Tark-Off-Ski!

Submitted by Louis Nixon on Tue, 16/11/2021 - 08:12

Reports that Hammers are closing in on a deal for Burnley's James Tarkowski are very wide of the mark, Moyes pursued Tarkowski for some considerable time before eventually deciding the player didn't really want to come to the club and that the price was far too high when Burnley declared they wanted £50 million for the 29 year old who was looking to regain his place in Gareth Southgate's England squad by joining a Champions League club.

Burnley will still be looking to get more than £10 Million for Tarkowski during the forthcoming transfer window, this figure for a player who is in the last year of his contract is excessive. David Moyes is NOT a manager to be snubbed and forget about it, so if you add in some of the comments attributed to Tarkowski when a move was originally mooted and the fact he has already turned the club down, it becomes clear that the defender no longer fits the bill, such has been Hammers upward curve.

It is testament to just how amazingly well Moyes has done that a player of Tarkowski's obvious talent is no longer viewed as 'suitable', or as good enough, to make the grade at the club. The situation does beggar the question as to whether David Moyes was EVER really interested in Tarkowski, or if he was using the supposed interest in the Burnley defender to mask his real target of acquisition, Chelsea's Kurt Zouma.

We know which of the two players Hammers fans prefer, the one who wanted to "come to a big family" or the one who "didn't want to come" because of his family! Zoooooouma- LN

Former Hammer Signs For Reading

Submitted by Louis Nixon on Mon, 15/11/2021 - 18:12

Championship side Reading have signed former West Ham United and England striker Andy Carroll on a short term deal until the middle of January. 32 year old Carroll who spent six largly unproductive injury ravaged years with the Irons had been a free agent since being released by Newcastle at the end of last season.

"Andy is looking for a new challenge in his career and we need a player with his quality and vast experience," Reading manager Veljko Paunovic said. Carroll could make his Royals debut against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, but is a salient lesson for young players to observe with regards to looking after themselves.

Andy Carroll was destined for greatness at one time, if only he had settled down and looked after himself a few years before he eventually did, he might have fulfilled his potential. Instead Andy will always be a 'what might have been' which is such a shame because on his day he was the best header of the ball in Europe! - LN

Rumours Of Big Spend Wide Of Mark

West Ham's need to strengthen it's squad is well documented, the possible need for reinforcements being more acute due to Angelo Ogbonna's long term injury and Saïd Benrahma's six week unavailability due to his participation in the impending AFCON tournament.

The fixture list the club faces is daunting even for clubs with massive squads like Chelsea, Man City, Man Utd and Liverpool, so David Moyes faces an uphill task in order to keep pace with them. The hectic schedule begins on Saturday with the game away to Wolves which is then followed by a further TWELVE games, all in the space of 42 days!

That's virtually a GAME EVERY THREE DAYS for SIX full weeks! Make no mistake, the challenges David Moyes has had to overcome so far this season will pale into insignificance if he is unable to navigate this tricky period. Obviously fans and observers have been quick to link Hammers with a plethora of players as a result of Daniel Kretinsky's recent inbound financial investment.

The stark reality hiding behind all the financial sunshine is that the money Kretinsky has brought to the table will be used to "facilitate the club's upward trajectory by assisting in providing a stable operating environment. Funding for players will be available enabling the manager 'sufficient' scope to pursue appropriately researched acquisitions" are parts of the 'mission' statement, good news, BUT in no way does that indicate a January buying frenzy, in fact far from it.

Alex Kral was brought in to cover the midfield duo of Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek, so that 'emergency' is catered for. Nikola Vlasic was brought in as 'false' cover for Michail Antonio and Alphonse Areola for Lukasz Fabianski in addition to Kurt Zouma to replace 'Les' Dawson.

Zouma's signing is now looking to have been an inspired choice, now Issa Diop and Les will have to battle it out for selection, with Jamal Baptiste being promoted to the first team training in order to get read for the next jump up. The ONE really massive elephant in the room is the position of left back! Aaron Cresswell, written off by many a couple of years ago, is in the form of his life, his assists and dead ball placement are second to none, his place in the team is integral and it could be argued he is up there with Rice and Antonio as a vital part of the team's success.

Authur Masuaku is a 'complicated' player who is capable of moments of pure brilliance on his day, but a left back he AIN'T and he is not capable of occupying that position to any degree, his forte being the ability to bring the ball out of defence, NOT tracking back or making 'safe' interceptions. The club do not have a 'proper' left back in their ranks, Ben Johnson CAN play at left back, but he is not naturally a left sided player and moving sides would hamper his performances, which of course have been SO good that they have kept Vlad the impaler Coufal out of the first team.

So don't expect David Moyes to get 'cash blind' just because there might be a few quid in the kitty, he may try to get Jesse Lingard in to cover for Saïd Benrahma if the price is right, but his main interest will be to get in cover for Cresswell, the 31year old, who is soon to turn 32, has been an ever present for Moyes this term, losing him would be catastrophic and seriously impact on the club's fortunes.

Moyes is no fool and will be only too aware of how much his team relies on Cresswell, so he simply MUST bring in a back up and be proactive by resting Cresswell occasionally rather than risking injury by playing him consistently without a proper break. Also there are Cresswell's hair product sponsors that have to be kept happy, after all they CANNOT be expected to keep his hair SO pristine for an entire season without being rested! - Ed

Lingard "always nailed on" To Join Hammers

nevillenixon's picture
Submitted by nevillenixon on Sun, 14/11/2021 - 08:55

It is not just social media that is awash with reports regarding Jesse Lingard's impending departure from Manchester United, following recent developments there are now genuine reasons for fans to believe that Lingard will be arriving at their club, but which one?

Jesse's agent, who is also his brother, has made it clear as day that his client is NOT prepared to stay at Old Trafford when his contract ends in June, and will definitely NOT be signing a new contract irrespective of what is on offer, citing Ole Gonner's broken promises as the main factor in reaching what is a tumultuous decision for a player who came all the way through the United youth system.

'Gonner' must have gone to the 'Levy School of Broken Promises' for the special 'hand shake' class when he 'enticed' Lingard back to Old Trafford with promises of first team football, but then signing not only Jaden Sancho but also the preening one himself, Ronaldo!

Seeing one person signed for massive money who plays in your role is bad enough, but to then see another arrive, the preening star that is Ronaldo who was virtually guaranteed to start ahead of him, must have been the final straw for the Lingards. 'Gonner' might be gone by the time the January window opens, but having been publicly slighted by his boyhood club, Lingard has decided enough is enough and is anticipating a move to the London Bowl, NOT St James' Park.

Through careful financial investments, Lingard is already a wealthy man who will be seeking playing time over income. Of course he will expect to earn well, but essentially playing is the name of the game for him as he reaches his peak age, his next move will define his career.

David Moyes is an obvious admirer of Lingard and was keen to acquire his services on a permanent basis following his incredibly successful loan spell at the club, however he and the board baulked at United's £25 Million valuation, eventually signing Nikola Vlasic instead.

Lingard's 'value' is plummeting as his contract runs down and despite being known as one of the wealthiest clubs in World football, they are owned on borrowed money and have to be financially accountable, as a consequence their bean counters will want to see Lingard moved on during the window in order to at least get something for him.

There is one relevant, but newly unique element for Manchester United to consider with regards to Lingard joining West Ham, and that is, can they risk selling him to a rival club that currently sits FOUR places above them? Hopefully the conceit displayed by their manager is endemic at the club and the Old Trafford hierarchy will be so full of themselves that they will think Hammers are just another bunch of noisy neighbours who are located just a short earth warming flight away.

The 'closer' we have heard is that Lingard has described the atmosphere as 'TOXIC' at Old Trafford, what a difference from what he experienced at West Ham hey? IF Hammers can get the deal over the line for the mooted £10 Million asking price, then it could actually really make the difference between being top level finishers as opposed to nearly rans.

Outcomes can be defined and dependant on fine lines, Lingard might well provide that extra element required to get the club over the line this season and confirm it's 'elite' status is NOT a flash in the pan, and that the club is FINALLY getting to the level that it's supporters have deserved for years. - Ed

January Sales Rarely Provide Good Buys

nevillenixon's picture
Submitted by nevillenixon on Sat, 13/11/2021 - 21:35

There has been much speculation as to whether West Ham will be splashing the cash when the January transfer window opens, the recent cash injection the club received following Daniel Kretinsky's purchase of a 27% stake has led many to believe that David Moyes will be going on a January sales shopping spree.

Without wanting to put too much of a dampener on proceedings, the money coming into the club will almost entirely be used to stabilise the club's day to day finances as well as being used to offset the huge loses sustained by the club during the worst of the Covid pandemic.

There will be little, if any, money to spend on new players and loans are not currently an option due to Alex Kral and Alphonse Areola occupying the two loan berths that are allowed. Neither player has had many opportunities to show their true worth, but it would be rather strange if they were not retained by the club in way or another.

Kral is the around the same price as Areola to sign permanently, but he has played much less than the Frenchman and might still be viewed as a bit of a risk. That said David Moyes will be looking to ADD to his squad if he possibly can, it is believed that was his intention BEFORE Angelo Ogbonna's injury.

Newcastle will grab all the headlines during the window, but they are and will be for some time a club that is in transition, players arriving at the toon will not necessarily be mercenaries, but they will be of a certain type, the type David Moyes doesn't generally like, but that won't prevent Eddie Howe from attempting to hijack Hammers' targets that they already have lined up.

Good deals are few and far between during the January window, but faced with fighting on four fronts David Moyes might well have to bring in another face, or even two! - Ed

Back up to Antonio is wrong

mcbikeman's picture
Submitted by mcbikeman on Sat, 13/11/2021 - 11:31

We need a striker obviously but back up striker for me thats a no because unless you are a journeyman and offered dumb money the answer from most right now will be thanks but no thanks and we have had enough of those in the past so lets not go there ever again but the elephant in the room being Antonio is irreplaceable....for me that is wrong what we need is a striker with attitude and ability who is not going to accept sitting on the bench hoping for those famous hamstrings to twang and get a chance.....what we want need and Antonio needs is a player who will push for a start not make Ants the obvious choice make him look over his shoulder a bit some real competition which in turn will improve our side even more.....where you find such a player is up to Moyes and Newman the head of recruitment to sort out but please not a back up striker i want one pushing to get in ahead of Ants so the whole squad continues to grow.

Antonio Injury Concern

Submitted by Louis Nixon on Fri, 12/11/2021 - 17:36

While most Hammers fans were 'pleased' Declan Rice would miss England's World Cup qualifiers against Albania and San Marino through a non Covid related virus that he is expected to make a full recovery from in time for Hammers away Premier League game against Wolves, there is growing anxiety regarding Michail Antonio.

While Declan Rice would only have had to travel to Wembley and then to San Marino, Michail Antonio has flown thousands of miles to El Salvador in order to represent Jamaica. The Hammers only striker then flies to Jamaica to play against the USA only three days later! 13/11/21 El Salvador v Jamaica 02:05 16/11/21 Jamaica v USA 22:00.

All in all Antonio will travel a minimum of 17,000 miles and play two highly competitive games, heaven help his hamstrings AND the nerves of Hammers fans. Having lost Angelo Ogbonna for the rest of the season barring a miracle, fans are rightly concerned about the demands International football will have on a player who is vital to the team's success.

Losing Ogbonna is bad enough, but to lose Big Mikey would be catastrophic and seriously, if not mortally, wound Hammers unlikely push towards achieving a top four slot this season. Up until the Og's injury Hammers had been very lucky with regards to injuries, but the frailty of the squad was always going to be called into question sooner or later.

Following the International break Hammers have an extremely congested fixture list, during December there is one period when there will be SIX games in EIGHTEEN days! The sheer weight of games is going to test David Moyes and his squad to the limits of endurance, but that is the price you pay for wanting to dine at football's top table.

As clubs approach the remaining two thirds of the season, some of the anomalies that have benefited West Ham will surely resolve themselves, Tottingham cannot possibly be as bad under Conte as they were under Santos and will be looking to make up their lost ground. Arsenal are showing a lot of promise under Arteta and currently have the North London bragging rights over Tottingham, London rivals Crystal Palace are also showing improved form, but the 'key player in the equation is Manchester United, or rather Ole Gonner!

The longer Manchester United retain Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the better chance there is of Hammers making the top four, although realistically even finishing in the top six for a second year running would be a phenomenal achievement. It is incredible when you think of where the club was less than two years ago and remarkable bearing in mind the circumstances surrounding Moyes' return to the club as a managerial firefighter for the SECOND TIME running.

Last time Antonio went off to play for Jamaica, the club sent his physio with him to ensure he was looked after properly, it is to be hoped the same amount of diligence and care has been taken this time round..come back fit Mikey, your club needs you!-LN

So How Much Dead Wood Has Moyes Left?

Submitted by Louis Nixon on Thu, 11/11/2021 - 14:06

Since his 'resurrection' David Moyes has overseen the culling of a bloated and ageing squad, his task is not nearing completion as yet, but it is a long way down the road with few obvious contenders remaining for the old heave ho. Gone are players who didn't fit the mould, or more exactly players who weren't prepared to run, they are being replaced by young and hungry players who are desperate to give it their all, as opposed to players who were old and bloated who were disparate to all!

Those remaining on the 'hit list' are mostly nearing the end of their ludicrously generous contracts, contracts that were SO generous that they couldn't or wouldn't be matched by ANY other club. There will be little or no residual sell on value for any of the players involved, but there will be a massive reduction to the wages bill. Money that could be used more prudently like maybe ensuring the club's brightest and top players earn a commensurate wage, as opposed to the completely imbalanced and illogical wage structure that Moyes inherited.

Andriy Yarmolenko missed a golden opportunity to shine by playing in the most recent Europa League Cup game through injury, it was probably the last opportunity for him to be seen ahead of the January transfer window and essentially puts the kibosh on the club being able to off load him and his outrageous £115,000 per week wages.

Darren Randolph is also now surplus to requirements, although in his case he was at least able to play when called upon. The extra points gained after he arrived to replace the disaster that was known as Roberto who had been playing disastrously while Lukasz Fabinski was out injured, saved the club from relegation if you care to examine the results at that time. However with Alphonse Areola as well as Nathan Trott the obvious back ups to Fabianski, Randolph's days are numbered, the club might even get a few quid for the Republic of Ireland stopper.

We'll get to the other players who are 'on the brink' in our follow up article, until then be a Happy Hammer! We are massive! - LN
