Why Sam is not the man

Not the man to improve West Ham as an attacking force that is.

Most of us accept that Sam is a good defensive manager, most credit him with getting us back up at the first attempt, and credit him with stabilising us in the difficult first season back. This was achieved by making West Ham a hard side to beat, something Sam (a defender as a player) is naturally good at.

But being good defensively is only half a manager's job, though Sam might say otherwise! A manager also has to be good at making his side into a potent attacking force, or at least as potent as possible given the players available. We are almost at the end of our third year back in the Premier League, and I think Sam has badly fallen down in this direction. In fact I would go as far as to say he is a poor attacking manager.

I'll give you some reasons why I believe this.
Last season Sam played Jarvis on the left, and Downing on the right (against their natural feet). This is a modern trend, the theory is that the player can cut in on his good foot, and either have a pot at goal or whip a cross in angled to the centre-forward. All well and good IF it works out in games. IT NEVER DID! Every single game (from memory) was played this way, and how many goals and assists did these 2 players produce in the 2013-2014 season? ONE between them!! Sam might have swapped them around during games, if only to give the opposition something to think about, he never did. He might have, at least tried, playing them for whole games on their natural sides, he never did. We know Sam is a stats man, so why did he persist? Stubborness is sometimes a virtue, but not in the face of repeated failure.

I am not a big fan of Tiki-Taka, but being able to keep possession of the ball is a basic footballing skill: pass, move and get open so the guy with the ball has options. If you have the ball, the other side can't score, it's not rocket science. We have very good players, so why do we lose/give away the ball so much? Our possession is almost always (yes not Saturday against 10 men I know) less than our opponents. I can only guess that passing practise is not high on Sam's list of things we work on in training, because our players too often look like strangers, and don't seem to have developed the instincts of knowing where each other will be, those kind of instincts come from repeated practise.

Sam seems very wary of 'skill' players. He doesn't seem to want to give them a chance (maybe it's his inate dislike of 'taking chances'). Be it Zarate getting few games earlier in the season before basically being scrapped, or Amalfitano getting very few starts, or Nene getting almost no time at all. Sam would much rather give time to "trusted" players however less talented they are.

Overall I would say he lacks imagination in the attacking side of the game, he likes to play one way, with trusted players. But this has the effect of making us predictable and easy to play against.
I have little doubt that we could remain a mid-table side if Sam stays. We could have season after season in the 'middle group' of the Premier League. But if we want to watch better football, and maybe even challenge for trophies in the next few years... well I just can't see it happening under Sam.

Step forward Aaron Cresswell!!!!
Well done on a fully deserved award.
Now ensure you snub those two clubs of to$$ers that play in Blue and deliver on what could be a great final year at the Boleyn (if Sam's not around!! sorry)

i know theres a lot of divided opinion about Pardew and this post is nothing to do with do we want him back or dont we ? just a thought , is he without question one of the most pleased people on the planet , i refer of course to Palace's lg standing , 12th with 42 as compared with Newcastle 5 or 6 below with 35 and in absolute melt down , i know they didn't sack him and that he left of his own free will but lets be honest the dogs on the streets new he was forced out , and like him or loave him he's made a bit of a difference out of them , i watched them the other night against shitty and thought they put up a good show , lovely passing movements especially in the final third, wonder do they have to go to Newcastle in the remaining three .
You can tell the season is almost up when these sort of unimportant , nondescript posts start .
On a scale of 1 to 10 where would you put his smug levels

Next season

Hi Guys.

New to the site and would like to see where everybody thinks we go as of next season team wise (I know we dont know for definite who is going to be the manager yet)!!

But lets give ourselves the job.

Obviously we dont know exactly how much money we would have to spend or how much we could generate from sales etc BUT lets have a go at WHAT THE NUCLEUS of our team/squad would be.

Im releasing/selling O,Brien,Demel,Noble,Jarvis,Cole and Nolan. All of these are either past their usefullness Prem wise or simply never had it (Jarvis and Noble)!!!

I would also consider selling Valencia (as unfortunately he does not look as if he has goals in him) and would possibly consider moving Collins on (lots and lots of heart but there comes a time when that just not enough any more).

4 of my first replacements would be El Mahamody and Mc Gregor at Hull ,Remy at Chelsea and Siggurdsonn at Swansea.

We need to address our "deficiencies with width" and as such I would be trying to lure Merallis from Everton.

I would like to see Jenkinson signed permanently and have him as coverfor LB and RB.

A line up of :

Adrian/Mc Gregor

El Mahamody,Reid,Tomkins,Cresswell

Merallis Kouyate,Downing,Siguurdsonn

Sahko,Remy

Back up: Carroll,Jenkinson,Burke,Poyet,Valencia (if staying) Collins(if staying).

Obviously need a few more squad (potential starters) and once the relegation battle has been decided a good look there for the cream of them (Ings etc) and a look at whos maybe not getting a regular game at City/Utd/Chelsea/Arse to see if there are any there that could be added.

Anyway thats where I would be going with it.....im sure other will have their own ideas.

Hope you share them.

I'm pro Sam

That's my take.
Don't agree?
Couldnt give a flying toss.
I'm happy with top half.
Played some good stuff on Saturday too without Tomkins, Reid, Sakho, Carroll and a fully fit Song.
Still played Nolan(annoying) but the team seem joined up still. Things good behind the scenes.
Why f**k it up?

Come on stuart!

Spare a thought

Hi guys I'm glad to be back and nice to see a lot of the names who I had the honour of meeting at the championship play off final against Blackpool.
This leads me to asking all irons fans to spare a thought for Blackpool fc (me living there) whose chairman is systematically destroying the club with out any thought for the loyal fans.
We have had a few dodgy chairman over the last few years but they all have one thing in common they left, this chairman is on a mission to destroy a fine old football club with plenty of tradition and history.
