  • Downing Departs

    Stewart Downing has joined his boyhood club Middlesbrough on a four year deal for a fee believed to be £5.5 Million, rising to as much as £8 Million should the Championship team attain promotion to the Barclays Premier League. Not a bad bit of business for both clubs, Downing is 31 years old next week, so to have recouped their initial outlay and remove a large earner of the books, Hammers seem to have done rather well. However Downing was one of West Ham's best players last season, particularly when used at the tip of the diamond formation, indeed Slaven Billic has stated that he did not want Downing to move, but understood the player's desire to return to his 'spiritual' home.
    Middlesbrough have acquired a player at his peak, who will inspire his team mates, he will obviously be made captain by Aitor Karanka and should grace the Riverside for the rest of his playing career. How he gets on with the rough and tumble of the Championship is a matter of some conjecture, but he gave his all for West Ham, and deserves praise for putting up with some atrocious managerial formation decisions. All West Ham fans will wish him well, and if he helps get Middlesbrough promoted he will have added a couple of million pounds in to the transfer kitty! -Ed

  • Goodbye Adrian?

    Ok, no formal bids have been offered that I'm aware of so no need to panic just yet.
    However after reading of Manure's goalkeeping crisis on the BBC website www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/33531333 is there the possibility/danger they could look to us to solver their dilemma?
    Adrian proved his worth last season with some excellent performances and should easily retain his status as WH No.1 come the season proper. Would we be able to deflect any advances from the big guns should they come knocking and would he even think of leaving us after such a short spell?
    There are still 48 days of the transfer window to go and whilst no-one has come knocking for our has beens we've also, so far, not had anyone come in looking at our first 11 other than Downing who moved for personal reasons.
    Should we be worried about Adrian or any others leaving?

  • QPR Sterling Windfall Enables Hard Ball Negotiations For Austin's Sale

    Raheem Sterling's transfer from Liverpool to Manchester City will net QPR around £9 Million as a result of the 20% sell on fee that was negotiated at the time of his transfer from the west London club to Anfield. This massive cash bonus will enable QPR to maintain their stance over Austin's £15 Million valuation, not good news for those clubs, including West Ham, who were hoping to take advantage of QPR's relegation and financial plight. Apparently hammers, David Sullivan in particular, were really interested in trying to do a deal for the in demand striker, but this latest development will see 'other options' pursued. West Ham simply cannot afford to be involved in any bidding war, especially as the seller now holds all the aces! -Ed

    Strong rumours that the Downing to Boro deal is done at 5 or 6 million. Who do we replace him with? I'd go for Kevin Mirallas... other suggestions?

    The signing of Angelo Ogbonna along with that of Dmitri Payet and Pedro Obiang by West Ham United represents a significant upping of the ante with regards to the club's aspirations and future recruitment frame work. Gone are the days of signing past it has beens looking for a final pay day, or of getting loan players who will never be played by the manager because their face or their agent doesn't fit! So, happy days, but hasn't the club overstretched itself a little? The financial commitment including transfer fees and wages to fund the new arrivals is quite staggering, but such is the price needed to get to that legendary 'next level' that fans have dreamed of for years! On closer analysis of the Ogbonna deal, it is interesting to read the quote from Juve's official website, particularly with reference to the fee being spread over three years. So essentially the player is being paid for in instalments, not a bad bit of business on the face of it.
    "Juventus Football Club can today confirm that Angelo Ogbonna has completed a permanent transfer to English Premier League side West Ham United, who will pay a fee of €11 million to be spread over the next three financial years,"
    Having Slaven Billic in place, and of course the eventual Olympic Stadium relocation, has made West Ham a much more attractive destination than it has been in the past, bringing the added advantage that European clubs are used to staging payments on an annual basis, whereas in the UK payments have to be made directly.
    The two Davids, aided by their super sub, have been quick to exploit the Euro Card, and fair play to them! -Ed
