£2,394 Business Class Return To Chile Or Rivals Season Ticket?

£2,394 buys you an Airfrance business class return ticket from London Heathrow to Chile, it is also around the price of a cheap season ticket to attend matches at the Emirates and to not be able to attend them at Tottenham's as yet unfinished White Hart Lane ground redevelopment. Both Tottenham and Arsenal have struggled fo finance their new stadia, with the result being eye watering ticket prices in order to offset the investment, West Ham on the other hand do not need to, the result being that Hammers are able to offer season tickets that don't require a mortgage!

The £2,394 ticket to Chile represents good value especially as it is a return, it is not known whether Manuel Pellegrini elected to 'slum it' in Business Class or travel first, but he defintely doesn't travel steerage! 'Coming home' was almost certainly part of the Hammers manager's itinerary mapped out before the beginning of the season, however the 'Nil Points' situation that he finds himself in after four matches has had many fans asking why he didn't stay in England and work with his underperforming players? Their collective stats for the home defeat by Wolves made for some sorry reading, their distances covered would even have embarrassed Slaven Billic's coaching team, so why haven't they been 'put through the ringer during the International break?

In the past West Ham have had to contend with a plethora of players going off to represent their countries, however that is not the case now with only three first team players being called up, the rest have been told to 'rest up' for a couple of days. Could this be a part of a 'cunning plan' to help re-boot a disparate squad that should be performing at a much higher level than in the previous four games? Perhaps 'just running around' won't cut it in Pellegrini's world, but almost the entire team looked leggy against opposition that run harder and with more purpose, something has to be done but maybe doing 'nothing' will end up achieving 'something' because nervous players make mistakes.

Coming back to the £2,394 mentioned earlier, the Hammers hierarchy probably intended several 'price hikes' once their team had become 'established' at the Souless Dome AKA The London Stadium, unfortunately for the fiscal planners continuing poor results have created a situation where owning a season ticket is more a curse than a joy even if it is dirt cheap. The late Brian Clough used to say "football isn't complicated, 11 men chase the ball and the team that scores the most win! Evaluating Hammers' current plight is relatively easy, as is the resolution, start winning matches and begin the process of buying the London Stadium outright.

Do those two things and there won't be the vat of negativity surrounding the club that there is at the present time, wins do good things! - Ed

Everyone Is Pitching In To LLDC And Hammers Dispute!

All hell has broken loose as the LLDC has gone on the offensive gainst West Ham over the White Elephant that is the London Stadium. The very fact that it is still called the London Stadium hints towards rather inefficient guidance from those in control of the LLDC and E20 the company that is the 'figure head' of the 'beast'. How such an iconic and famous stadium can still be without a named sponsor after nearly three years beggars belief, by anyone's calculations there has been a massive lost opportunity for a decent financial return and the chance of some positive publicity.

How much more money has been spurned by the London Stadium hierarchy? Well even if you exclude the naming rights for three years, approximately £30 Million, there are a host of other sponsorship and revenue opportunites being missed. In July, it was revealed £450,000 of taxpayers' money had been spent on unsuccessfully searching for a sponsor for the venue, which cost £323m to convert into a football ground after an original estimate of £190m. It was planned that any sponsorship would offset some of the £140m losses expected over the next 10 years.

"West Ham's rent at their London Stadium does not even cover cost of staging matches", the ground's owners say, Lyn Garner London Legacy Development Corporation chief executive also said "high operating costs" and "a lack of commercialisation" meant they were facing "losses for the next 97 years". Garner then went on to say, "To be honest, what is really driving the problems here are the low rents paid by the concessionaires, particularly West Ham. The elephant in the room is the fee that they pay us in a usage cost does not cover the event day costs, and that's before we go anywhere near a commercial advantage. It simply does not cover the costs of running the events on a day-to-day basis. The stadium is a centrepiece of the legacy of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, it's really important that we tackle the public subsidy issue over the next few years, there is much to do and many reasons for it."

It was planned that any sponsorship would offset some of the £140m losses expected over the next 10 years. "West Ham United initially offered to purchase London Stadium but our request was denied. We were given a tenancy agreement because we were the best offer by far on the table," a club spokesman said. "As LLDC acknowledged at the hearing today the losses at the stadium are due to a number of factors, including the extraordinary cost of moving the retractable seating, inefficient operating costs and the absence of a naming rights partner. "There are other commercial opportunities that they have ignored. West Ham United have offered our experience, expertise and opportunities for shared endeavour every step of the way but these have so far been rejected, as well as considerable cash for additional rights, all of which have also been rejected."All we have ever done is honour the terms of our tenancy agreement which has 97 years to run."

Hammers have paid an annual rent of £2.5m since moving to the Stadium in August 2016. The Stadium has been dogged by controversy over its finances, in July it was revealed £450,000 of taxpayers' money had been spent on unsuccessfully searching for a sponsor for the venue, which cost £323m to convert into a football ground after an original estimate of £190m.

West Ham have offered to help the LLDC identify commercial opportunities and have only ever honoured the terms of their tenancy agreement, although on refelection it might have been better to have opted to pay a higher amount given the huge amount of money sloshing around the Barclays Premier League. The club have also offered to pay £300,000 to change the colour of the running track around the ground from green to claret but this offer has been rejected

Lyn Garner said it was rejected for a variety of reasons, including the fact "it could affect potential naming rights" deals, adding that they were in discussions over charging an annual commercial fee of "around £300,000" instead. "The usage fee is extremely low," she added. "We could take the £300k it's a drop in the ocean for the size of the losses we are dealing with and will be dealing with for the next 97 years of this contract. "But it's not unreasonable to ask the club to pay something extra for something they are getting back which is extra."

This 'dog in the manger' attitude would be appalling in any area of commerce, but to deny the public purse by refusing funds is tantamount to a betrayal of public office! Irrespective of the public's opinion of Hammers co-owners, one thing that has to be acknowledged is that they know how to make money, furthermore they have offered their not inconsiderable skills and business infrastructure to help bring the Stadium's finances more in keeping with such a large and potentially promising asset.

The LLDC's refusal to see sense will just end up with further acrimony, there is of course another option. West Ham United could buy the Stadium outright and run it as a proper business, the funding might prove difficult, but the second the 'White Elephant' is taken off the books, the tax payer will be saving from day one, instead of losing money the Stadium would make money, it would make even more if the running track was removed completely as has been successfully done in Russia following the Olympic events. The pitch could be lowered enabling much better sight lines and an increased capacity, possibly as high as 70,000.

In a way all the negative press regarding the Stadium has helped deflect attention from the team's lamentable early performances, but claret or green or purple, the outside of the pitch has little to do with results attained on the pitch itself, Manuel Pellegrini needs to dig deep to prevent a club that six weeks ago was continually referred to as 'Money Bags West Ham', but is now referred to as 'Crisis Club West Ham'. The spat over the Stadium can rumble on, the poor results can't be allowed to, there is no point in being at a stadium in order to reach 'another level' if that level is downwards to the Championship! - Ed

Numbed And Dumbed Hammers Out Thought & Out Fought!

nevillenixon's picture

It has taken four days in order to be able to review the events of last Saturday with a clear mind, the day started well enough, there was a carnival atmosphere in the Olympic Park and along the canal banks where people picniced or were enjoying a drink or two either on the canal banks or on the floating barges. The sun was shining and all was set for a good day out, the previous three defeats Hammers had experienced were just a blip and put down to the fact that the players were just getting to know each other.

The London Stadium was full to the brim with expectant fans and a lot of youngsters sporting their new 'reasonably priced' replica kits, taking care not to spill ketchup and mustard on their new acquisitions from their 'reasonably priced' oversized hot dogs or 'award winning Wicks Manor Sausages' as the club like to call them. The air of expectancy didn't last for long, after a five minute flurry at the beginning Hammers were then on the back foot, with Wolves playing an even higher line than the high line Manuel Pellegrini had set his side out to play, thus negating any advantage that could have been reached by playing so high!

Hammers midfield was non existent leaving an unenviable burden on the defence which performed, as it happened, admirably with Diop in particular looking like a top player and Balbuena showed much more composure than in his previous matches. However there was little to cheer about elsewhere on the pitch, Fredericks may well be one of the fastest players in the Premier League, but on this showing he is also one of the most profligate. Time and time again his final ball was atrocious as he ran in to blind alleys, Aaron Cresswell was hardly any better and both players managed to get themselves booked relatively early in the match leaving them prone to the Wolves forwards and wingers.

One of the few bright spots of the match was the performance of Felipe Anderson with the club's record signing popping up all over the pitch, however whether it is the size of his transfer fee or the fact he just wants to impress, the fact is he is trying too hard, he needs to concentrate on playing his natural game and not on trying to be all things to all men.

Such was Wolves dominance as the first half wore on that getting to half time with the scores level was in itself an achievement, hopefully the £100 Million team would be given a real rollicking by their 'top class' manager and come out looking like a new team. Snodgrass who had also run all over the place but to little effect, was replaced by Yarmolenko at the beginning of the second half but try as they might Hammers just couldn't break down an obdurate and accomplished Wolves back line.

As the game wore on it became increasingly obvious that one point would be the best that could be expected, things did perk up a bit when Chicharito was brought on with 15 minutes to go, but so was Adame Traore, he would be facing two full backs already on yellow cards. During one rare moment that Hammers looked like scoring after Chicharito was upended in the penalty area but play was waved on by the referee, one season ticket holder in the Bobby Moore upper leaped up to complain forgetting that he had nervously been munching on a hand full of Liquorice Allsorts, the next minute there was chaos as said person began to choke, croak, wheeze and gasp for air! So concerned were all those around that there was a genuine fear that an Ambulance or a Medic would have to be summoned, however in good East End tradition the odd slap on the back and a bit of an adapted Heimlich manoeuvre meant everything was going to be fine. Once it was obvious that the fellow had recovered sufficiently, one of the old wags sitting a couple of rows further up said" People will do anything to avoid watching this fucking pile of shit won't they?" He wasn't far wrong.

Well the afflicted one might have been better off being taken away before the end of the match! As the match was heading for a draw and home fans were thinking well at least we've got a point, the Wolves goalkeeper went down as if he had been shot resulting in a further four minutes of injury time being added, Carlos Sanchez who hadn't put a foot wrong for the entire match decided to outplay the opposition in a dangerous midfield area, he tried to be too skillfull instead of booting the ball in to row Z, instead he lost the ball which was then played to the galloping Traore who inevitably slotted home at the near post of the previously unbeatable Fabianski.

That late late goal managed to empty the London Stadium faster than a bomb alert, but it should be noted that the vast majority stayed to the bitter end or at least up until the last 60 seconds! A fourth successive Premier League defeat made for some typically honest appraisals by fans on their way home, most notably" £100 Million? their not even worth a hundred quid!"

The last time Hammers started a season in the top flight with four defeats was in 2010 when Avram Grant 'undertook' the club to the Championship, Manuel Pellegrini will have to act quickly when he returns from sorting out his personal affairs in Chile, after the international break there is the away game against Everton followed by home fixtures against Chelsea and Manchester United there are also matches against Tottenham and Man City just around the corner. This is the West Ham team that played against Wolves: Fabianski, Fredericks, Balbuena, Diop, Cresswell, Wilshere (Obiang 64), Sanchez, Snodgrass (Yarmolenko 46), Anderson, Antonio (Hernandez 75), Arnautovic. On paper it looks like a good team, but then as we all know, football is played on grass not paper!

The crowd went home numbed, the players went home dumbed, out thought and out fought. This could be a long hard season! - Ed

Managers and their remit

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Tue, 04/09/2018 - 13:50

These guys are paid absolute millions for what they do. Is it too much to expect a new manager and so called top manager to come in and know exactly how he wants to play and who to play where? I can't believe we're four games in and look like a pile of thrown together whatnots. Why so many changes so soon? the back line is unsettled and whats more Diop and Balbuena haven't played in the prem league before. Anderson seems to have no fixed role, Arnautovic no service and the likes of Sanchez are no better than Kouyate or Noble. People make excuses for the poor start - it needs time blah blah. why hasn't it been sorted pre season? who bought the players and what exactly did they have in mind? it may come together suddenly and pellegrini will look like a genius. on the other hand, we're 12 points down already and palace made a similar start last year and needed a miracle from hodgson to keep them up.

Pellegrini is flying back to chile for the International break and has given the players a few days off Taking The piss or wot. I would have thought he would have used the time to work on their defence and to keep them fit they look a bit sluggish now, wonder how their gonna be after a few days off

WHY?

Simple question but Why do our players seem disinterested and unmotivated yet again? its just like last season under Bilic.....so new season plenty of new blood in the squad but this same old problem keeps arising....Are the new management and coaches making the same mistakes and being to soft on our players if so it has to stop I don't want to hear about how good we look during the week I want to see it on Saturday when it matters but I already like many here have my doubts we will see that as the old problems raise there head again.,,so why do our players have such a poor attitude? its not like they are the first ones this has been a running theme for a good long while now...I often say that we are cursed as nothing seems to change at our club(apart from the ground!)The board must be thinking the same they have put a lot of money in and got the manager they said they wanted and yet 4 games in we look as poor if not more so than the start of last season?
Players already coming out saying its not good enough we need to do more blah blah bloody blah well get off the social media and start bloody grafting because you just don't earn the support you get from loyal west ham fans....I would like to say things will change and quick but seriously the stick I am getting off of my friends and colleagues already is getting hard to defend and the old whats the difference between west ham and a triangle joke being repeated over and over again is irritating and try as you must to defend your team amongst all the stick thrown my/our way is getting harder and harder so El Pel get to grips and get it sorted or we will be in for another bleak winter.
