Kitty Empty & The Cupboard Is Bare- Do You Care?

As we approach the first games of project restart there has been the inevitable surge in transfer rumours, West Ham United feature in plenty of them, it is quite astonishing to see some of the club's 'supposed' potential transfer targets. We have been linked with a whole bunch of them, from Adam Lallana and Thiago Silva through to Sami Khedira and numerous other over priced, over paid, past it players, and let's face it, Hammers' hierarchies past and present have taken that criteria to another level!

The latest spurious transfer target is supposedly Chelsea midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko, the 25 year old has been loaned out almost the entire time since he was signed for £40 Million in 2017, he spent the 2018/19 campaign on loan at AC Milan before being shipped to Monaco the following year, Bakayoko is surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge, and he doesn't see eye to eye with Blues manager Frank Lampard.

It is claimed that West Ham are in ‘pole position’ to sign the midfielder, with a Le 10 Sport report stating that the player could be available this summer for a fee of around £31.4 Million, but that Chelsea want 'the ful whack!' AC Milan with whom he was most recently on loan with chose not to take up their option to sign the French international even at a reduced fee. There must be an issue with the player if he has been doing the rounds on loan but has no one has ever taken up the option to make his loan permanent.

Apparently West Ham have also made an approach to sign Liverpool right-back Nathaniel Clyne, with Jeremy Ngakia about to leave at the end of the month, as well as Pablo Zabaleta at the end of the season, leaving only Ryan Fredericks, who has failed to impress since joining West Ham on a free transfer in the summer of 2018 and youngster Ben Johnson to cover the right back berth. Unfortunately mainly due to a series of injuries, Fredericks cannot be relied upon, but neither can Clyne, in fact Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is not even prepared to offer the 29 year old an extended deal until the end of the season.

Clyne joined Liverpool from Southampton in the summer of 2015 for around £15.8 Million, he will be able to leave Anfield on a free transfer at the end of this month, he has been lower down the pecking order to Trent Alexander-Arnold since the youngster burst onto the scene at Anfield. Clyne has experienced terrible injury problems over the past few years, so some with a gallows humour will suggest West Ham are always in need of another injury prone, ageing player on a massive salary!

There is however a certain 'small caveat', or indeed large Elephant in the room when it comes to all this transfer speculation, put quite simply the club is broke, there are no funds available and any chance of recouping large tracts of money through player sales have gone out the window with player values halved as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. David Sullivan will keep 'his investment' afloat by 'loaning' the club the funds needed to keep operating, but without the TV money that would have arrived by now, and of course the £24 Million of season ticket revenue which would have been received, the club is in no way capable of 'dipping' in to the market in any way shape or form.

The Kitty is empty, and the Cupboard is bare, try to get used to it, it's better not to care! - Ed

New Look Young Hammers?

nevillenixon's picture
Submitted by nevillenixon on Thu, 11/06/2020 - 11:45

Sometimes the news coming out from the London stadium can be confusing to say the least, one moment we are being told that manager David Moyes wants to assemble a lean mean fighting machine of young ambitious players full of energy and desire, the next minute word emanating from the 'Bowl of Misery' is that the club are looking to sign the likes of Adam Lallana and Thiago Silva, who have a combined age of 67 years!

Thankfully fans can dispel their fears on that one, because if yesterday's friendly against QPR is anything to go by then Moyes has stuck to his guns by using a raft of young players, including super hot prospect Xande Silva who has returned from a serious stomach injury that required surgery, Silva has picked up where he left off and is banging goals in for fun.

Worryingly though, Moyes did also select the perennially and perpetually injured Jack Wilshere for the game as well, 'wheelchair' seems to have come through the match uninjured so fair play to him and his manager, however between the lines Moyes' admiration for Wilshere might also have something to do with 'bumping up his value ahead of transferring him, as Wilshere is about to enter the final year of his incredibly lucrative contract which sees him being paid DOUBLE club captain Mark Noble's wages.

News has emerged that club stalwart Angelo Ogbonna has picked up an injury and is not likely to be fit in time for the first match of the Barclays Premier League project restart against Wolves at the London Stadium on the 20th of June, the 'Angel' was a stand out performer ahead of the League's suspension and is in the running to become Hammer of the Year, so losing him is not good news, however the club have a like for like replacement in the form of 'the General' AKA Fabian Bulbuena.

Balbuena started life at the London Stadium 'on fire', but he was rushed back from injury during Manuel Pellegrini's ill fated spell in charge, and both he and his centre back partner Issa Diop found themselves being further down the pecking order, being in and out of the team regularly. The cracks had already started to appear in Pellegrini's game plan, or more accurately, the lack of one, and so he 'tinkered' with the starting line up which meant splitting up what had once been a superb partnership between the 'General' and the "Beast' as Spurs and ex-Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho described Diop.

Fortunately Moyes has time to work with the Centre back pairing in order to get them singing from the same sheet, and hopefully get them to rediscover their understanding they had when they first played together for West Ham United. Diop is young and Balbuena is at his peak being 28 years old, along with the likes of Jarred Bowen, Xande Silva, Declan Rice, Grady Diangana, Ben Johnson and a whole set of new youngsters coming through, they can form the back bone of a team 'with ' LEGS.

Time and again, particularly at the London Stadium where the very nature and size of the pitch lends itself towards fast attacking football, an ageing Hammers team has been over run by more energetic opposition, especially in the last ten minutes of each game, with players who have energy to burn this could just be the turning point that many fans have dreamed of for ages, but as with most thing West Ham, the caveat is " be careful what you wish for"! - Ed

Hugill Played Against Us!

In a behind closed doors friendly at The London stadium a 'West Ham Selection' ran out comfortable 4-1 victors over Queens Park Rangers, the match, which to all intents and purposes was essentially a training session between two sets of players rather than a fiercely competitive game as some 'friendlies' can be, was still howver played with considerable energy from both sides.

Both managers were happy with the morning fixture as they were able to utilise their entire squads available to them, which was quite unique because normally some players return for pre-season training while others who have been involved in International tournaments or previous club commitments are usually given additional time off to recover both mentally and physically.

Although there is no official list of who played for which team and when, it is known that QPR Boss Mark Warburton was able to select all his current first team squad, this would mean that Jordan Hugill, who recently extended his loan deal from the Irons to finish the season with QPR, and who might possibly be involved in a swap deal for young QPR star Eberechi Eze.

Word is that Hugill enjoyed some banter with the Hammers' lads and particularly with David Moyes, the man who brought him to the London Stadium, his transfer was spectacularly unsuccessful and he was farmed out on loan to Boro and then subsequently The Hoops where he has enjoyed a relatively happy and productive time.

FA rules forbid an on loan player from playing against his parent club, however as the match was deemed as uncompetitive no rules were broken, and thankfully neither were any bones! It is always worrying, particularly for a club with such a terrible injury history as West Ham United, when players return from a lengthy lay off, because the plethora of injuries from minor niggles to major afflictions are there waiting to happen, just a swift sprint too quickly, an errant tackle, or even getting studs caught in the immaculate playing surfaces that are the norm nowadays.

Still, it is good for the team to get a game under the belt without the scrutiny of the TV companies or media, there will be plenty of that once the wall to wall coverage of 'project re-start' hits the screens and begins the process of making the viewing public have 'oblong eyes'! -Ed

Moyes Says No Oldies So Why Lallana Or Silva?

nevillenixon's picture
Submitted by nevillenixon on Wed, 10/06/2020 - 11:37

West Ham fans will almost be bored with hearing about it, but entirely agree with manager David Moyes regarding future player recruitment, his desire for a young, hungry and principally British team full of players with panache has become his mantra. Fed up with a 'bunch of over paid Johnny Foreigners' who lack the desire for a fight, the ex-Manchester United manager is steeling his troops for the remaining nine games of the Barclays Premier League in order to try and ensure survival in the battle to avoid relegation. So why on earth, if the club does maintain it's top flight status, would Moyes be in any way interested in either Adam Lallana or Thiago Silva?

Recent reports suggest that Adam Lallana and Thiago Silva or both are on the Hammers' radar for next season, and while they may be fine footballers, at the ages of 32 and 35 respectively, both are way off the Moyes template mark. Even if the worst happened and the club was relegated, there would still be a unique opportunity to 'finally' get back to having a young first team, fans have had enough of watching ageing overpaid 'imports' trolling around as they run down their lengthy and extremely lucrative contracts.

By studying the statistics, football analyst Ian Hooper has come up with some interesting talking points, namely that West Ham United conceded more goals in the last ten minutes of games than any other Premier League team, time and again the team were over run by more energetic youthful performers who made some of the Iron's stalwarts look like pensioners! One exception although he is leaving when the season finally concludes is Pablo Zabaleta, in his day he was an astonishing full back for Manchester City, he arrived at the London Stadium and gave his absolute all, but in the end time waits for no man, and his lack of pace began to get cruelly exposed.

Zabaleta was the exception though, because there is a lengthy list of 'past its' who have came, saw and then sh*t on the club, we include Arnautovic in that category because he always looked injured! If David Moyes is allowed to build from the base up, there is every possibility he could be laying the foundations of a team that could prosper for years to come.

Opinion: In order for Moyes to implement his plans, some players will have to be moved on, not an easy task during or even post the Covid-19 Pandemic, the likes of Sanchez and Roberto are primed to leave along with Zaba, and originally Jack Wilshere was being lined up for departure, however as we have previously mentioned, young Jack has one of the best agents in the World, no one else could have negotiated the deals Wilshere has received could they? Well, his agent has gone a step further, we are not sure how, perhaps it involved putting something suspicious in Moyes' morning cuppa, but he has seemingly managed to convince Moyes not only to start his player, but has inferred that the club should EXTEND Wilshere's contract before it reaches its final 12 months!

Hopefully the drugs will wear off soon, David Moyes' brain will return to normal and he will distance himself from any association with PSV's Silva and Liverpool's Lallana. - Ed

Moyes Ready-Is The Medical Team?

nevillenixon's picture
Submitted by nevillenixon on Tue, 09/06/2020 - 17:12

David Moyes in his first spell as the club’s manager two seasons ago saved the club from a precarious position steering them safely away from the dreaded relegation zone, and as a reward had his services promptly dispensed with in order to be replaced by the 'luxurious' management style of Manuel Pellegrini. On Saturday week against Wolves at the London Stadium, he has pick up the pieces from where he left off, the team had started to gain impetus in the last couple of games, although that had not been mirrored in the actual results achieved, there are nine remaining games of this once in a generation or even lifetime situation.

Many West Ham fans had hoped that the season would end prematurely which would have guaranteed the club's top flight safety, such was the team’s predicament when coronavirus forced football to shut down in March. However 'project re-start' has seen to that, so the Irons, in 16th place but on the same 27 points total as the 3rd from bottom club Bournemouth, will have to play a lot of games in a very short space of time* to ensure their Barclays Premier League Premier League future while obeying strict public health requirements, and playing in empty stadiums.

David Moyes has been around the block a few times in over twenty years of top flight management and believes that his team are ready and have the desire to ensure their Premier League survival and write a new chapter for the club. “We’re ready to play now,” Moyes is quoted as saying. “I do feel as if the preparation has gone as well as we could have hoped. The attitude of the players has been fantastic. In some ways lockdown has been good because the way we’ve had to work with the players has allowed me to get to know them a bit better. I had come into the club during January, with a lot of games scheduled and with little time to really work with them on the training pitch. Physically, the players are in good condition and I also think they have enjoyed it as well, because we’ve tried to make it as varied and enjoyable as we can."

Exactly the kind of words you would expect from a manager trying to steady the ship, he should stick a copy of his 'speech' on the dressing room wall, because for once he actually has a full squad to choose from, with the exception of Winston Reid who is on loan to Atlanta in the USA. Unfortunately just when things were starting to look rosy, alarming news that has shocked and gobsmacked many fans emanating from the London Stadium is that Moyes intends to 'deploy' a resurgent Jack Wilshere as his 'secret weapon' in the club's bid for survival, and start him for the first crucial game against high flying Wolves, either it is a 'cunning plan' set out to deceive the opposition, or David Moyes has lost his marbles as a result of his enforced prolonged period of footballing inactivity!

If for some reason the manager does want to play Wilshere, for the love of God just bring him off the bench for a cameo role that might hook a buyer for his services when the new transfer window opens, the stats don't lie there is a 90% Jack will get injured sooner rather than later, and while it is true that he has the ability to unlock a team with his supreme skill, he cannot be allowed to deprive Tomas Soucek or Pablo Fornals their berth in the team. It would be sheer madness, but then again, this is West Ham United, a location renowned for normally sane people who arrive and then lose their senses! - Ed

PS: * “I would also like to mention the staff here and particularly the medical team. The amount of work our medical head Richard Collinge and his staff have had to work through, in terms of process and protocols, has been a real challenge, but they have toiled tirelessly to ensure the training ground meets all the requirements of the Premier League".

It is to be hoped that keeping Coid-19 at bay is their main occupation. - Ed

'Nbelieveable'

Once bitten twice shy is a well known expression regarding making the same mistake twice, however making one mistake doesn't necessarily mean it has to be followed by another, it all depends on the circumstances of the situation. The Hammers' hierarchy had their fingers well and truly burned when they handed out a £20,000 per week contract to rising star Reece Oxford, a player who's form and commitment 'fell off the cliff' as soon as he was in receipt of such a ludicrous of money at such a young age, his career since went steadily down hill to the point where he eventually joined Augsburg on a salary that is little over £6,000 per week!

When asked about the latest 'rising star', Jeremy Ngakia, angling for a massive contract West Ham manager David Moyes said he is “surprised and disappointed” at teenage defender Ngakia’s decision to leave the club when his contract expires at the end of this month,
Deptford born Ngakia, 19, was handed his Premier League debut by Moyes in January and subsequently made three more senior appearances, unfortunately as a result of having his 'ear bent' by his greedy agents has turned down a new offer, reputed to be worth around £5,000 a week, and will not sign a temporary extension to the end of this season.

“We are really surprised and disappointed that Jeremy is not going to stay at West Ham,” admitted Moyes. “We like him a lot, we’ve given him his debut and I’m a manager who has done that many times in my career, including Wayne Rooney, Ross Barkley, Jordan Pickford and others, Jeremy is another one and I feel he is making a mistake choosing not to stay with us. We’ve trusted him in big games and everyone likes him at the club. I also feel it’s a kick in the teeth for the academy, because they have developed a player for the first team and he’s not going to stay. We’re also really disappointed with his decision not to stay beyond June the 30th.

An understandably angry Moyes continued,"I don’t agree with that and I also think it’s something the Premier League should not allow to happen, because it means the season is not starting and finishing in the same way, there’s nothing we can do about that, though, and we are still working with him. We like him, we want him to feel he’s been given the best service we can give and maybe there’s still a little hope that we can change his mind.” Clubs have until June 23 to agree short-term deals for players whose contracts are due to expire at the end of the month and Moyes added: “We haven’t given up all hope of Jeremy realising he has got it wrong, but I have to say he has told me directly that it is not his choice to stay.”

This situation leaves the club in a quandary, on closer analysis Ngakia's agents are only trying to do what is best for their client, which is what an agent is employed by a player to do, but his agents are requesting the sort of deal that MIGHT have been accepted before the Covid -19 Pandemic, but that they don't have a snowball's chance in Hell of getting now, if they insist on getting Jeremy to leave they will be depriving the club of a talent but in addition they will more likely than not ending up either 'parking' him with a 'big' club or having to accept far reduced terms from those they are seeking.

There are some that will say that it is stupid to let a player go who has been brought through the youth system and is destined for great things, there are others that will say good riddance if he isn't even prepared to extend his contract to cover the remaining nine games to be played of this season. There is a vague chance that an interim deal could be struck between the club and Ngakia's agents, the problem is that although so much water has passed under the bridge it hasn't stopped him and his agents from burning it! - Ed

Deja Vu Jack?

nevillenixon's picture
Submitted by nevillenixon on Mon, 08/06/2020 - 11:38

We have often been merciless in our 'observations' regarding the transfer from Arsenal to West Ham United of Jack Wilshere, someone somehow managed to convince Manuel Pellegrini that a three year contract at 100,000 per week was the minimum term acceptable in order for the ex-england player to sign, much to the chargrin of Hammers co-chairman and majority shareholder David Sullivan.

Regrettably, as had occurred symptomatically in the past, Jack picked up a long term injury almost on his arrival at the London Stadium, and has only managed 16 starting appearances in the last 21 months. A talented player yes, but with a body so frail he makes Andy Carroll look like Robocop! Time and again managers past and present have eulogised Wilshere's 'extraordinary' talent, some have described his skills as 'unreal', unfortunately for so long they have been 'unseen', so it is with more than a touch of trepidation that news of his 'complete recovery' must be received.

Realistically, based on the past, Jack Wilshere will get better and better in training, building up to a 'live game' crescendo, only to get subbed off with a niggling injury which then develops in to a full blown major rehabilitation project. It is not that his spirit is unwilling, far from it, but his body has had enough, the same thing happened to great striker who never was, Dean Ashton, after years of trying to get fit he finally had to retire because his body just wasn't up to it, sad but true.

When asked about his prospects during project restart Jack said "“It’s nice to finally get in front of the manager, When he first came, I had a few conversations with him and I got the feeling from him that he rated me, but I was still six weeks away from being able to get in front of him and show him what I can do. That’s all good in training, but really and truly you want to be doing it in games and earning his trust. It’s a good start for me to get back in training and in front of the manager and his coaching staff and show them what I can do. I know he’s been around for years and I’ve been around for years, so he sort of has an idea, but he’s never worked with me so it’s important I show him what I’m about, how I train and what I can bring to the team I wanted to give a good first impression to the manager. I know he would probably understand if I came back and was a bit rusty but you don’t want that in his head. You want to be sharp, you want to look like you’re fit and not look like you’re struggling. We did a lot of running when we came back and that was important. I knew that would be the case because this is pre-season and I didn’t want to be coming last. I wanted to be up the top showing him I’ve got the hunger to be the best I can be.”

All very endearing, but we have heard it all before, it is not just a case of deja vu, but groundhog day as well, of course he may return, stay fit and play as brilliantly as he has shown in the brief glimpses where his talent has been showcased, must go now, a pink pig has just flown by our office window! - Ed

Nathan's Back Now For Grady

nevillenixon's picture
Submitted by nevillenixon on Fri, 05/06/2020 - 11:52

Promising Hammers youngster Nathan Holland will NOT be returning to Oxford United even if their season restarts, Holland picked up an injury that curtailed his involvement with the club, however he left a deep impression on their fans and manager Karl Robinson who said
“It’s a real shame because the longer this has gone on there was always a chance that when we do play again Nathan might have been ready. It’s not a financial decision but we like to do things right for players here: West Ham were great and we talked honestly about the situation and the injury. We could have kept him hanging on and Nathan then maybe rushing back in his eagerness to play but he is an outstanding prospect and for his long term development then returning to West Ham is the right thing. “I know he enjoyed his time with us and you never know in football, we may see him in an Oxford shirt again some time, but for now we thank his for his efforts and we wish him well.”

How refreshing to see a club that helped one of the Irons youngsters along in their career but also had an eye on the bigger picture, a mutually beneficial situation for both clubs and long may it continue. Now all David Moyes has to do is to ensure that Grady Diangana returns to the club 'full of beans' and that he doesn't suffer a 'Baggies Hangover' or Billic withdrawal, after all Grady was a big fish in a small pond up at West Brom, the situation might slightly 'ruffle' him as he finds he is no longer 'top of the tree' at the London Stadium.

If by any chance West Ham were to be relegated and West Bromwich Albion were promoted talk of a full time transfer might appear again with a 20 Million price tag being mooted, however there is still so much for Hammers to play for in the remaining games talk of relegation has been banished, at least for now!

David Moyes has repeatedly stated his desire to build a team of young, hungry players, who have a desire to become part of something special, he is not perfect as a manager by any means, but he does possess the ability to work on a shoe string and 'polish turds' if you will pardon the expression. Privately he must be seething at the vast amount of money lavished on his predecessor Manuel Pellegrini, leaving him only with peanuts to reshape the team, but as he knows he is indeed fortunate to be at West Ham United when there is another fine crop of youngsters coming through, not since the nineties has the club had such a fine bunch of young lads rising through the ranks.

It is not only the resurgent youth that give Moyes reasons to be cheerful, he also has his not so secret weapon, in the form of Jarred Bowen, who is destined to do great things for the club, and who in just a couple of games managed to bring a smile to Sebastian Haller's face the first time for a very long time, it is hoped that the pair will continue to strike up a successful relationship in front of goal.

It should also be remembered that Bowen, Diangana and Holland are all England stars of the future and their values are only going one way, and that is up! If you add those three to Declan Rice, then there is a real possibility of the Irons providing a 'significant' amount of players for the Gareth Southgate's England team, over the years West Ham have provided so many top players for their countries and it seems that those times are returning, which can't be a bad thing can it? - Ed

Enough Subs For A Navy?

nevillenixon's picture
Submitted by nevillenixon on Thu, 04/06/2020 - 18:23

Five substitutes will be allowed during normal time for games to be played when the Barclays Premier League restarts on the June 17th of June, the decision was confirmed at the latest league meeting of stake holders. The 20 member clubs met on Thursday to discuss a range of measures building towards the planned return to action later this month.

Increasing from three to five the amount of players allowed to be substituted will only apply for the remaining games of the 2019-20 season and was agreed in principle last week, it is in line with the temporary law amendment made by the International Football Association Board last month. Shareholders also approved for clubs to increase the maximum number of substitute players on the bench from seven to nine for the rest of the 2019/20 season, bearing in mind most teams will have to play nine games in five weeks it is a wise amendment to the rules as injuries will obviously be rampant.

FIFA proposed the substitutions rule change as it is anticipated players across Europe will to be asked to play matches in a condensed period of time during the coming months, teams will be limited to three opportunities during matches to make their substitutions as well as half time in order to prevent unnecessary stoppages. Hmmm good luck with implementing that one, what happens if a player is injured, do they have to use up one of their 'slots' in order to check a player's well being or do they just have to 'sub ' him off'? Also having a bench that comprises of nine players is a luxury some teams aren't usually able to accommodate, they just won't have enough fit first team players.

On Thursday, the formula for the season's possible curtailment was discussed as has been done in previous meetings, however there is so much momentum behind the restart of the season on the 17th of June there are no plans to vote or come to an agreement over an actual method as yet. The processes and planning are in place as part of the government's Step 4 return to play protocols, however there have been no votes regarding neutral venues but there is an agreement in principle that they can be used if required, although only if circumstances dictate where a match cannot be safely held at a home venue, then the contingency is in place to move such matches to a neutral venue.

Again there is some confusion as to who would 'adjudicate' such decisions, and when we spoke to the police overseers about this we were told " it's about contingency and flexibility, we have plans in place that can be enacted relatively quickly." Seeing so many players on the bench will make match day look like an 'American Football Experience', but without the 'Killer Cops'! There will be more subs than an English Navy yard, especially after the massive budget cuts to the military that will follow as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. - Ed
