on about the cost to the tax payer for the White Elephant Stadium, either way the public has been led to believe that West Ham United got a 'special deal'. It is now obvious that moving from the Boleyn Ground was not the groundbreaking (excuse the pun) exercise it was supposed to be, in fact it has had such a negative effect on the club that Hammers' should be paid for taking on such a monstrosity in order to spare the government's blushes.
All the resentment that has been simmering has finally been let out the bag, and if fans think that this is the last of it then they will be very disappointed, this is going to run and run. Everyone and everything that is negative will be heaped upon the club, queues will form of axe grinders and don't be surprised if Sheffield United take action to ensure that they alone can hold the mantle of destroying a club efficiently! The London Stadium move was supposed to be the beginning of something great, not a protracted witch hunt, it was supposed to put West Ham United firmly in the spot light and raise the club's profile. Well it's certainly done that, but not in the way it was meant to, when you put yourself on a pedestal be prepared for some one to try and come and knock you off!
West Ham is a club you are generally 'born' in to, the new generation of fans may never know that once upon a time the club was virtually every opposition supporters favourite team, with a few obvious exceptions, it is to be genuinely hoped that the future generation's legacy will not be permanently destroyed by the London Stadium shenanigans. - Ed
RIP West Ham United. It was a slow and long funeral that started at the Boleyn. But finally we can lay our old, traditional and great club to rest. The brand has changed, the name will change soon and the ethos and mentality of the club as long gone. All that’s left is a Rich man’s MK Dons. Screaming and crying children, the old and disabled fearing for their safety and a group of fans totally at their wits end as what has happened. Some of the actions today were appalling, some of the sentiment though was justified. There will always be those that jump on the hooligan bandwagon, but when controlled the message needs to come across. We can’t realistically shout sack the board because they can’t sack themselves. They can’t leave till someone buys them. So all we can do, is leave. If it pains people and it has me to do this, because of loyalty and love for the club, then think of it like this. This isn’t our club anymore. The last puppet that they could use was our great Sir Trev. That didn’t even save them. Sullivan to Brady, “Let’s get Trevor in the stands with us that will temper the disenchanted”. No sorry not enough fellas. Everyone stay away from the ground! Show them who the club really is. For years now the game has been taken from the fans, recklessly. Show them that without us it doesn’t work. I won’t be going back this season I’ve had enough of the ground, branding bollox, team, manager, owners, prices, journey, shit security, do I need to go on? In all my 35 plus years supporting, including Macari, Roeder, Grant, Terry Brown, Eggy, countless relegations, Stockport away in the cup, to name but a few. This is the lowest time I’ve ever felt about my club and I’m glad my old grandad (RIP Pops) who gave me West Ham is not alive to see it!
The packed London (ironic not iconic) Stadium crowd expected their team to put a shift in, and during the first half they did despite Joe Hart looking like a rabbit stuck in the headlights. His selection raised more than a few eyebrows and his name was met with boos when the team was read out, he looked hopelessly lacking in confidence, and that feeling spread, firstly among the crowd but as time wore on it got to his team mates as well.
Hammers were as bad in the second half as they were good in the first and Burnley just ran riot, as soon as the first allowed goal went in Hammers disintegrated allowing Burnley's sub two score an additional two goals within minutes of each other to send the vast majority of the crowd home early leaving the stadium virtually empty apart from the jubilant away fans and some hard core very angry Hammers fans chanting 'sack the board'.
The worst part of a day that was supposed to be a tribute to Bobby Moore was the action of several mindless so called fans, just as West Ham were about to kick off following Burnley's first goal a mindless moron or two invaded the pitch, their continued presence served as a complete distraction and only served to give Burnley the advantage of re-organising. It is common knowledge that teams are most vulnerable when they have just scored, so any chance of a swift come back was thwarted by the pitch invasion.
Unfortunately one image that is bound to appear will be that of Hammers' captain Mark Noble taking matters in to his own hands or fists actually and punched and kicked one of the 'fans' that had evaded capture by the lackadaisical stewards, he was angry and rightly so because by the time things had died down it was Burnley who were in the ascendancy. The crowd's anger continued undissipated with large sections towards the end of the match assembling near the directors box that eventually forced David Sullivan and David Gold to leave only Sir Trevor Brooking in the executive seats! There were also some fans having a running fight with stewards as they attempted to 'get at' the owners despite the large number of young fans in the proximity.
The club have issued the following :
West Ham United club statement: "West Ham United have immediately launched a full and thorough investigation into the incidents which marred the second half of today's match and are committed to taking decisive and appropriate action. "An emergency meeting has been called with all London Stadium stakeholders. There will be no further comment at this time."
This is not the end, but it seems like the beginning of the end, dark days indeed. - Ed
Fans are aghast that David Moyes has chosen what is probably the most important game of the season to replace goal keeper Adrian San Miguel with England flop Joe Hart, admittedly Adrian has conceded four goals in each of his last two games.
Surely his defence or lack of it is mainly to blame, bringing back Joe Hart is a strange decision and one that shows a benign softness from the normally granite logic shown by Moyes, it is hardly a secret that Joe Hart is in the last chance saloon ahead of the FIFA World Cup finals in Russia, his form has been on a downward spiral since Pep Guardiola sent him on loan to Torino from Manchester City.
Right from the off things went badly when Hart turned up at The London Stadium, it is still difficult to come to any conclusion other than the fact that his abilities have waned and that his peak has been reached leaving only a downward progression such was his inadequacy in the early matches. It initially appeared that Hammers' had been thrown off kilter by having to play their first four games away from home but things did not improve even when the venue switched to the ironic London Stadium, the goals kept flowing, for the opposition!
It is difficult to arrive at any conclusion other than that Adrian has been made the fall guy for the recent 4-1 drubbings against Liverpool and Swansea, is Hart any better? Adrian is a firm crowd favourite despite the odd moment of madness and because of his popularity fans are very understanding when he concedes whereas they are not so sympathetic when it comes to Hart who many see as a mercenary who doesn't give a hoot about West Ham and it's fans. The latter might seem disingenuous but the truth is Hart is desperate to represent England again but faces stiff competition from all the young guns on the block, particularly Pickford. Hart would gladly have left during the transfer window to help his England cause had a move materialised but it didn't because David Moyes wanted to retain Hart's services.
This bold decision could come back to haunt David Moyes and if things don't go well it will do little to extend the temporary 'love in' that he experienced when the team had climbed from the relegation zone to a respectable 11th place before the recent poor run of results which sees Hammers right back in it! Hopefully the return of Angelo Ogbonna will offset the negativity surrounding Hart's selection, but the Burnley fowards will be licking their lips at the prospect of 'testing' a non match fit goal keeper, particularly one who's confidence will be brittle. Perhaps Hart's defence will be aware of his situation enough to NOT pass back to him all the time because that course of action will get the crowd on his back straight away, whether fans agree with his selection or not they are going to have to be at their most supportive if Hammers are to get anything from Sean Dyche's 'mildly arrogant' Burnley side. - Ed
It seems that every match preview over the last few months has hinted at 'six pointer' status, this Saturday's match (Yes that rarity of a home match on Saturday kicking off at 3pm) against Burnley is not a six pointer on account of the fact that Burnley are so much further up the table that they are realistically unreachable even at this stage of the season.
Six pointer or not the reality is this match is crucial to West Ham United, with the toxic fall out of the failed March in March added to by the already toxic atmosphere at the ironic and still sponsor less London Stadium the team are really going to have to put a shift in if they don't want the crowd on their backs.
The paradoxical nature of most football supporters is a case study, particularly those whose teams are doing badly! They want their team to do well, but find themselves shouting and screaming at their team's ineptness which of course makes the team play even worse, what can be done to alter things? Not a lot really, but fans must try to put 'other issues' aside and get behind the team because despite it's shortcomings the London Stadium can 'rock', and this Saturday it needs to rock and roll if Hammers are to get anything from Sean Dyche's well drilled team, it is possible but it needs a minor miracle.
How will David Moyes set his team up? He will more than likely park the bus in midfield in order to avoid being over run, particularly in the early stages of the match, much will depend on how many of the 'walking' wounded are available. Angelo Ogbonna's return is a massive bonus, without him the team looks toothless, he is the lynch-pin that stops the midfield from being compromised. The ginger pele that is James Collins is also available and Moyes may well bank on the Wales defenders experience and willingness to put his body on the line.
Antonio or Hernandez?
Given the importance of countering Burnley's lightening fast attack Mikael Antonio may well start to add some zip up front, but he will need to be taken off around the sixty minute mark because although he is a proper 'road runner' he just doesn't have the stamina to last the whole match and is to be seen almost breathing out his back side after most of his forward runs. In what will definitely be a physical match Antonio looks like a far better option than Hernandez who does spend a bit too much time complaining about 'assertive' tackles rather than get on with the job. Funnily enough you can see just how Chico and Ant get on when they try Betway's Esports Challenge for the first time! See on youtube
The cherry on the cake (sic) for David Moyes is that the bastion of refereeing restraint, Lee Mason will be the man in black! Fans will remember his sending off of Marko Arnoutovic in the game against Southampton which does not bode well, Mason has issued three straight reds this season and issued close on fifty yellow cards, 'Elbows' will have to be on his best behaviour but we fear this match is unlikely to remain 11 v 11 for it's entirety, and given Lady Luck's recent attention or lack of it to West Ham you can guarantee if someone is given their marching orders that it will be a home player, it's the way things have been going!
Both sets of fans wear claret and blue, hopefully the Burnley players make some school boy errors and pass to West Ham players by mistake at The London Stadium! Clutching at straws? - Ed
